Max Payne 3 is going to be quite a departure for Rockstar's morbid action series, featuring an older, more grizzled (not to mention balder) Max and a brand new Sao Paulo setting, the game's come a far way from its New York noir roots. So far, in fact, that Payne will no longer even be voiced by James McCaffrey, who brought the character to life in the first two games. This will be a very different game indeed.
"We're good at casting," states Rockstar's Jeronimo Barrera.
"All the Max Payne themes will remain intact - manipulation, betrayal, and the stuff that really made Max Payne," adds art director Rob Nelson.
Sounds like Rockstar is performing fanboy damage control and trying to convince people that this new game won't suck. Of course, you can rarely win with sequels. If you keep it exactly the same, people complain that you're not doing enough. If you change it, people complain that you've done too much. It doesn't matter how good Max Payne 3 may turn out to be, I can foresee a lot of angry purists coming out of the woodwork for this.
We're not sure who the new voice actor will be. My vote goes to Frank Welker.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!

Or perhaps it's about some other guy who just happened to have the same name (only 2 logical explanations for this retarded change of art direction).
I liked the old max payne, because he didn't look anything like a hero, more like an anti-hero. Just some normal guy who's life got screwed over. No big muscles, just an average joe. Rockstar took the entire essence out of the game, and transformed Max into just another cliche action hero. Fail.
Voice suggestion:
James McCaffrey.
Lets yust see how things work out with this 3th one .

Fuck Yes! FUCK FUCK FUCK YES! Walken should feature in every film, game or TV show ever made.
Walken is the King, always has been, always will be.
no one can argue with Walken.
I do not like that the game is not going to take place in New York City.
I do not like that they are getting a new voice actor.
I do, however, absolutely love and adore this franchise. And I am getting very, very worried right about now.
If anyone can pull it off though, it's Rockstar... Hopefully.
Jim is absolutely right and I don't mind change at all. In part 2 Max also looked quite different than in Max payne 1. However, he still looked like a believable incarnation of Max Payne. What they did now is just crazy, it's an entirely different person. I don't mind the new setting, or that he aged a bit. But this is like casting a bacon sandwich for the part of luke skywalker in star wars. Complete bullshit.
One of these men is not John McClane to me.
Voice transplant, er....
I used the word 'Voice transplant' to emphasize that such a change is impossible.
one of those picture shows and NYPD cop in LA fighting terrorists.
The other shows GENERIC ACTION HERO GUY who jumps onto airplanes, feels no pain, and has jack-all to do with his previous incarnations.
... Well, a guy can hope.
1. He was in the movie
2. Mark Wahlberg IS WEARING A HAT!
Yeah , me too , don't get me started on SOCOM infamous guerilla ; but I think Max Paine got it just right , Sao Paulo HAS a noir feeling to it , I don't think we're gonna see any rainforest ...
Don't worry , Sao Paulo is just as polluted ,depressive and clautrophobic as NY ...
How else would you explain how, through years of drug and alcohol addiction and his life basically turning to one huge pile of shit he has managed to buff up like a beast. Rehab clinics are just full of crack addled bodybuilders, right?
If we get a voice that is made of frosty gravel and oil, then I will feel at worst annoyed. As long as it has a decent noir story and decent jump-n-gun action, I'll be happy.
I sincerely hope they don't mess this up, but I think that they'll do ok with it. Voice acting is really a hit or miss thing in video games for me, as it's either really good, or really bad. Hopefully this is the former.
New voice? Damn. Fatter and bald? Hmm... Sao Paulo? Um...
Max Payne 3? Okay, good. That's all I needed.
Ill pass on judgment until more info releases, the first 2 games were definitely my favorites. I hope they dont screw this one up
He's gonna have more free time now that Sorid Snakeu is out of the picture.
Not too thrilled about Rockstar doing Max Payne 3 all in house either. Rockstar is big on sensationalism and less on meaningful substance. Max Payne 1 & 2 had style in it's story telling, not just in it's bullet time effects and body counts.
Also, it's a sin to change his voice... =P (BTW, You should NEVER, EVER play the First Max Payne with Brazilian translation/voice acting... seriously...)
