Say hello to Jaap, a 66-year-old former DJ who loves gardening, maintaining his boat, and owning fools in Battlefield. Under the name Wacko Jacko, he declares himself to be the world's oldest Battlefield player, and he takes his work very seriously.
This an excellent little video, so check it out if you haven't seen it yet. I want this man to be my friend.

Meet the rest of the team
I applaud the "Forever Young" of our parent's generation. Instead of hating video games and turning into a crusty pile of hatred, this dude is out there living in the digital age in the best possible way.
Awesome!!
(and I'm retired and I love gardening too! He's got beautiful roses and delphiniums!)
I suspect there will be more and more of us "retiree gamers" in the future. My hubby is 55 this year and will soon also be retired - and yeah, we'll be spending a lot more of our time gaming. :)
(it's cheaper than golf!)
Oh... and I have played MAG a few times with a wonderful gal by the nick "grandmakilledu" - she's 67 and a peek into my future because she is hilariously outspoken and bossy. I adore her! (she's my new hero).
@Elsa - I certainly hope so!! My children joke around that I'll still be holding a game controller in my hands when I'm on my last breath. (I just turned 45, and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon. ^^ )
But yes, it's nice to see the mature gamers being noticed. Everyone seems to go on about how the older generation only play Wii games and Farmville, but there are a LOT more hardcore, "mature" gamers out there then given credit to.
@Jaded... I checked out your blog... and there was none, just an sidebar bio. You need to blog! Do an intro blog and get to know us! It's awesome to have another "mature" gamer around here (I'm 49). As you said... not all of us older folk play Wii games or Farmville! (I've actually never played either... though everyone else keeps telling me I'm missing out, but I'm too addicted to MAG) :)
I love how in the Internet realm, 45ish is considered old! This guy seems to be considered ancient. Admittedly the only gaming I get out of my pops is some forza. Yeah I wish I could get down on some BF with my dad. Dangit anyways.
@Elsa
I intended to do an introduction blog when I first joined. Then school started up and all my free time was bit in the bum with studying. Just recently started swinging back around here to catch up on E3 news. I have some time after this holiday weekend, so I'll have to introduce myself properly. :)
The part of this video where they show the outside of his house, and all the noise coming from inside, made me laugh. I often wonder what my neighbors think when I'm gaming at midnight with the surround sound turned up high...
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
What?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

It's only a racial slur if you have one a in it.
Keep trolling failtroll.

Bravo good sir. Bravo.
Who am I trolling? Jaap's parents?
I kid, I kid. He's a cool old guy. Not like those punk kids... going around flash mobbing people.

You deserve a round of applause.
