Meet Leliana, a “deadly lass” in Dragon Age: Origins. Once a bard -- a position that doubles as an assassin or spy in the game’s fiction -- Leliana has tried to redeem her violent soul by living a peaceful life appeasing the Maker in the Chantry. Her past doesn’t stay in the past once players jump into the game. The Maker -- a wonderful chap, apparently -- tells her to take up her old profession(s) again and return to killing and decapitating dragons (or whatever bards do).

The above video tells a bit of this story and shows Leliana doing her thing -- hacking monsters, getting blood all over Chantry clothing, and having sex.

Origins is still set to release on the PC and Xbox 360 on November 3rd. The PS3 version will follow in later November.

@ Kaleidoskull, it's true I feel indignant and am BOYCOTTING Dragon Age:Origins until 2 conditions are met. 1. They triple the amount of blood (think The Shining) and 2. I get flown to Bioware to play the game (and maybe the latest builds of Old Republic, Mass Effect 2 and Jade Empire 2).

BOYCOTT BIOWARE NOW!

@ kadgi:

oddly enough, I agree. this new video player format is terrible. embed these in the actual story. I assume its some advertising banner technology.

Is this game merely a parody of itself? Why is everyone splattered with blood? Why does everything move so stiffly? Why are people excited for this? I know I have bad taste, but I didn't think someone's taste could be worse than mine.

Allow me to summarize this video for anyone unable to view it:

Leliana says: "Hey! Let's kill some jerky bad guys, then stand around in the lobby of some building, all splattered in blood, having a conversation about nothing. Then I'll fcuk one of you in a cave!"

This poorly edited/produced video has me on the fence, and my balance is faltering towards waiting until this game is in the $30 bin.

So until today I had only seen screen shots of this game, and I was absolutely SOLD that this was a 'must buy'. I sat down with my bagel, hit up Destructoid, and thought, "Oh wow! Dragon Age video! I'll just take a sneak peek to get myself in even MORE of a tizzy about this game." Now, I DO realize this is only a snippet of(from what I have heard) will be quite a lengthy RPG. So trying to say that the WHOLE game will be like this is a bit unfair. But I was totally underwhelmed by what I saw. The whole thing just seemed so stiff and unpolished. In the dialog scenes, it was like the heads of the characters were just pasted on to static rendered bodies, the combat(in motion) looked terribly "blah", and why another sex gimmick? To agree with peej above, all the blood splatter just seems so dopey and comical it totally takes away any immersion. I will still give this game a shot, I just hope I am wrong and the game ends up being far more visually appealing and chock full of substance! If not, it'll be back to more Demon's Souls.

I have to agree with Kadgi and Reginald, the new video player is annoying. Please put the videos back into the article.

Also, this game looks like it's supposed to parody the whole Classic Fantasy genre. All the people look too pretty, everything's just set to shock or annoy people (like the Manson song). I don't know. I loved Mass Effect and the ridiculously good-looking people made sense in the future, but in Fantasy it just makes it look like a really cheap Fantasy movie. No character at all.

Just meh. Even though the people in Oblivion were incredibly ugly, they had character and fit into the world.

This I'd the first time I have ever seen such resentment for this game (I can't see the video because I'm on the iPhone; seriously guys if you really are making an iPhone app please have one where we can watch the god damn videos since you refuse to use YouTube) and I really have to wonder is the video just really bad or does the entire game look really bad? I'll admit I have never seen a single video but I thought, ya know, it's Bioware.

The sex I could care less about IF it were like an optional thing althrough dialog or whatever but you guys are bashing it pretty hard. What the hell is going on with this video?

I really wish they would stop trying to sell this game off a gimmick. BIOWARE you make good games no need to turn yourself into the National Lampoon's Franchise!!! This is just getting embarrassing. So your sex scene in ME caused a bunch of pub' stop trying to force that with DAO it looks tacky.

What a crappy trailer. The characters looked a bit rubbish and very stiff, and the voice acting didn't come off as too great either.

Hopefully this isn't representative of how the game will look and sound.

You know, I am a huge Bioware fan, and I am really excited about Dragon Age but I have to agree with you all above, the trailer was awful. I've spent a little time defending their marketing angle on this game for a bit now but they've completely lost me. I have no doubt that this is going to be a very compelling game, but they are not showing me WHY it would be compelling (at least not in their trailers). It's all blood and sex. I don't object to that being in the game but surely there is more to Dragon Age than blood and sex. If the game is edgy fine, but what I really care about is if it is fun and entertaining. I know it's there, how about they show us that instead?

I am getting less and less excited about this game. A couple months ago I probably would have bought it first day. The more they release about it the worse it looks. Very disappointed. I will now wait for at least several very positive reviews before buying it.

Graphics look only OK. The whole thing is looking cliché in a bad way. The voices sound terrible too, IMO. So sick of fake sounding British accents.

I'd really appreciate a more "explore and let stories unfold - small and large." This is smelling like yet another "stop the Armageddon from Hell from destroying the world"

Bah.

I'm with Pranky and zombielifecoach,

I was interested in this - even after the very first trailer but they're not showing any signs of improvement. The animation is awful, the voice acting is just as bad and in contradiction to their claims that sex should only be used to further the story you seem to be able to screw every bloody woman in the game. Now don't get me wrong these things are to a degree forgiveable (I enjoyed 'The Witcher' despite similar faults for example) but for a game that claims to be original and compelling it just appears to be cliché after cliché.

I can only hope that this is just stupendously bad marketing and that I'm proven wrong at release.

Slowly losing interest sadly. The longer wait has definitely spoiled the WANT factor in this. Had they released it for PC when it was ready instead of holding it up for the damn console release I would have been excited to purchase. I do understand to a degree that they need to hold off because in case it turns out to be a not so great game, they will have already made the sales for console and PC instead of console owners being warned before hand not to buy.

I don't really think the "wooden" look of the characters will matter for 49/50th's of the game, because you'll have an isometric view (like Baldur's Gate). This video didn't really show what it'll be like at all to actually PLAY this game.

I dunno. I'm still buying it.

Personally I think the over the top blood splattering is ridiculous. Watching them all stand around looking like wooden mannequins with blood all over them just ruins it completel Im thinking only 12 year olds are going to be crazy about this.

runtheplacered: The gameplay has you kind of behind the character and you can rotate the camera around. It's like an RPG. You run around and wreck dudes with swords and magic and stuff, then their blood splatters all over you. It's fun.

I was mildly disappointed when the lead programmer told me there were no mid-game sex changes, but other than that it's really cool.

Is this game like Mass Effect, gameplay-wise? Honest question. If it's basically just Lord of the Rings-meets-Mass Effect, then I want it.

@hpv: runtheplacered is right. On the PC version (although not the console versions) you will be able to zoom the camera up and out so you can play it in an isomeric view just like Baldur's Gate. If you look up some of the earlier walkthrough videos for the PC they show how you can zoom the camera out like this. The more recent videos all have the 3rd person view but the isometric is still there in the PC version.

@Sharpless: This game will not play like Mass Effect. Mass Effect was effectively an action RPG where you clicked the mouse and you would shoot with some special abilities thrown in. This will play much more like Bioware's other game. It may look like fluid action but what is probably going on is the game is progressing in rounds. Each round all the characters execute an action that you or the AI has queued up, in the absence of a queued action they'll just do a basic attack or stand there looking dumb. So this game will be less clicking on the screen more clicking on the UI.
