Amidst the slew of pathetic "casual" games and developers frightened of alienating precious "newcomers" by making videogames too challenging, Mega Man 9 producer Hironobu Takeshita is set to throw caution to the wind and produce a worthy Mega Man successor. MM9 promises to be one that will challenge old school players who miss their videogames putting up a stiff resistance.
"Mega Man 9 is very hard," stated Takeshita. "We didn't want to do Mega Man, but easy. We want players to get better, we want them to remember.
"I've always tried to challenge players and I think there are gamers who miss being challenged by games."
Great news for retro fans, whose stone-clad skin can feel nothing but the harshest of punishment. While I'm personally not a fan of "hard for the sake of hard" games, I am at least relieved to hear that some people in the industry aren't terrified of scaring off the "new" demographic and nestle themselves at the other end of the spectrum.

HUZZAH!
Also, forget challenging, I want it to be impossible like the first time I played the game.
I just beat Mega Man V for the GB, and that game had way too many dumb hard parts.

I wonder if it really is that hard though, since after some playing the old Mega Man geames weren't that hard.

I've actually seen that. I can take some disappearing blocks, but I don't want them to be everywhere. I think some are fine.. good even. Too much.. can really piss me off.
Also, I want to go on record as being against instant kill lasers a la Quick Man's stage in MM2. That is just bs.
I wondered as to why the hype was so large on this one, that I began to look around for the purpose. I asked, and I got... Kind of a response.
I took it upon myself to look up the background of mega man games since I stopped playing them and I was enjoying the story. It seemed to have developed quite a bit since I had last played it. But with the advent of this, are they looking to make a very plain mega man game once again to sell on the name alone?.. What makes it okay for Mega Man to do that and yet the same situation causes outrage when Square does it. It's all very confusing.
On a side note.. What in the flying hell is going on around here with all the Ron Workman Avatar Copies?
I'm excited for Mega Man 9 because I'm ready to go back to the purity of the original games. To be honest, I haven't enjoyed a Mega Man game since my childhood -- with the notable exception of Mega Man: Powered Up -- and I'm really excited for this title.
I know some people (Dexter) aren't big fans of the Mega Man series because they have a beef with the limitations of the character movements, etc. But, I always thought Mega Man had great level design that was simultaneously difficult and fair. Is it annoying that the Blue Bomber can't shoot diagonally? Sure, but I'm the type of guy that will tape his hands together to make driving more exciting. (Please don't try this.)
For Mega Man, story is secondary to gameplay, imo. While Battle Net and the X/Zero/ZX series infused the games with more story, Gameplay varied with hit and miss results. Some would say more miss as time went on.
I think the hype is in large because people are so often vocal about their love of Mega Man 2 and how great that a game was (arguably). The aesthetic is very intune with the older style Mega Man from NES, from graphics, to gameplay, to level of story involvement (it seems).
Mega Man, by now, is so added onto, that people were craving just plain Mega Man. Its like having a vanilla ice cream that you enjoy. But they keep adding more stuff to it as time went on. By now, with Mega Man, you have Vanilla flavored freezie pops with sprinkles and easy open tabs.
So you're telling me I can just get vanilla ice cream, no sprinkles or chocolate sauce, or vitamin-enriched sour pwoder again? awesome!
Geez, Rocky, just reading that description gets me all fired up!
For HarassmentPanda, I too had a similar situation where I haven't enjoyed a mega man title *at least in traditional gameplay* in a long time. I guess my situation differed as whenever I felt like playing one of that standard, I opted to just play one of my classic games rather than buying a newer one. So naturally as time went, so did my will to purchase any new mega man game regardless of what it was named or the genre it was placed under.
For Tubatic. I would definitely agree that story was secondary to gameplay. That was almost a constant in every genre that the series expanded over with a few exceptions. I am one of those people who would love to see the original games re-released in correctly edited fashions.. One method to keep my interest is to keep going what was great. But to do so without feeling like one is dragging it out. Having played the originals, I felt as though the next was going to basically be the same game I already owned. So over time, my will waned and swayed back and forth on the lines of caring. I think I will have to see more footage of the game in order to be excited. The graphics bother me not. But will the gameplay introduce any new elements or twists to make it familiar, yet somewhat evolved from its old standards. Or will I essentially be playing Mega Man 2 with different bosses.
Take Final Fantasy 7. I love the game. Some don't some do. But that's not the point. For me, I would consider it a sad change to re-release Final Fantasy 7 with its storyline altered to compensate for anything else. I would rather the graphics be redone. If VO work is to be added, then so they shall. But it should be a choice whether or not to have it active at all. The battle system and so forth should remain as pristine as it was in its original format unless it was horridly broken... When Final Fantasy 1 Anniversary Edition was released on the PSP, I was pleased. Some was different, but the game retained very familiar appeal. The most drastic change came with graphics, but they stuck with a finely detailed 2D style. I was pleased with the work done. Then I picked up Final Fantasy 3 for the DS and I became displeased with lackluster graphics by comparison. I felt that they took something that was great and destroyed it by attempting to make a more powered game for the DS. That entire change from 2D to 3D, done in the fashion akin to giant heads and bad poly models disappointed me and I felt saddened by this.
In a long way of saying it, that is my message *nod*
P.S. I still don't get all the Ron Workman Avatars.
This.
I think those of us that are excited about Mega Man 9 are just hoping for a "pure" Mega Man experience with fresh level design and some new boss mechanics.
As far as remakes go, they're very tricky. 2D to 3D doesn't often work well. It's hard to convert 2D sprites (which were rather beautiful in the 16-bit generation) into 3D models without losing a lot of their character. While it doesn't apply to Mega Man 9, I love to see remakes of 2D games with beautiful, higher resolution sprites. Again, Mega Man: Powered Up is the exception here -- that game managed to make 3D models with quite a bit of character to them.
You don't have the Mega Man Anniversary Collection? It's not perfect, but it's cheap and available for all 3 previous consoles. Certainly cheaper than buying each of the games separately, physical or download.
1. My PS2 likes to skip while playing it, so I have to beat up my PS2 just to get it working. This sometimes scratches my disc.. which makes it harder to read.. which leads to more skipping. I've fixed my PS2 before, but it still didn't like Mega Man. It's not scratched that badly.. my PS2 is just touchy with anthology games for some reason....
2. I also have it for Gamecube... BUT THE CONTROL SCHEME IS BACKWARDS!!! WHO OKAYED THIS!!! WHO DID IT!!! FESS UP!!!
Still, those are easy for someone as awesome as I am at MEGAMAN.
Bring the PAIN.
