Max Payne is set to start filming soon, but will it be painful to watch? photo

Last time we heard about the movie adaptation of Max Payne, the man who would be responsible for filling the iconic shoes of the one-man army was still up in the air. One quick peek over at IGN, and the facts now seem to indicate otherwise.

Filming is set to start on March 2 in Toronto, and Max will be played by none other than the bad boy himself: Mark Wahlberg.  Just how true to the game the movie will stay is still up for debate (do they ever?), but we do know of at least one common thread: Max's family is murdered, and he has every intention of exacting swift revenge. Further details are scarce as usual, but we'll keep you abreast of them as they unfold.

With the Max Payne game and the subsequent sequel being considered a sacred IP by many gamers, their reactions to the finished film should prove quite noteworthy. Whatever you do John, please don't let this movie suck. The fans are depending on you.

Gamers like this game for the gunplay, the story and characters weren't the strong points of either game. The movie will suck, don't let it change your view of marky mark.

The biggest question on my mind is will it have a frustratingly lame dream scene where you have to stay on the right path through a lame maze of interconnected lines?
the story and characters weren't the strong points of either game
I thought the narration, plot twists, and yes even the characters were the strong point for the 2nd game for me.

I really enjoyed the way the story unfolded. I'm almost curious if they're going to cover the arc of both movies in one (with some changes to the plot).

By video game standards, characters and story were great. By movie standards, they are strung together cliches.

I think the movie actually has promise, but considering how the games were very derivitive of noir and Hong Kong actions flicks, why would you want a movie based on a game inspired by movies? I'm going to echo the desires of most of d-toid and say just give me Max Payne 3 please.

Mickey Rourke was my first choice though I guess he's getting kinda old now. Hugh Jackman would have also been a good choice. I just hope they stick with the film noir pulp crime novel atmosphere of the games. I wonder who will play Mona Sax?

Movies need to start getting better. That, or Hollywood needs to just break off the damn map and become a floating island of collagen and wasted dreams.

Then it'll eventually stop in the middle of the Pacific ocean and people will charge admission to go gawking through the streets, trying to match skeletons to their respective bodies. I found George Lucas, 500 points!

Epic.

one of the things that made the game really cool is that it took place during a blizzard in NEW YORK! how are they going to pull that off in TORONTO in MARCH - sure they might get some snow, but a blizzard???

Oh, god...AgentMOO fucking wins this thread.

I’m cautiously optimistic about this movie. I think Marky Mark can certainly pull it off, but I wonder how much the movie will deviate from the storyline in the game. And brainderailment, I don’t know what you’re talking about...while the bullet time was a lot of fun, I thought the story was very engrossing, and it really elevated the game past the bullet time mechanic, which was cool for a while but would’ve probably gotten old before too long (cf. Stranglehold).

This movie does not need to be made.
Given how much Payne takes it's style from existing action movies this thing is redundant before the cameras even start rolling.

Just slap a Max Pain cover on the front of that Thomas Jane "Punisher" movie from a year or so ago, cause that's what you'll be getting.

Wedge wins a common sense point. The story is fine for an evolving medium like video games, but it doesn't cut it in terms of a film story.
