As long as the game isn't banned from being played on base, I don't have a problem with this. Not that I'm military or anything, I'd just hate to think that the hard working men and women in our armed forces couldn't enjoy their free time however they see fit.

I agree completely. I personally wasn't that affected by the level, but it can't be better than playing as the Taliban. It's not like there's a level designed around being the Taliban and killing US Soldiers or anything.

If that's not a leap in logic, I don't know what is. Especially considering no one would even know you're playing as a Tailban labeled character unless you tell them. Apparently it's the name that is offending people, if we changed it to Talibuni, no one would care anymore.

Much like the discussion of violent and questionable content when it comes to children, when deciding to purchase a game requires an adult decision. Adults should be able to decide whether they want or don't want a game. As was pointed out, it's not like they can't just get it if they really want it.
Perhaps I'm thinking too far into it and should just agree with Spectreman. The more press they get, the more people want to buy it. I mean, how many more copies do you think were sold with the airport campaign that buzzed across the land?

It's not the first time I've heard of something ridiculous being done in the Military, especially in the Army. Granted, the experience in the service varies since there are tons of factors from duty station to soldiers you serve with but in my experience this isn't selling them short. It's kinda like how when someone gets pulled over for drunk driving and the whole battalion needs a mandatory refresher on alcohol abuse/safe driving. ~_~
hmmmm, I work for the federal govt. on a navy base as a civilian (army vet).......I go to the NEX once in a while and always see alot of sailors buying games there (seems like they'll buy anything too, alot of bad games, I had to talk a kid outta buying Iron Man 2 when I was in there not long ago)....but, if they can't get it on base, theyre definitely going to just stroll off base and get it......this is dumb....the NEX is going to lose alot of sales for something these kids are going to buy anyways.....

It's two different things if a retailer decides against carrying it and if the government tells them they CAN'T carry it.
The government isn't telling Gamestop they can't carry the game at all, amtalx. I should know, I've preordered it at that very establishment. They're simply telling them that they can't sell it on base. Which, assuming Gamestop wants to maintain its contract with the federal government allowing it to stock and sell games on base, is perfectly reasonable.

After demoing the multiplayer he Twittered that the game had affected him and he wasn't going to buy it. We all prompted him, not out of spite or itlrritation but friendly curiousity, to state what he felt on Dtoid. Then we he did he got a ton of flack.

Well, soldiers can still order the games online, or go into town to purchase them. But I think this is mostly an overreaction. The game, as far as I know, doesn't glamorize the Taliban, nor does it pull a James Cameron and portray them as being a bunch of fun, happy guys who are being picked on for no reason (they're not, by the way, they're jerks and they brought the war on themselves).
I guess I kind of get it.

This is really pointless when you consider that part of military training often involves some of our soldiers actually dressing up and pretending to be terrorists anyway. Then there is the fact that al-Quaeda has been conflated with the Taliban to make the Taliban seem more evil. There would be no Taliban killing U.S. soldiers if we were not in the Middle East over false accusations.
And then, of course, there is the fact that we created/funded the Taliban so they are us and we are them to begin with.

This was in no way done to protect soldiers. It was done to make a statement against a game that includes some very controversial content. The military definitely has the right to do so.
