Media Molecule working on 'groundbreaking' new PS3 game photo

Media Molecule has made its name with the critically acclaimed platformer LittleBigPlanet, but if a new job listing is anything to go by, the studio is not content to merely sit on its laurels, with a new console title currently in the works.

The job listing asks for someone with "experience writing and maintaining physics code," who has, "shipped a console game with an online component." Both these elements hint that LittleBigPlanet 2 is in the works, which should have been a given anyway, considering how hard Sony has been pushing that prospective franchise.

Until then, all we know is that the title is due to be a "Ground-breaking, AAA, PS3 title for Sony Computer Entertainment. At the time of writing, it was only confirmed that Media Molecule was working on LBP for the PSP, and since MM is only a small studio, it was believed that there wouldn't be enough hands for a whole new PS3 title. Apparently this is not the case.

Are you ready for even more LittleBigPlanet, or do you hope Media Molecule has something entirely different up its sleeve?

I really don't know what more they could do with LBP given the user-created content aspect of the game... so yeah, I'm hoping for something entirely new and different!

Unless LittleBigPlanet 2, at a minimum, triples the world creation limit, and adds a ton of new author tools, I don't see why a sequel is ever needed for that game: it's built to supply infinite replay value. I suppose I can come up with a host of new features (improved graphics, ability to easily create simple 2 dimensional worlds similar to Mario, add custom soundtracks to level creation somehow), but they're not groundbreaking.

Add more physics. So many physics. And more character customables.

Oh, and a boomer with a thong.

LittleBigPlanet didn't keep me playing as long as I would have liked it to, so a fresh idea is certainly favourable for me. Hopefully more groundbreaking than their last groundbreaking title too!

I want something with more lasting appeal for me than I thought LBP would have. LBP had seemingly infinite things to do, but for some reason, I just lost interest quite quickly.

I would simply be happy with some MM-created DLC Level packs (like the Metal Gear or Monster packs, only more levels per pack and maybe minus crossover franchising). The user generated levels are great, but they often miss something that MM managed to include.

Although I do have to admit, playing a user-gen Ico tribute in my Colossus costumes was meta-epic. :-)

A sequel can never be truly groundbreaking, can it?

I'm hoping it's something entirely new. And if it's any good, I'll have TWO games for my PS3! Woah!

Agreed. LBP sounded so great on paper, but it wasn't that great in execution IMO. Don't get me wrong.. it was good.. but it jsut wasn't as addictive as I has hoping.

I'm hoping for a new IP. I don't really feel that they could expand all that greatly on LPB as it stands now that couldn't be done with DLC. I still go back to LBP every now and then to see what users have come up with, and there are some truly great levels out there. However, I'd love to see more levels released by MM.

I love MM's incredibly British approach to everything, so I'd like to see a new IP from them

They should allow the player to fine tune character movement/jumping if this is for LBP 2. The floaty and inaccurate jumps weren't really doing it for me.

I think it's just Modnation racers that they announced during E3: http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/989/989549p1.html

correction* Modnation racers was announced by United Front Games not Media Molecule. Sorry about that. My bad :P

i also hope it's a fresh IP...i'd rather pay $10 many times over for new level packs than pay $60 for a sequel that is essentially just more levels

@CrudeDarkness: Modnation Racers is from a totally different developer.

Hopefully something new LBP was ok but NOT worth the $60 I sunk in.

yeh..i sold my copy of LBP already. it was certainly technically impressive, but at the end of the day, kinda pointless and the controls sucked.

I just hope they don't saturate the LBP franchise.

I love the MM levels for lbp, but I haven't played created content that comes anywhere close to MM. (save for 1 or 2) So yeah, I don't play much; I would like to hunt some doodads, but the online coop doesn't match so well for me.

"Ground-breaking" for me implies that they are doing something new and different, or breaking new ground so to speak (duh!)

I wouldn't mind either. LBP2, or something else entirely.

@stevesan: So, there are videogames that have points? 'At the end of the day' all gaming is pointless. The idea is to have fun; LBP has it in spades.

They need to add the option to change character physics in LBP's level creation.

What strikes me in these comments is that a lot of people say LittleBigPlanet wasn't all that. All I can say is that the only boundary in the game is your own imagination. Granted you gotta have some patience but it's all worth it in the end. For me LittleBigPlanet is the best game of the century. I can't wait to see what other game they're gonna come up with. If I can recreate Destructoid.com in a game and play it as a level again I'm all ears. I think Media Molecule is one of the most creative studio's around. So it'll be a cool game.
