MDK2 ready for WiiWare on May 9 photo

Here's something you might have totally forgotten. Last year, we mentioned that BioWare-developed cult classic MDK2 was receiving a WiiWare port. It was admittedly a strange announcement; as with most outlandish WiiWare news, I expected this title to disperse into the vapor.

Well, the game is ready, and according to its WiiWare page, it's set to come out on May 9 for 1000 Nintendo bucks. From the trailer and screens available, it doesn't look like MDK2 has received much in the way of visual upgrades, but that's to be expected given that this is friggin' WiiWare we're talking about.

I personally haven't played either MDK, but I've heard great things about the series. There's a six-legged dog with a gun and a dude wearing a massive penis helmet. That's gotta be worth consideration, right?

[Thanks for the heads up, Anthony!]

I played that one on PC and Dreamcast, it's a great game, here's hoping they port it at some point to the 3DS or NGP, that game was a ton of fun and I'd pay for it again.

OH SHIT! I've been wondering for YEARS what the name of this game was. I remember it clearly. It was sooooo fun. Especially with the old man that can combine anything to make inventions. Wow, i finally found it.

ahh yiii

My cousins have been harping on about on how this game is all kinds of awesome, so a Wiiware release is welcome in my book, I'll be sure to check it out.

I'm confused now, then can fit a Dreamcast game on Wiiware, but they couldn't with Meat boy

Wha? Random. Isn't this game kinda big for Wiiware?

I always keep thinking that the acronym is somehow related to Mortal Kombat.

Both titles can all ready be had over on GOG for a measly $5.99USD.

@Wedge

That's what I was thinking. Limit for Wiiware games is something like 50mbs or something. MDK2 is much bigger than that.

What I remember of MDK, and I can't remember if it was MDK1 or MDK2, was that the console version kicked you in the teeth with its difficulty, while people complained the PC version was too easy. Not because the PC version was actually any easier, but because PC gamers abused the heck out of quick saving while the console players had to learn how to survive due to a checkpoint system.

I had this on the dreamcast. The 2nd one. It was very much an enjoyable hidden gem, that I am glad is getting some recognition with the virtual consoles. Knights of the Old republic was an amazing game but Bioware deserves some praise for their other games as well.

It can fit due to the magical process of compression. That and even tho the dreamcast discs can hold 1GB of data, not many games got close to that. Jett rocket is another example of squeezing everything out of wiiware's limits. It looks better than many retail games and everything is nice and shiny with bump mapping too :D

I played the shit out of the pc demo but was too poor/cheap to buy it. I'll pick it up now because I always wanted to play more and also because I've got 1,000 Wii points just languishing there.

MDK2 is seriously challenging on consoles. No quicksaves means frequents deaths and fuckin back tracking like a bitch. It's still a fun game and worth your time, just don't expect an easy trip.

I have the PC version, so it really wasn't difficult.

MDK2 is an excellent game. I already own it on Dreamcast, but I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to play a tough, funny action game.

Dear Interplay: Please get together with BioWare and make another MDK game. The world definitely needs more MDK games.

Seriously, if your penis looks like that helmet, see a doctor.

Also - I'd keep that to myself from now on.

Ahhh yes, shiny did do the first for pc (neversoft for psx port), with bioware taking over on the second. I miss shiny, they did cool stuff here and there.

Oh yeah and no disrespect to bioware, but I always felt the first was better.

One of the funniest games ever. Damn near pissed myself laughing. What was the dog's name? Ralph? Easily some of the greatest over-the-top violent scenes ever.

I loved this game as kid, not so sure how much I'll like it now though.

Also, because of Wiiware limit I'll wait for reviews first. I don't want a repeat of what happened to Tales of Monkey Island.

The Dog's name was Max. He had four arms and could have hold a gun in each. It was fawkin kewl! I have fond memories of both games, MDK and MDK 2. Neither of them was easy.

Interplay who released MDK 2 and was growing out of Shiny, was teasing a sequel, I guess it will depend on the succes of this port, so go get it even if you don't know a thing about it or hate. :)

We made it fit into the size limits for Wiiware. The process was not pretty, but the results are very good. We also added a PC-style quicksave anywhere, so the game is less impossible than it used to be. As well, the Wiimote really shines for the shooting aspects of the game. Overall all the fellows over at Beamdog are pretty happy about the quality we were able to deliver in the small space allowed WiiWare titles. (Doesn't hurt that the Bioware lead programmer from MDK2 was the lead on the Wiiware and HD versions as well)

Best,
-Trent
