Mega Man 9 coming to WiiWare, Spacecat yawns and goes back to sleep photo

Secrets are hard to keep, as our own industry insider connection Spacecat can agree, and this one has finally burst from the seams with a real announcement in Nintendo Power: Mega Man 9 will be coming to WiiWare. Even more interesting, the game looks like a retro Mega Man title. Wasn't RetroforceGO! just talking about how the series could be revived with a return to its roots?

You may have to squint to read the fine print, but the scans from the article have been posted on community member nilcam's c-blog, which you can check out here. By scrutinizing these on my monitor, I was able to tell that the title will have a more in-depth story than previous titles, and everything down to the music and sound effects is 8-bit-style. To sum up -- every retro fan in the world is going to cry crystalline tears of ecstatic joy.

Now that it's in print, details will probably begin to spill out faster than the speed of light, but until then, we have a lot to be happy about. Looks like Koji Igarashi isn't the only man in the business paying attention to the rallied cries of retro gamers. Viva La Mega Man!

I'm pretty much in the same boat as deiga and GuitarAtomik. Like sweetchuck, I also wondered if they graphics are a way to get around the file size issue.
Still, I'd like something along the lines of MegaMan Powered Up. Oh well.

I doubt that file size constraints are the cause of MM9's 8-bit look. LostWinds is proof that better than PSP graphics are achievable with WiiWare. If Capcom wnated to, I'm sure they could have adapted the Mega Man Powered Up graphics engine for MM9, but they didn't. There is just one reason for that.

I know it's hard to fathom, but for people like me, 8-bit OG Mega Man is the way to do OG Mega Man. It pleases me that Capcom and Inti-Creates must know this as well.

If there are future Mega Man games that take advantage of the power of today's new hardware available, then great. But they shouldn't "star" OG Mega Man. That sprite is like a real guy, like an actor. To gussy him up with 16-bit, 32-bit, polygon, of high res 2D graphics is like dressing him in drag. Sure he looks prettier, but he also just looks...wrong.

I just want Bubble Man's music.

Anyway, to everyone clamoring for high-res HD 2D graphics, remember that shit costs a lot more than using NES-era 8-bit graphics is a lot easier on the wallet, and you can hide it under the cover of being retro.

Games don't grow on trees people. Same reason why SF IV isn't high-res 2D.

@Jonathon

But do you feel that way about Mario? Does Super Mario World feel "wrong" because he looks better than the 8-bit version? I don't really get that logic.

I'm so divided on the 8-bit look. Half of me is like "WHOA AWESOME THATS SO COOL I CANT WAIT DO WANT" and half of me is like "Megaman 4-6 were kind of mediocre (in comparison to 2 and 3, which were just brilliant), and I don't want this to be a half-assed romhack of MM6 or something" and "What if they went all out with MM9 and tried to completely revitalize the 2d action platformer genre?!"

In the end, it's a tie. Either way, I'm buying this the second it comes out. Seriously. The exact SECOND.

One other possible good thing about this: If it's successful and fairly cheap to make.. what if they decided to keep pumping these out? What if they make new retro Mega Man games like twice a year? IMAGINE!!!!
