MediaWise's top ten 'games to avoid' for children and teens photo

The National Institute on Media and the Family has just released the 2007 Video Game Report Card (pdf file), which rates the games industry on everything they're not going to listen to. It covers everything from how parents don't understand ESRB ratings to how kids are successfully purchasing M-rated games 50 percent of the time, but we were more interested in their lists of "games to avoid for your children and teens," as well as their recommended ones.

MediaWise 2007 list of games to avoid for children:

  • Assassin’s Creed
  • Call to Duty 4
  • Conan
  • The Darkness
  • Jericho
  • Kane & Lynch: Dead Men
  • Manhunt 2
  • Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles
  • Stranglehold
  • Time Shift

It's hard to argue with this list if your opposed to putting violent games in children's hands. They're all M-rated, and all involve killing. Titles like Manhunt 2 and The Darkness are shoe-ins for this type of list, but the Wii title Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles is a bit of a surprise. I know of some that would say that Kane & Lynch: Dead Men is appropriate for an "avoid" list for other reasons.

Hit the jump for more, including the MediaWise 2007 "recommended" list.

MediaWise 2007 list of recommended games for children:
  • FIFA Soccer 08
  • Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
  • Hannah Montana: Spotlight World Tour
  • Madden NFL 08
  • Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games
  • Need for Speed Pro Street
  • The Sims 2: Castaway
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Super Mario Galaxy
  • Viva Pinta (the NIMH fudged the name)

I'm sure that all of these titles are "safe," but I can't recommend Hannah Montana: Spotlight World Tour to anyone, child or not. Titles like Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario Galaxy, and Viva Piñata are solid choices for anyone, child or not.

We give the National Institute on Media and the Family's 2007 Video Game Report Card a "B-." Of course, they'd give Destructoid an "F."

What about Gears of War, that game is terrible for kids. Or is it too late for it to be on the list? Yeah Gears is too old.

EL OH EL

Meh, I guess its a good thing in a way. It helps parents understand that there are some games that they shouldnt buy for their kids, which is important.

I wouldn't recommend letting your kids play Need for Speed. I am certain it can encourage unsafe driving but, besides that, it might led kids to like tuned cars with flaming stickers all over them and neon lights on their chassis. If only, this is bound to generate a huge stream of bad taste.

OR, just look at the ESRB rating on the box. Props to them for recommending Mario 3 though, younger gamers need to learn their history.

and SMB3? Are we trying to gear kids towards a rare hunt game or Emulation? because out of randomness, i'm sure a kid who's reading that has a Wii to download from the VC.

Any list that recommends Hannah Montana is worthless. Also, as I child, I am certified to say I have been scarred for life by Call of Duty 4. If I'm lucky, I'll grow up to be a demented hobo.

Not a bad list. It covers 10 of the major M-rated games this holiday season. The "recommended" list is trash, but it can't be helped, as it only mentions the safest of the safe games.

I actually was flipping channels last night and caught the tail end of this "Report Card" conference on C-Span (on rerun @ 2AM). After watching the year end summary video, which concluded with a clip showing the shoulder creature (don't know the name) from The Darkness eating a man's heart from his chest.

After bracing myself for a warcry and ye olde pitchforks from politicians and soccer-moms in the crowd, I opened my eyes again to see the gentleman taking reasonable questions from reasonable press. Whodathunkit?

The questions I heard were "What would you recommend to a parent who does not have experience with video games?" and "How does the current ratings system work?" The man fielding these questions responded NOT by attacking the gaming industry, but by stressing EDUCATION OF PARENTS IN PURCHASING TITLES!!!!

Bravo.

I like how they misspelled piñata with pinta. Because pinta is a skin disease which, according to wiki, "is caused by infection with a spirochete, Treponema carateum, which is morphologically and serologically indistinguishable from the organism that causes syphilis."

So, I'm going to step out of the box a bit and say something that will probably go against everyone else here. If the ESRB had made a ratings system more like the motion picture system or that had the age clearly displayed in big numbers like in Europe, there might be less controversy. But instead, the ESRB decided to use a brand new design that actually requires parents to read a descriptor rather than just glance at the box and see a big fat 18.

Wow - Hannah Montana is recommended? You can't play a lot of those nasty violent video games once you're dead from a suck overdose, I suppose.

And hardly any of the ones they discouraged have anything gratuitous! In fact, COD4 contains one of the most vivid testimonies against violence available today. Not to mention, these are probably the same parents that endorse the people perpetrating violence overseas.

MediaWise 2007 list of games to avoid for children:

*snip list*

All of these games are M-rated, no? So, it stands to reason that based upon that, yeah they're not meant for children. Obviously. Well, I'm not sure about "Call to Duty 4" since that's not a real game, but "Call of Duty 4" for the DS is rated T. The rest (including the real versions of Call of Duty 4) are all M-rated, though, so yeah.

So... why was this list necessary? Are parents really that stupid that they can't just look at a letter on the cover of a game (not to mention the content descriptors that usually accompany that letter) to see whether a game is appropriate for their kids or not?

(Yeah, I am aware that the answer to that question is a resounding yes for a lot of parents, unfortunately. ¬_¬)

What they need to do, instead of listing a bunch of titles like this, is to simply point parents to this. If parents still don't get it after that point, there's little hope for them anyway.

@Holyetheline

What about Gears of War, that game is terrible for kids. Or is it too late for it to be on the list? Yeah Gears is too old.

Well, they do have Super Mario Bros. 3 on the list, so it's not like they care how up-to-date their lists are, apparently. Unless they somehow think the VC release of SMB3 is a new game or something. Wouldn't surprise me if that's the case.

@DrNutt

The ESRB can't use the MPAA rating system, because those are trademarks of the MPAA.

Regardless of that, I guess the ESRB could have made their ratings system easier to understand. Maybe. Somehow. But then I guess they didn't expect parents to be so completely retarded that they can't understand simple things like M = MATURE or E = EVERYONE or AO = ADULTS ONLY and so on. I mean, how and why is that any harder to understand than PG = PARENTAL GUIDANCE or R = RESTRICTED or whatever the MPAA uses? If anything, I'd say that the MPAA system is less intuitive. The only advantage that the MPAA system has is that it has been around for almost forty years and parents are just used to it by now. And if you look at its history, they've changed it (and are still changing it to this day, if that "Hard R" thing is to be believed) so many times that it's a wonder anyone knows what the heck it means.

As for the ESRB descriptors, more information is better than less information, at least to a point, and I don't think the ESRB comes anywhere near that point.
Im OK's Avatar - Comment posted on 12/05/2007 18:33

Also, if you look at the history of the MPAA ratings, parents were apparently just as retarded about it when it first came out as they are regarding the ESRB ratings now.
