Mass Effect street date broken? Cue another gamer's goldrush photo

Okay, this is getting just a little bit ridiculous. First BioShock, then Halo 3, and now possibly Mass Effect as well? Just how many high profile Xbox 360 titles are going to slip out early? Reports are coming in of Mass Effect's street date being broken ten whole days before its release in K-Mart after one lucky gamer posted his discovery online.

Following that, the ever informative NeoGAF forum has sightings of other fortunate members who got their clammy hands on BioWare's highly anticipated shooter/RPG. There's a pretty sweet box shot worth checking out there.

One can but hope that K-Mart stores (and indeed, all stores) across America brace themselves for the early morning slew of phone calls and visits from desperate gamers eager to get themselves a slice of the Mass Effect pie. You better join the rush if you want to get in on the alien lesbian sex at the ground floor.

There's gold in them thar K-Marts.

I don't think I should waste my time tomorrow morning. Would be cool to get it early though.

I just bought Cod4 so I will somehow manage in the coming days without Mass Effect. Also I might buy Assassins Creed on Tuesday when it rolls out.

Praise mah monies!

Yeah, I might actually have to try this. God damn it.

Not surprising. For high profile titles like this, it's almost guaranteed that one or two copies will leak out, after which some person will blog it, the company will catch on, and no gamers will be able to trick the employees any more.

Honestly, I'm sure this kind of thing has been happening for years, and it happens to regular ol' normal profile games too. It's just now we've got the Internet, so it seems like it happens so often, when really it's just a few stores in select places. Unless it's a particular company coming out and saying, "We don't care about street dates, we're selling X game when we get shipments," then I don't care about this "news" any more. Some lucky people got the new game several days before the rest of us. Big whoop.

It's happening more and more, do street dates even mean anything anymore?

Soon there will be no street dates; game companies will just ship the games when the want them sold.

I had it in my hand in Target last night, walked in looking for mario and ended up with mass effect in my hand. The electronics clerk knew nothing handed it to me and just walked off. I got shot down by the people at the registers though when it told them not to sell it. They called the manager over and I was denied.

I've been crying about it ever since.

Pittsburgh Area K-marts are a bust. One of the stores said I was the 6th person to call. :(

@ lancejt:

Odd that they would deny you, when I worked retail we had to sell what we had on the shelves and at the price the sticker specified. In short we had to pay for our own mistakes.

This is just another case of the internet's all seeing eye. Before when a street date was broken, only his friends found out, now he flaunts it all over the net so that he can sell it for super-money.

@ crimsonblade53:

yeah, I actually used to work in retail. I've had to do that stuff before which is why i was so annoyed when I got denied.

Wow, does anyone actually work at a K-mart? I've been on hold at the second one of tried for about five minutes now, waiting for their Electronics department to pick up. This is after I eventually gave up on the first one I called.

I can wait. In fact, it would be better that I wait, for personal reasons.

Still, I've never really understood the reasoning behind sending a product to stores but then saying "Oh, but don't actually sell this until such and such date two or so weeks away." The only good reason I can think of is that they want to make sure that everybody has it ready to go before any one store starts to sell it.

Also, K-Mart sucks ass. At least, the one near where I used to live did, anyway. I'm surprised that they're selling something new early when I'm used to them not having most new stuff until at least a week or so after the official release. Maybe it was just that one particular store, I dunno.

I picked it up this morning, I had called ahead and they figured out in the mean time it wasn't supposed to sell. They said I'd be the only one able to buy it. I've been playing and it's pretty awesome so far.
