Mass Effect possibly going to the big screen, hot alien action unconfirmed photo

It appears as though the sci-fi RPG Mass Effect has taken its first big step toward becoming a movie. Kotaku (via Variety) are reporting that big time comic book movie producer Avi Arad has optioned the rights of Mass Effect from Electronic Arts.

The only thing Arad has to do from this point on is to hire writers, hire a director, and find a studio. Those are all incredibly easy things to do, so expect Mass Effect to hit theatres some time next week. In the meantime, it may be in your best interests to check out some of Arad’s other Emmy award winning titles like Bratz, Fantastic Four, and Nick Fury: Agent of Shield.

Kidding aside, Arad seems to be the right guy to do this film. I thought Iron Man was one of the best comic book movies I have seen in a long time. I just hope that a Mass Effect movie can successfully navigate the scale of the universe, as well as keep me as involved in terms of story. I vote for Vin Diesel with a wicked scar as Commander Shepherd. What say you guys?

I know most people hate the "games becoming movies" thing, but I could see this turning into a Sci-Fi delight.

Seriously though, is Mass Effect even worth it without aliens to pork?

I'd rather see a Mass Effect 2.

Iron Man sucked, hard. That and I hope a movie/game tie-in doesn't happen with the other two ME sequels.

@MrSadistic - Do you not agree that Iron Man was wonderfully funny? I'm not familiar with the comic cannon, so I'm not in a position to critique the story. But damn, I laughed hard and often while watching it.

Iron Man... eh it has its moments but as far as an "origin" story goes, it's not that great. Even when watching it as just a normal action movie, I thought it was disappointing. Downey Jr. was pretty awesome as Stark though.

This is a rare time I can see a RPG becoming a movie. Sure you had choices, but it was basically just which alien would you do.

Well, since I named my character Jack Shepard after Matthew Fox's character on LOST, I hafta go with him. Oh, and he kinda does look like him.

Personal feelings towards movie is extreme interest. I loved the first book, looking forward to finishing up some other books so I can read the second one. And I loved the game so I'm looking forward to the movie and I hope it is good. Break the stareotype of video game movies sucking; PLEASE!!

As for Vin Diesel for commander Shepard that sounds like a good idea.

I can't wait to buy the DVD and only get to watch it three times in a single DVD player before I have to buy another copy.

I loved Mass Effect, but I'm not sure I can say the same about a possible movie-remake. I mean, I'm getting kinda sick of every half decent game being turned into a movie. Not every game storyline is viable to be shoved into a shoddy 2 and a half hour timeslot!

So I'm assuming 90% of the movie will be spent in elevators and talking?

I thought the whole point of an RPG was to make it your own story. I don't want to see the female Shepherd I played portrayed by Vin Diesel in a movie!
Would be a different story (literally, har har) if it's going to be based on one of the books, or is an origin story of some sort like the comics are purported to be.
Then, perhaps, it could be awesome.
