Max Payne 3 troubled, Rockstar Vancouver worse for wear photo

It doesn't look like the s**t is going to stop hitting the fan any time soon for Rockstar Games, no matter how much of a joke they want to make about it. While Rockstar San Diego has been the main focus of most of the working condition complaints, it seems that Rockstar Vancouver is pulling the same crap, and being just as mismanaged.

Speaking with Joystiq, an anonymous, former Rockstar Vancouver employee said, "Virtually everything said in the original 'Rockstar wives' letter and by current and former Rockstar San Diego employees in the comments applies to my experience at Rockstar Vancouver."

He notes the multiple delays of Max Payne 3, and says that even the recent third delay's deadline is most likely not going to be hit. "The game's story just went through another total re-write earlier this month (the third that I am aware of in the past two years) and that [means] the team would have to have all of the content done by April or May to make that August release date,” he said.

Evidently, the devs over at Rockstar Vancouver are working 14-16 hour days and their holiday vacation time was cut out as well. I know that putting a game out takes a lot of work and many long hours, but this does sound a bit more extreme than usual and gives me absolutely no hope for Max Payne 3 to be any good. [Thanks, DaedHead8]

The title image only reminds me of how awful those Max Payne 3 screen shots looked.

Usually I wouldn't complain before we even see the game in action but those screen shots looked so far removed from the gritty film noir aesthetic of the first two games.

Wait, what's changing with the story now?

"So, he lost his wife and kid, drinks all the time, and somehow ended up in one of the most dangerous places in the world. How can we make it any worse for him?"

"See his own movie?"

I hope they rewrite the part of Max Payne's baldness and bring back his slick hair. Playing as someone as bald as an egg doesn't cut it for me.

I'm actually hopeful that this doesn't release as a big Max Payne fan. It looked slapdash and generic from early indication - and what happened to the gritty film noir look?

Yeah, I'm going to call 'let this one die'.

I don't know about anyone else, but out of the 22 jobs I've had over the last 15 years, not a one of them seemed properly managed from an employee point of view.

Those jobs ranged from small business to gigantor corporation.

As far as I'm concerned, these are usually the steadfast rules of being employed:

1) All your co-workers are idiots.
2) You're always smarter than you boss

There's a word they made up for it somewhere... umm.. what is it now.. Oh yeah.. Work.

This game looks like Max Payne about as much as Zelda looks like Metroid.

I wish games were cheap enough to be scrapped and started over, but budgets now-a-days are way too high to do something like that. I just wonder what the hell Rockstar was thinking when they took Max Payne and threw out the entire noir feel of the series for a generic looking shooter feel. WTF? It defies reason.

Well Alan Wake should be done soon. Just cancel this Max Payne and give it back to them.

My first thought was, "Good. Sequels are boring". But then I remembered that people work at these companies. I hope everyone this gets sorted out, the game ships, and everyone gets paid.

@Chronic: Remedy sold the rights to Max Payne just after the sequel was released (it was Take Two who published that one); so it's been Rockstar's property for years now. Remedy own the rights to Alan Wake though, Microsoft are just publishing it.

I have decently high hopes for this game. Rockstar Vancouver made Bully, and I think Max Payne is something they can pull off.

I don't really like any of Rockstar's games (Bully is probably my favorite) so I'm not particularly worried about the fact that their games might not come out soon and/or suck.

The Houser brothers and their "anti-videogame logic" philosophy on game design embodies everything that I don't like about gaming today. To hear that they are terrible bosses as well just validates my opinion that they are generally misguided.

Soooo you have a game company that focuses on making socially irresponsible games being socially irresponsible? Oh, sweet irony.
Shame about red dead redemption if it doesn't make release tho...

I always thought Rockstar had spread themselves too thin by buying up various studios. I mean they've got Rockstar Japan, Rockstar Leeds, Rockstar Lincoln, Rockstar London, Rockstar New England, Rockstar North, Rockstar San Diego, Rockstar Toronto, Rockstar Vancouver & Rockstar Vienna. And you know what they say; Too many Rockstars spoils the fun.

Wow, first the complaints, then Red Dead, and now this?

What the Hell is up with RockStar all of a sudden? First the employee complaints, Red Dead, and now this?

Also, another total rewrite?

I'm more sad for Red Dead than Max Payne, but this still sucks. I hope this shit gets sorted out, but at the same time I also want at least Red Dead released. Why do I get the feeling that we aren't going to see these games released?

A third rewrite. Why? No one from the original first two titles is even alive at this point except maybe Bravura and I'm not even sure on that one. So what the hell is causing snags with the script? Anything will do since there's really not much they have to hold to continuity wise...

@ Jonathan Holmes

So misguided they have one of the most popular franchises ever under their belts and a rabid fanbase.

And what is "anti-videogame logic"? I have a feeling it is some sort of idea on your part that they lose out on real gameplay for story and cinematic concerns. The problem with that is you do not decide what gameplay is. I'm sure you were raised on Mario and the like and consider that gameplay, but I was raised on Zork and Space Quest... to me, GTA is much more gameplay filled than a Mario game, which is more a pure kid's toy.

Oh yes, I said that.

The point is that what gameplay is depends on the person and probably what they were playing during their early formative years.

Well, hopefully they get something to show for all of their hard work. Perhaps the rewrite was a good thing because when I first heard the story details, it certainly didn't sound very Max Panye'ish to me.

I think the most important part to take from this story is that the unnamed source is a FORMER employee.
It coud be just as he said, or this could be someone fired for not doing his job well and vindictivly trying to bad mouth the company. Without knowing what this guy did or why he no longer works there, it's hard to say. Especially when A LOT of games nowadays get delays and rewrites since competition is so high with so many great games releasing.

Time will tell. There's simply nothing to back up this mystery man's take at this point.

Idk this all sounds really bad.I love the Max Payne franchise and i really hate to hear the third game i've been waiting so long for is in trouble. Rockstar needs to get it's shit together and fig it out. Tho the rewrite could be good..i was honestly a little bothered by the private security in Brazil thing...All and all i am gonna cross my fingers.

Have Rockstar ever put out a bad game though? I don't recall any. You never know if it's true, or bitter ex-employees trashing their old boss for the sake of it.

I don't know about you guys, but red dead redemption looks amazing, even though that spouse says that the game is in deep trouble. with the amount of stuff and assessts rock star has shown off, surely if the game was in that bad a shape, we would have seen nothing on it, whereas we have been fed steady streams of info and videos?

Just focus on Red Dead Redemption you silly mofos. Get it done and get it done right... then fire all of these shit talking employees and replace them with new ones. They won't be working on it forever (unless the ones talking are just ex-employees). I would love to be working 14-16 hour days on amazing games and have a good steady job like that. Hire me, I will live in the god damn office. Cry more about working on video games in an air-conditioned office... I used to work 14-16 hour days doing shit construction type work in the blistering heat and freezing ass cold to get my bills paid and take care of a family. Seriously Rockstar, hire me and I will make your fancy games for you... I don't know how to program, but I will do things... and not complain like these sacks.

We're in the middle of a recession and motherfuckers are complaining about TOO much work. Nice. Just give me Red Dead Redemption on time and in amazing shape, thanks.

After all the PS3 snubbing they've been doing I can't really say that I'm unhappy to hear about Rockstar having a hard time. Hopefully this will humble them at least somewhat.
