Mayor of Rome wants Rule of Rose banned photo

Ay vey! Just when you thought you'd heard the last of the Rule of Rose controversy, a new politician crying wolf for the wholesome protection of our children against video games. Walter Veltroni, the Mayor of Rome, is attempting to block the sale of the sadistic child-themed psychological thriller on the PS2. (Hit Destructoid's archives for in-game footage )

"There is no way that a violent video game should be sold and distributed in our country ... this game must not enter Italian homes ... there is no need for massive doses of horror to entertain our children. Our youngsters are living through difficult times, with violence present on a daily basis in all the media ... Small
children have the right to be shielded from violence."

Maybe his heart is in the right place, but the greater issue is that government is attempting to play a heavy hand on what games make it to the shelves instead of strengtheing the rating system. Like the film industry, it should the the parent that makes an informed decision what game is and isn't right for the kids, not some old guy acting on notes from his advistors.  Why single out Rule of Rose in particular? There are far more enteraining and violent games avaialble in Italy to choose from -- what a waste of political stunt! He also gave a little something for the Japanese developers:

"I think those who create and make such games must have perverse minds."

Obviously, Signor Wholesome has also yet to watch a Fellini movie.

Too bad the game was awful. The atmosphere was great but the "combat" system was broken beyond repair.

It always comes down to the same thing: old people still think games are for kids...

And to think, I was actually going to pass this one up until I read Veltroni's glowing review!
