Mega Man 9 retail packaging will be sold to the public

Mega Man 9 retail packaging will be sold to the public photo
     OMG poniez!

Remember the other day when I first saw pictures of this packaging for Mega Man 9 and I said that I was going to sit in Nick Chester's bushes and attack the UPS man? I guess I can head home now (I've been nestled under this prickly bush leeching Chester's Wi-Fi), because the Capcom Unity blog dropped a hint that some of these will actually be sold through the Capcom store ... in limited quantity.

In the original post about the packaging, a limited run off "200 or so" was mentioned, but we have no hardcore details about when they will actually go on sale or what the actual number available will be. From the comments on the article:

Folks, here's the thing. The number is so limited because they're actually making the disc case out of an ACTUAL old NES cart! There aren't really thousands of those lying around for them to gut and relabel. However, that being said, mayhaps some arrangement can come about where one can mail an old cart to CAPCOM with the payment for this fine packaging, and one can receive this glorious package back.... ?

Perhaps that's just an idea, but if it's an idea you like the sound of, go to the Capcom Unity blog and say so. I know I have tons of NES carts to spare, and it'd certainly be no heartbreak to give one up to get this in return. Make your voice heard! Otherwise, there's sure to be bloodshed over the ultra-limited number of these available, and that could get really, really ugly.

[Thanks, Adam]

A cannot believe they think there aren't TONS of old NES carts ready to be scrapped for this. I have 2 used games stores near me both filled with unsellable crap NES games. ^__^

Yeah, I know, that's not a general statement, but it's probably true that most fans who would want this easily have a few old NES carts they'd ditch for this masterpiece of awesome

Would it not be easier to simply manufacture new cases that look like NES carts?

If they could harvest one of my old NES carts for this I would so let them. Let me just kiss goodbye to my old Nintendo World Championship Gold Game Pak. It'll soon be a Megaman 9 special package!

Yessssssssssssssssssssss! Seriously though, did Nintendo through out every last NES cart mold? How hard would it be to press some new ones?

I totally called this btw, I knew they couldn't resist making money.

Okay, reading it again I noticed this:

Don't worry, we're thinking about offering a very limited quantity (200) on the Capcom Store, probably with a PSN or XBLA game voucher.

So, it's an Nintendo cart that might have a voucher for the versions of the game on the non-Nintendo systems. That's delightfully funny to me. ^_^

I can't believe I'm the first one to mention this: guys, go grab one of your NES carts, then, go grab a CD-ROM. hold one up to the other. notice anything ?

the cd-rom is slightly wider than the width of the cartridge !

I dont know if they're using mini-cds or what, but a cdrom wont fit inside an nes cart.

Reginald at 09/19/2008 13:51
edit: yeah its a mini cd. in which case we can start cranking out our own. I need to go buy 50 copies of that duckhunt/SMB cart

@ScottyG beat me to it :( except with only half of what i was gonna say

From Capcom Admin's Blog:
Unfortunately, we weren't able to put the full game on these cartridges (the licensing and legal issues were a headache and not worth the trouble), but I agree, it would've been cool. Instead, these carts contain a small CD with artwork, game information and screenshots.

So apparently none of these carts will actually include the game.

Don't get me wrong. This is freakin awesome and I'll be one of the many trying to get my hands on one of the 200. Just thought that might clear up/start some more confusion.

Whatever it would cost them to make this, I WOULD FRIGGIN' PAY IT TO GET ONE. Why do they have to be so mean. :(

Basically no chance to get one of only 200 copies, and certainly not way over here...

This makes me a really, really sad panda and Mega Man fanboy.

Petitions are useless yeah...?

I wonder if they can do something similar with SNES cartridges. There's also nothing stopping them from producing new cartridges of their own, what with the patent on the NES (and presumably all related hardware) being expired and everything...
