Every once and a while, people take a crack at Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10 by saying they look like "fan-made projects". Thing is, that's not the most effective insult. Technically speaking, Cave Story is a "fan-made project", but it's still pretty damn awesome.
So is this NES/Famicom-style recreation of Mega Man 8, which you can download (at your own risk) right here. I haven't finished it yet, but after sampling a few levels, I can say I'm enjoying it more than the game it's based on. I like the "real" Mega Man 8 too, but in many ways, it's a Mega Man game in name only. Not so with this remake. As you'd expect, it looks, plays, sounds, and feels like Mega Man 1-6, 9, and 10, which for Mega Man purists like myself, makes for a more "legit" experience.
This is actually the second time we've seen this happen; Mega Man 7 got the same treatment a few years back. I hope Capcom snatches these up and throws them on XBLA/PSN/WiiWare. The worst that could happen is that they'd make "a lot" of money, as apposed to "a hella lot" of money. That wouldn't be so bad, would it Capcom?
Also, give me Mega Man Vs Marvel Vs Capcom.

Thanks for the link!
The project is cool, but to dis on where capcom was taking the series?!?
I can't believe what I'm reading! They need to make more retro games of the 16bit era, not 8bit. 16bit was when side scrolling and sprite hit their golden age. D:
The music hasn't translated that well though. It's not awful, but it's far from great. Only tried Search Man, Clown Man, and Sword Man's stages so far. Maybe the music is better in other levels.
8 was one of the first Mega Man games that I started nonstop "speed/no hit" runs with. My favorite game in the series is actually Rockman and Forte, which feels a lot like 8. I honestly wish they used the graphical style of 8/Forte more-so than the new cell-shaded post X6 style.
@Ball
How is it the way it was meant to be? MM7 had updated graphics as well.
That doesn't take away from the fact that the game looks and controls great. It's still a hell of a lot of fun, but it's just not a real Mega Man game.
People same the same thing about the Star Wars prequels. It's the same sort off deal there.
I have to play it in compat mode with EVERYTHING enabled and it's got horrible color boxes around sprites and argh.
But it's still so fun.
They even incorporated the Jump, Jump, Slide, Slide panels!
Curse you, Windows 7...Curse you.
@ William Westfall- Out of all the games on the PS3/360/Wii, how many of them look "retro"? 5? 6?
I think you can deal with two NES-looking games coming out a year.
"noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo"
seriously D:
Is the true appeal of the Mega Man series being fuck ugly and outdated? NSMB Wii was a brilliant game that kept true to it's roots, and hopefully Sonic 4 will do the same. Why does Capcom insist that Mega Man needs to be ugly to be fun? Again, I might just be missing something here, but I really don't understand what they're doing.
If you select Tengu Man's level, keep holding down the charge button through the boss introduction until the "Ready" message appears. Instead of the PlayStation version of his theme, the Saturn version will play!
you mean its not megaman unless it looks like old crap?
honestly i enjoyed megaman 8 as it was when i was a kid, i dont see how makin it look worse could help
graphics dont make a game, sorry john but im not with you on this one
I still hate Astro Man's stage.
The bottom line is that they are cheap cashins and nintendo and capcom will milk them into the ground until we stop proving that we will buy anything.
I'm also a hippocrit as I bought mega man 9 and 10.
I know that Capcom deliberately made several games with what were "modern" graphics. I meant that the best Megaman games were 8 bit. With the bigger sprites came some slight changes to the physics. I'm not saying the 16 and 32 bit games sucked, but they do have a different feel than 1-6. I still feel most at home with all the Megaman 2 clones.
Also, I'm finding the 8 bit demake to be a bit harder than the original was. The bosses seem to move faster.
The trick is, don't get discouraged. Don't expect to beat a level as soon as you pick it. In fact, expect to see several Game Over screens before you find the right level to start on. There's some trial and error to deciding which bosses to take down first. The first level you beat will usually be the hardest, because you don't have any special weapons. But as your arsenal expands, levels get easier.
Also, don't be afraid to do a little bit of farming for E Cans. Those can make the difference between beating the level on your last life or getting Game Over.
I am not at ALL a fan of the original games art style.
It's not like there's a huge abundance of retro titles out for next gen consoles. Seems like the simple option is for you to just not buy Mega Man 9 or 10. I can't even think of any other 8 bit retro titles off the top of my head.
Honestly, I think it would be so cool (even though it will never happen and would be challenging to program some of the cool stuff in 9 & 10 for an actual NES) if Capcom made limited edition NES carts (not just the PR kit) for Mega Man 9 & Mega Man 10 that I can play in my NES. I have those on Wiiware, but I would love to have an NES cart to hold and cherish. But that's just me.
You might want to read a sentence or two of the article before you start whining about the ongoing retro gaming conspiracy that threatens to take away your precious 1080P lighting effects and digitally-recorded orchestral scores. It's a fan-made project that Capcom is not actively involved with.
PS3 and 360 gamers would probably bitch and moan about a current-gen version of Mega Man or Mega Man X, just like they did when X8 came out. There wouldn't be enough sandbox elements, quick-saves, multiplayer deathmatches, or health packs to make it par-for-the-course for today's "hardcore" gamers. I personally think that side-scrolling games (old-school Castlevanias, etc..) should stick with the DS, the Wii, and the PSP.
Are awesome updated sprites, ridiculous numbers of levels, and maintaining the old feel really so much to ask?
They're doing the right thing with bionic commando at least
