If you've been Mass Effecting since the beginning, you'll know that your path is totally different from the next guy's, and that your decisions continue to affect situations into the next game. And now into the third game, Mass Effect 3. Bioware says that gamers will see their stories continue, and that things are getting a little crazy now with over 1,000 story variations lined up.
"Numerically, it's over 1,000 variables that we'll have access to for shaping the Mass Effect 3 experience for people who've played the previous games," Bioware's Casey Hudson told PC Zone magazine.
He says that the team plans out the larger story elements from one game to the next, but the small details are much more work. It turns out that they record what a player has done in a play through, and then task the writers with building new storylines from that.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
(And I mean that in a good way.)
I am incredibly excited for this.
If it wasn't on PC, that & the Fables might have convinced me to part with some cash to Microsoft, & then I'd feel a little dirty. Kinda like when I bought a monitor from PC World.
Also, FUCK YES!!
While I know a lot of people who like to see all the possible ooutcomess in my opinion, and I know I'm not aloe here, Mass Effect is one of those games best played straight through the first time. The idea is to create a story based around your character. I mean to each his own as always, I'm not trying to argue with you, but Mass Effect isn't a game that I think is meant to played in the fashion of replaying it over and over to see how many different endings you can get. Kinda kills it.
I was gripping the sofa within my ass cheeks towards the end of the game.
EXCITED.
FOR.
WORDS.
1000 IS A NUMBER.
I hope Bioware can better deliver on this in the second sequel than they did in Mass Effect 2. I liked what they did but I want more. /addict
If they're relatively independent, it only takes 10 binary variables for more than 1000. Even fewer if it's not binary. More if they're interrelated.
Mass Effect 2 had so little replay value to me, I mean, there was really only one "Big," thing that it all changed, and that was who lived or died. In Mass Effect 1, you had whether or not to kill Wrex, Kaiden or Ashley, the Council, and crapload of other things that were far more significant than decisions in Mass Effect 2. I want more "Big Choices," not whether or not I'm going to have a hamburger or a fucking steak.
No Tali no buy.
That's insane.
They had best not make ME4. Or if they do, they need to make a new plotline.
ME2 is still my GoTY, and I was hoping they would accommodate all the different play throughs. Great news, can't wait.
I'm excited for this, I wonder if it's going to be out next year.

"I somehow doubt this. Both of the Mass Effect games, while very good, have limited variation in terms of what's "Good" and "Evil". I don't see 3 doing anything differently."
Because you know anything about it, right?
Do you know this during your first time through? No
Is your first time through the game so awesome that you don't care that a lot of the "choice" is somewhat illusory? Yes
I think it's reasonable that Bioware avoided writing themselves into a corner in the first two games. I hope that they allow the finales to diverge significantly, but honestly, I'm happy to put my disbelief on hold and just enjoy myself.
I love Mass Effect, but most of choices you made the first, just lead to little dialogs in the second that had no actual impact. It was nice to see the Internal Affairs lady from Noveria again in Illium, but it didn't do anything. She never even bought me that beer she owed me. I saved Wrex, but it didn't really change that much on Tuchanka from if you hadn't. Its nice to see the little nods to the past games, but the game is still too binary. Maybe the 3rd game will change it up a little, but I kind of doubt it.
I want actual effects on how the game is played. Maybe if you saved Wrex, he gives you a cool weapon in the third game. Maybe if you saved Morinth in the sencond game instead of Samara, you can have her seduce/kill someone you need removed without fighting them. Just something dammit. Show me some content that is actually different because of the choices I've made other than minor differences in cut scenes.
Sure, it works great and it allows for a larger audience to enjoy the game, but it really was lacking compared to ME1.
Glad to hear they'll beef up the storyline tho. Day one for me.
Bad pun aside, I probably should get started on the first one sometimes.
...Right after I'm finished with FFXIII...
And in less retarded news i think they should have your romances do something, like BAM MIRANDAS PREGNANT AND YOU DECIDE TO LEAVE HER
@Dreadhawk, FFFFUUUUU. Get your xbox back now son.
@Holy Taco:
I only lost Jack, though I am a little bitter towards Bioware as to how (I know making a game is hard, but a second set of cutscenes for where I lost her would be nice)
Yeah, I love me some Mass Effect.
I got a preowned copy but it didnt come with the Cerberus code, is it worth picking up?
