Mass Effect 3 gets complicated with 1,000+ variables photo

If you've been Mass Effecting since the beginning, you'll know that your path is totally different from the next guy's, and that your decisions continue to affect situations into the next game. And now into the third game, Mass Effect 3. Bioware says that gamers will see their stories continue, and that things are getting a little crazy now with over 1,000 story variations lined up.

"Numerically, it's over 1,000 variables that we'll have access to for shaping the Mass Effect 3 experience for people who've played the previous games," Bioware's Casey Hudson told PC Zone magazine.

He says that the team plans out the larger story elements from one game to the next, but the small details are much more work. It turns out that they record what a player has done in a play through, and then task the writers with building new storylines from that.

I am still playing ME2, and boy can Bioware make a great game! All exclusives aside, PS3 sucks the shit right out of my asshole!!!!!!

I love the Mass Effect series. But I still haven't played Mass Effect 2... Mostly because my Xbox's been in my apartment in Chicago, and I'm out at my ma's place.

I am incredibly excited for this.

Who needs a 360 for Mass Effect 1 or 2. Awesome game, also available on PC.

If it wasn't on PC, that & the Fables might have convinced me to part with some cash to Microsoft, & then I'd feel a little dirty. Kinda like when I bought a monitor from PC World.

I really hope the decisions from the first game echo even more in the third iteration.

Also, FUCK YES!!

I've played through Mass Effect 2 five times and have three separate Shepards. It's pretty crazy that a game that came out in January is STILL casting a shadow over every release for GOTY.

I actually don't like when developers do things like this. I like to see all the content a game offers but I'm probably only going to play the game once or twice. I don't like when developers efforts are wasted because I have only seen half of those variables. Hopefully if I play super good then super evil, I'll see the glut of possible outcomes.

While I know a lot of people who like to see all the possible ooutcomess in my opinion, and I know I'm not aloe here, Mass Effect is one of those games best played straight through the first time. The idea is to create a story based around your character. I mean to each his own as always, I'm not trying to argue with you, but Mass Effect isn't a game that I think is meant to played in the fashion of replaying it over and over to see how many different endings you can get. Kinda kills it.

Coolio. I literally just finished ME2 last night and I've got to say it was even more immersive and fantastic than the first game.

I was gripping the sofa within my ass cheeks towards the end of the game.

I'm really excited for this, ME2 is still my GOTY. However, I really hope they'll be able to make the decisions from past games a bit more impactful now that they don't have to worry about future games of Shepard's story.

@Dameon337: How do I get MY PS3 to do that?! Mine just sits there collecting dust. :(

I hope Bioware can better deliver on this in the second sequel than they did in Mass Effect 2. I liked what they did but I want more. /addict

@mathew blevins, I understand what your trying to stay but sticking to one console makes you missing out on a lot. The fact that sony pushes out so many exclusives a year (good ones at that) it is worth the purchase. Ignorant ways makes people miss out on a lot. and why would you need a 360 when I can play all their games on the computer. And as all 360 games look better than ps3 I guess you aren't following the news. Most games now are ps3 lead development so its kind of backwards now.

1000 variables will equal a heck of a lot more than 1000 storylines, so which is it?

If they're relatively independent, it only takes 10 binary variables for more than 1000. Even fewer if it's not binary. More if they're interrelated.

Well, as long as they don't mess around with the gameplay anymore.. or get fucked up the ass by EA.

Mass Effect 2 had so little replay value to me, I mean, there was really only one "Big," thing that it all changed, and that was who lived or died. In Mass Effect 1, you had whether or not to kill Wrex, Kaiden or Ashley, the Council, and crapload of other things that were far more significant than decisions in Mass Effect 2. I want more "Big Choices," not whether or not I'm going to have a hamburger or a fucking steak.

Come on. I think you guys are giving them WAY too much credit. A game with 1,000 variables should NOT be impressing anyone these days, esp. when most of them are likely going to change a line or two of dialogue here or there. I am not saying ME3 won't be awesome because it assuredly will be, but spewing all over Bioware for an announcement like this is just plain over-exuberance.

And yet all I care about is are Tali and Garrus going to be in it. No crap like they did to Wrex either, full squad mates with lots of dialogue.

No Tali no buy.

They had best not make ME4. Or if they do, they need to make a new plotline.

I somehow doubt this. Both of the Mass Effect games, while very good, have limited variation in terms of what's "Good" and "Evil". I don't see 3 doing anything differently.

I think I have.. what? 6 sheps now. All of them are saves from the first game, where there was a period I was flat broke and only could spend 20 bucks on ME, so when I got bored with TF2 I played that a fuckton.

I'm excited for this, I wonder if it's going to be out next year.

Is there a huge variation between plots in each Mass Effect playthrough? No
Do you know this during your first time through? No
Is your first time through the game so awesome that you don't care that a lot of the "choice" is somewhat illusory? Yes

I think it's reasonable that Bioware avoided writing themselves into a corner in the first two games. I hope that they allow the finales to diverge significantly, but honestly, I'm happy to put my disbelief on hold and just enjoy myself.

While I don't doubt it that number, I still doubt the vast majority will have any actual impact on the game, or the direction of the story.

I love Mass Effect, but most of choices you made the first, just lead to little dialogs in the second that had no actual impact. It was nice to see the Internal Affairs lady from Noveria again in Illium, but it didn't do anything. She never even bought me that beer she owed me. I saved Wrex, but it didn't really change that much on Tuchanka from if you hadn't. Its nice to see the little nods to the past games, but the game is still too binary. Maybe the 3rd game will change it up a little, but I kind of doubt it.

I want actual effects on how the game is played. Maybe if you saved Wrex, he gives you a cool weapon in the third game. Maybe if you saved Morinth in the sencond game instead of Samara, you can have her seduce/kill someone you need removed without fighting them. Just something dammit. Show me some content that is actually different because of the choices I've made other than minor differences in cut scenes.

I hope they will improve the combat from ME2. Without a flourished RPG system, after 10+ hours of gameplay, it got stale quickly. Eventually I was just playing for the storyline, because the combat was more boring then playing a REALLY crappy game.

Sure, it works great and it allows for a larger audience to enjoy the game, but it really was lacking compared to ME1.

Glad to hear they'll beef up the storyline tho. Day one for me.

And in less retarded news i think they should have your romances do something, like BAM MIRANDAS PREGNANT AND YOU DECIDE TO LEAVE HER
