The May NPD numbers are in, and Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption is the clear winner of the month. The game sold a total of about 1.5 million units on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. As for the other games in the top five, Super Mario Galaxy 2 took third place and THQ's UFC Undisputed 2010 brought up both fourth and fifth place.
Hardware-wise, the Nintendo DS dominated with over 350,000 units moved. Compare that to the PSP, which moved just under 60,000 units. Second place goes to the Wii which almost moved more systems than both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 combined last month.
Despite what looks like solid numbers, hardware sales are down 20 percent and software is down six percent compared to last May. But as Gamasutra points out, this is the third-best May sales month after May '08 and May '09.
Hit the break for the top ten games and console sales stats.

happy dog
That video of Dale's corgi is better, though.
Either Mario Galaxy 2 will prove to have legs, or people really do prefer side-scrolling Mario games, or both.
That dog is so cute.
*waits for it*
Alan Wake should have done better. What a great game.
I...it
...wh..wh...WHY IS THE DOGGIE SMILING AT ME
I am glad the corgi is happy.
The PS3 is blowing the 360 away in the rest of the world YTD, so seeing these numbers is kind of thought-provoking. Thank god Microsoft has the US under it's sway, or the Xbox program would be in bad shape. Also, the PSP does quite well in the rest of the world, selling almost as many units total as the 360.
^_____^
THIS
That is all.
does it pay off?
Well to be fair, this does only accounts for 1 week of SMG2 sales, so selling over half a million units in just one week, really isn't crap numbers. Looking at the big picture, SMG2 has sold more worldwide than RDR has on either the PS3, or the 360 individually, obviously not combined. So yeah it will have good legs, just like most Nintendo games do.
Don't worry Holmes, people love Mario, no matter what dimension he's in.
Except when you add the American numbers to Worldwide sales (America is a part of the world, last I checked) then the Xbox outsold the PS3 by almost 100,000 units Worldwide.
So Pokota you are wrong, and SC you are advocating wrongness.
Not that I give a fuck anymore, I just was curious and checked the numbers.
Madness.
100,000 units out of however many MILLIONS? Hate to say it but I'm pretty damn sure there are FAR FAR FAR more than 100,000 Xboxes in BINS too.
If the difference really is 100,000 units, taking into account the 50%+ failure rate on the 360, that indicates there are FAR more PS3's actually out there being used.
It really doesn't matter to me, but I'm not sure what numbers you're looking at. The Worldwide Year to Date I mentioned includes everything, and has the PS3 ahead of the 360 by a substantial margin. The 360 has sold like hotcakes since the redesign launched, but the first half of this year was terrific for Sony.
Well, what numbers is everyone looking at? I don't know where to get numbers besides vgcharts, and they show the PS3 selling 1 million more than the 360 so far this year (4.5 to 3.5). The 360 is likely to gain a lot of ground with their redesign and temporary price cuts, just like the PS3.
Face it the PS3 is in the third place and always will be! With the new Slim 360 and a price cut BYE BYE SONY!
ill go with option D
most wii gamers have shit taste, im talkin about casuals here
When the hell did 2D Mario become casual? Also, I think the average gamer just prefers Mario in 2D, seeing as Galaxy 1 sold like 5 million and NSMB DS sold somewhere around 25 million.
ill take a wild guess and say the "average gamer" prefers good games
you know, like mario galaxy 2
this proves the wiis casual crowd simply has no taste
Also, GODDAMN you, Corgis! Being all little and cute and awesome. You're the cats of the dog world.
