Media Molecule: We'd never want to do LittleBigPlanet 2 photo

Well, this isn't something you read every day. A PS3 exclusive that has been promoted heavily by Sony apparently isn't in line for a sequel, with Media Molecule adamant that no plans are in place for a LittleBigPlanet 2.

"We’d never want to do that," level designer Danny Leaver tells Critical Gamer. "That’d be the most counterproductive thing you could do, I think."

Producer Martin Lynagh adds that "what you've seen so far of LittleBigPlanet, that's the way it's going to continue," referencing the DLC packs and regular weekly updates.

I can certainly see where they're coming from, and admire the studio's commitment to not breaking apart the LittleBigPlanet community. Even so, it seems so weird to think that LittleBigPlanet 2 would "never" come out. I can't say I actually believe it, and instead I wholly expect to see a followup game come eventually. It'll be intereating to see how long MM holds out, though.

What are they gonna do five years from now when nobody's playing the PS3 anymore? No sequel this generation, I could understand and actually even support. But no sequel ever seems silly. I can't imagine they wouldn't do another one for Sony's next console.

I doubt there will be a second game for the PS3, but once the next system is out we'll more than likely see an updated version of the game.

the game is a almost a turnkey operation. it almost runs itself for christ sake. just keep giving users more tools, bits and bobs, and it will continue to flourish.

Sorry! I bumped add comment early on my phone! I would expect that MM wants to ride the DLC train for LittleBigPlanet on PS3. A sequel on the next generation system would make sense. The line about not fracturing the community seems to hold out to that point with me. Hopefully, Sony doesn't push 'em.

It's always nice to hear that some developers don't make games with the sole intention of making a sequel.

good for them, most sequals are useless... just look at this gen, full of nothing but sequals that really don't do much more but base the game around gameplay already esablished without adding much else

there are exceptions of course, a la half-life 2, RE4, GTA3 but for the most part 95%+ of sequals are unneeded and useless in terms of actually changing/shaping gaming at all.

Do games like this or Rock Band 2 really need sequels? They're just meant to be expanded, really, so a sequel doesn't really serve a purpose. Make one for PS2, one for PSP and just expand them after that.

I could understand sequels when some kind of story is at play, but LBP and RB2 don't really have those.

Sports titles could actually learn from this, like that will happen, though. I think its silly people keep forking over $50-$60 a year for a roster update and some tweaks.

Banjo Threeie. Just sayin'.

On a more serious note, I REALLY like the idea of keeping it at one title (with great community support), but consistently adding more content to the retail blu-ray disks in stores for people without internet and to encourage new adopters. Fill that effer up with the best of the best. Confusing? Yes. Awesome? Arguable.

make a different one?!

I think its a good idea to leave it. Keep LBP active and supported, then move on and make another IP. They are obviously a very talented and creative team. Time to flex those creative muscles again :D

Guess they forgot about that PSP game they're releasing (port or not, it's very existence is still contradicting the developer's oh-so-precious auteur mentality). Drop the pretentiousness already and make a franchise if it sells. Not that I care; LBP was an unmitigated disaster as a platform game regardless of its undeniable charm and fantastic modding support.

Intereating points all around.

Also, I would say that they're already sort of milking LBP sort of hard. Or maybe I'm the only person who finds most-to-all costumes too expensive?

They've said that the engine is so flexible that they could make it into a FPS, so I think if they'll just update the game with more than costumes, we'll be ok.

They'll probably do something with full 3D movement and maybe backwards compatibility with the sidescrolling stuff. Make that shit downloadable on PSN and they'd be all set since they'd never have to worry about the disc becoming too out-of-date for new users and PS4 will assuredly be Cell-based and 100% backwards compatible with the PS3.

Like other people have said, games like this really don't need sequels. They need expansions. In LBP's case they really need to recruit the top community creators to make some levels like they did for the GOTY edition, but give them some trophies and costumes to throw at players to give the expansions some more bite.

I would like to see a sequel for this eventually . Why I agree the community keeps it alive and vibrant it would be nice to see one with an easier creator tools so everyone didn't make rollercoaster levels. That said I am glad they are standing behind the original concept it would be nice to see some devs actually follow this model. Madden for example has gotten to the point that they should not make new games they should just update rosters

It's cool that they say that, but how much power do they really have over something like that? In before Sony forces LBP2.

I don't think Sony has ever forced anyone to make a game they didn't want to make. What would be the point? It would show through like glass. Sony games are great because the passion of the people that make them. Sony caters to that by being hands off. All their own studios have said this over and over again. Media Molecule, while set up by Sony, is not OWNED by Sony and can't be forced to do anything other than create 3 games under contract. If they don't want to do LBP2, LBP2 ain't happening.

Get a new TV. 1080i doesn't qualify as HD. It's just 540p (otherwise known as DVD quality) doubled up at high frequency.

Why would they? The graphics are great, and there are only about a million different levels to play out there, plus all the costumes... If you want a new version of LBP, you just make it yourself. I also agree that you will probably see a sequel or a game with a very similar concept on PS4.

This is actually pretty brilliant and I am glad a developer is taking a stance like that. Even if it's a game that I'll never play on a platform I will never own. But think about it. They release a game that is pretty much exactly what they were aiming for in terms of functionality. What's the point of releasing a sequel? Just to add new content? There's DLC for that. Just to add features? Why not patch the original game instead? The revenue from DLC will fund the patches to keep the game updated and improving. It all makes sense to me. What doesn't make sense is that people expect iterative sequels that honestly hold less improvement than a typical free PC game patch had 5 years ago. It's like if instead of releasing The Witcher Enhanced Edition Director's Cut (free to patch to this state from original game) the developers released The Witcher 2, which was just the old game with the patch. This is how most developers/publishers treat us today, and I think that's total bullshit.

I salute you Media Molecule. Continue "updating" your already good and complete game, and continue releasing DLC to spice things up and fund your efforts. And instead of thinking of a sequel work on a NEW, DIFFERENT, and hopefully just as interesting, game IP.

wow… a studio actually using a platform game AS a platform instead of releasing yearly iterations as full-priced "sequels". Guitar Hero, Rock Band and Left4Dead (among others) need to take some notes.

well played, MM!

I agree with silvain, GIVE US MORE LEVEL PACKS!!

If we can't have a sequel, we AT LEAST need some new professional level packs.

I mean, the MGS one even added new functionality with the Painterator AND it was totally awesome.

Make a few Final Fantasy levels (to go with those old teaser sack-boy costumes from forever ago) and some Ratchet and Clank ones and you'll make an easy mint.

Very noble, Sackboy, but I'd be incredibly surprised if this is all we'll ever see of you. PS4, I'm thinking.
