Medal of Honor: Airborne screens; yup, ze Germans still lose photo

If the number of Dubyoo-Dubyoo-Eye-Eye-centric video games are any indication, America has a strong thirst for simulated jerry killin'. Between the History Channel's twenty-four hour a day coverage of a war that ended more than sixty years back and the innumerable games placing you squarely in the shoes of Corporal Joe Sixpack or Praporshchik Ivan Vodkashot, we've learned more about the War from electronic entertainment than we did in the combined seven years of college attended by all the editors of Destructoid.

EA, never one to buck a trend until its metaphorical teat is spraying a fine mist of calcium-enriched blood, sent along some new screens for the upcoming Medal of Honor: Airborne. The title, while sporting all kinds of graphical effects that make the PR wonks wet themselves, looks a lot like every other WWII game I've ever played. I've stormed the beaches of France, I've fought through English hedgerows, and I've destroyed enough Tiger tanks to get a handjob from George Patton himself, so what else is there to show us?

Then again, maybe I'm just jaded. Are you guys still excited to be cappin' the Deutsch?

Call of Duty 1 is pretty much where I ended my WWII gaming. Believe it or not, after a while killing Nazis has gotten old.

"after a while killing Nazis has gotten old"

It`s the Wehrmacht you`re shooting at in nearly all of the WW II shooters, not the Nazis.

That's awfully pedantic, no?

Each Wehrmach soldier may not have held Nazi beliefs, but they did swear a loyalty oath to der Furhrer. Yes, you're shooting at Wehrmacht, but as they represent the military arm of the Nazi part, you are, by extension, fighting Nazism.

medal of honor is to FPS games as FIFA is to soccer. Slight updated every year and they think you should shell out full price each time. It's a shit series.

@double2 - easiest way to fix that is to quit buying them. I'm perfectly happy with my FIFA from a couple years ago.

oh don;t worry, I don't buy them anyway! Haven't bought a fifa game since France 98!

Ewwww, that Patton's handjob stroke me with way too many mental images.

When will a WWII allow the player to play as a German? I really don't understand why it is considered such a taboo.

how many more ww2 games do we have to get before we get the one where you have nukes and take a trip to japan and put an end to the war and the genre? or will we then get games where you play someone playing a ww2 game?

I wish we could get past the whole WWII shooter thing. I'm honestly tired of it. The last one I played was Battlefield 1942

I'm glad Call of Duty has decided to update the series and get with the times. I think it'd be okay to jump around between wars honestly. If they did that, between each game, we might not be as burnt out on WWII games as we are now.

We've only seen a small hill of Pacific theater games, 2-3 Vietnam games, 0 Korean war games (what happened there?)
Absolutely zero games on the Panama Invasion. No "REAL" games on our current war(s) outside of Full Spectrum Warrior.

I'm surprised that no one has successfully put together a game where ALL you do is infiltrate and disarm and disorganize a terrorist cell. That might be some compelling stuff, provided they take Sam Fisher out of the game design...

Call me pedantic if you like but the Wehrmacht didn`t consist out of die hard believers in the Führer. Later on people got drafted no matter if they wanted to or not, many didn`t swear loyality voluntarily. I`m not trying to make the Wehrmacht look like a "good thing" or anything, hell no, but calling the average 15 year old soldier who was thrown into enemy frontlines in Russia a Nazi just doesn`t do it. Maybe it`s because I`m a German and my grandfather was one of them fellas who was brought to Russia in the winter. And the military arm of the Nazis was the SS, but that`s going too far now.

What I was trying to say:

Wehrmacht = still bad, but not Nazis
Nazis = even worse

Don't you think bashing WWII shooters at every living breathing moment, is getting...ahh...I don't know...cliche?

Wow, OK, another WWII game. The last good WWII game I played was 3 years ago. There are really only two great franchises. Infinty Ward FUBARED Call of Duty with COD2. So the only one left standing is MOH. The last good MOH game came out was in 2002. For those that can not count, that's five years - half a decade. WWII games are a genre unto itself, and there are plenty of WWII freaks (like me) out there that will be glad to buy it and play it as long as the developers don't gay it up (which AB might be since it's heading to consoles), and give a solid multiplayer. Don't bash the game 'til you've played it. EA knows WWII has been done before and they are trying to do something different that hopefully all games can enjoy.

*(Of course I do not count, console shooters, because WTF would anyone play a game meant for PC, anyway - watered down, and with an inferior control method? [Apparently a lot of people, thanks IWN.] MOHPA sucked and I don't count that either.)

@Nex

I'm going to buck the trend of sex-starved nerd gamers who post fawning posts to Leigh and the other members of Destructoid with boobs (bewbs?) to let you know that you, sir, are possibly the finest writer on this site. Your articles = awesome.

That being said, I'm right up there with the guy who wants to know where the Korean War games are. With all this talk of endings on Dtoid, I can't think of a better war than one in which you are forced to retreat and enter in an uneasy truce which never achieves an acceptable resolution, as of 2007.

I think there should be a Fake Game Friday where the game's main character is a politician and he goes to other countries and talks with people about international issues, but if you say the wrong thing you suddenly switch into warrior mode and the navy seals drop some ammo for you while you go underground and start killing everything in sight re-con style. hehe yeah

How about a realistic(I mean like Tom Clancy type realism) WWII shooter, where you play for that perfect shot and it's not run and gun rambo style mowing down krauts. I might dig that.

That begs the question, where's the M*A*S*H* game? I want to flirt with nurses, drink martinis, and reflect on the senselessness of war.
