Mega Man 9 will be a bargain at 1000 Wii Points photo

According to popular Japanese magazine Famitsu, the highly anticipated WiiWare game Mega Man 9 will cost a measly 1000 Wii Points ($10) when it releases. Considering that the game is a completely original entry in the revered series and, comparatively, new NES games used to retail for around $40, this price point seems to be more than fair.

On another interesting note, Famitsu also hints that the game may include some form of downloadable content. Whether this will involve new stages, bosses, or weapons is completely unknown at this point.

More information about the game -- including a North American release date -- should be revealed at E3 next week. Since I would have sold my first-born to download this incredible-looking retro throwback anyway, $10 seems quite the bargain! Do you agree?

That's actually pretty impressive, I was expecting more, but then I can't imagine the game was extremely taxing to make for them.

Chad, will you try to guess what bosses are gonna be in this Mega Man, and try to draw their respective stages? because that would be AMAZING =)

They could have gone up to $20 before I would have even bat an eye.

While it may be entirely original (err I guess?), it certainly isn't any sort of undertaking that would warrant a higher price in the current market. I imagine this game may have taken a team of 2 high school students a month or so to make.

Yeah, maybe back then it warranted the "high" price of forty dollars, but today that development of that kind of title wouldn't surprise me if it was indeed done by the group designated by dtomek a few comments above me.

Also, please do release this on PSN! I'm adverse to downloading Wiiware on my Wii, for some reason.

Great news all around! This game is the best fanservice I've seen in quite a long time.

10$ is indeed quite good, 10€ a bit less, but still acceptable :-)

It bums me out to hear people griping about how easy this game must be to make. Relatively speaking, sure, but comments like the "two high school students" one above make me cringe at the lack of respect for game design. Games are more than just graphics, folks. There is an art to making a good old-school NES game. Capcom made their name doing just that.

Downloadable content for a game that is basically downloadable content for the NES Megaman games. Interesting.

Aww... And I would have bought your firstborn and given you a brand new 8-bit MegaMan game. And then used it's concentrated powers of A-MAZ-ing-ness to rule the world.

But, I can't complain because, ya know. New official 8-bit MegaMan game that I would have sold my firstborn child for (granted, it would have gone for substantially less. Plus, I wasn't planning on having one anyways). That's a nice consolation prize.

Any chance that you'd be interested in a new 8-bit Final Fantasy game? I'll start learning to program now!

Am I the only one that thinks this is too high? Don't get me wrong, I'll still buy this, but considering it looks like an NES game shouldn't this be no more than 500 or 600 Wii points? I feel like they're jacking up the price on brand name despite it being Neo-retro.

I expected it to be much lower, not that it really changes much.

As I expected. Considering there's other stuff going on (allegedly: Leaderboards, a seperate playmode, and now potential for DLC) that price feels right to me.

Also, what Hoodie said.

@naia: They sell NES games for 500 Wii Points, and while this is basically an NES Mega Man game, they had to at least go through the effort to make new artwork and levels and bosses for it. For the others, they've got the code all made, they just have to slap it onto the VC. I think 1000 Wii Points is totally justifiable in that sense.
Knivy's Avatar - Comment posted on 07/09/2008 14:25

I think the price is ok, could've been at least 200-400 points more due to being "wiiware", or at most 200points less due to the premium some VC titles get.

With this price I'll definitely pick this up. And to anyone saying it should cost as much as an NES virtual console game, keep in mind those don't really involve any new work. This is an entirely new game, so you know, there are people that worked on it that need to eat.

"i'll buy it at a high price!"

but i guess i won't have to. cool!

i'd LOVE for new NES games via Wii Ware to become a trend. just think of all the 8-bit goodness that could be achieved with today's approach to game design.

To the people complaining, just because they've chosen an art style that hasn't been commercially used as a choice - and not by fonction - doesn't mean that they are being lazy about it.

Here's a comment that I've spotted about the new Prince of Persia, and its cell-shadedness. I hope you guys recognize yourselves while complaining about megaman:

"come on men. it take them 30 seconds to draw these picture. they are just too lazy to make it a perfect 3D. they too our money, and give us a cel-shaded animation. that wrong man. wrong. i just want it on 3d. they don't want to make it in 3d. so i guess metal gear solid 4 is the winner."
(sic, all of it)

@Dexter:
Actually you're wrong it was EXTREMELY TAXING for them to make this game...

See a while back all their source codes for all their games got scattered across the land into hard to reach places and Morimoto had to go around and find them, solving puzzles and shit along the way.... (didn't actually happen)
