This is hilarious. A conservative Web site has attacked BioWare's Mass Effect for its sex scenes. While you could attack them for being cynical marketing ploys that were disappointing and bland in execution, those interviewed by the Cybercast News Network actually attack it for being "explicitly graphic." Yes, apparently a shot of a bit of arse is now sexually explicit material. In other news, a woman got arrested for exposing her bare leg in public! More at eleven.

The playable character can become romantically involved… This storyline culminates in a cutscene in which the characters copulate in full digital nudity.

... Unfortunately, Mass Effect… even goes so far as to allow homosexuality to be on par with heterosexuality and heterosexuality outside of its proper context of marriage.

It's when you read statements like the above that you realize the shocking reality -- plenty of people still wish we lived in the dark ages and were sexually, intellectually repressed. It's quite scary to think that there are still unevolved, backwards-thinking dinosaurs like this, who swoon at the sight of bare flesh and are terrified of homosexuality, but there you go. These are the people who need to create their own little towns far away from reality where they can burn each other for witchcraft, like the good old days.

So, Mass Effect is now "feeding porn to kids," because of material far more tame than anything on television. It was so lame, in fact, that the BBFC gave it a "12" rating in the UK. In America of course, the game is "M" for mature, so any claims it's marketed to minors over there can bugger right off. This is just another case of 1940's housewives and Victorian-minded nutcases over-reacting.

Business as usual, then.

I like the bit about "out of the context of marriage". Like no one has sex outside of marriage anymore, more like no one has sex once they're married!

While I can agree with some of their views on sex because I'm a Christian, that was indeed the lamest sex scene I've ever scene. A 13 year old would be desperate if that's all he can find.

I bet the devs have a totally better version somewhere on their hard drives.

I've seen adds on daytime TV far more explicit than that, these people must be taking too many stupid pills. Also, it's not really homosexuality, seeing as the asari are somewhat gender amibuous. And didn't jesus always say that lesbianism was just fine anyway?

Interesting that with all the framerate drops the game experiences that you only get to see a few seconds of naked butt. Very clever Bioware...veeeery clever.

Side point:

Notice no gamer has ever gone out and attacked someone after seeing nudity and/or sex in a video game. Worst case scenario some kid gets a little chaffing on his penis.

I must say my inner gamer and inner christian are fighting a bit while writing this comment. On the one hand I am in agreement that homosexuality and sex outside of marriage are bad things. However, on the other hand they are ignoring certain facts in order to attack this game, such as the M rating, the small scale of the nudity, and the fact the player has to initialize the sex scene. These make me dismiss their arguement, however, in my eyes, an arguement could still be made for the fact the content even exists. But, because of society's standards right now, it's an arguement that would have to spark a cultural shift in order to win.

Ignorance is bliss once again. You old farts! We should be beyond the mentality that video games are for children by now. Oh how dare they add sex to a video game! The poor children. Oh the children! boohoo! Where were the out cries when God of War did it? Twice! Every once in a while one of these ignorant nongamers, somehow comes across a mature game for adults! They see lude content and cry foul! Maybe because they haven't seen a video game since 1983!

I think it is funny that a movie with the same sex scene would be rated PG-13 in the US, but since it is a game it is Mature. If the rest of the game was full RPG no shooting, so it would be totally boring, they would still rate it mature.

Titanic has full body nudity, sexual content and such, and it is PG-13. While the Bourne Trilogy has violence, shooting, hand to hand combat, blood, and it rated PG-13. (I am sure there is worse in each area that are rated PG-13 in the US, but you get my point.)

Unless I have missed something, this game shows less than Titanic and Bourne Identity put together. The romance storyline is avoidable, and well... this world is stupid when we let people unfairly rate movies and games to different standards.

Now, I'm a Christian and most of you would probably consider me conservative (though I'm not particularly conservative by usual "Christian" standards), but I have no problem with this scene. If you have to depict a sex scene, this is how I prefer to see it. It's descriptive enough and it gets the scene across very well, but without actually being graphic, asses and curvy parts aside. Tasteful, in other words, and not entirely gratuitous. I'd say, all things considered, that BioWare took the high road.

And again, it's clearly marketed towards adults, not kids. But just try to convince the general public of that. Sigh.

@Sharpless: Your talk of "moderation" and "conservatism" disgusts me. Let me explain: although the story of human history is one of depravity and error, it has reached an apex in producing the youth of our modern age -- namely, me.

Speaking as the best possible outcome of humankind, I gently remind you that your views have inevitably become antiquated. A post... in which I futilely argue with the author of the article and the blatant morons quoted by him (her?) as if they will actually somehow see it and stop being blatant morons.

The game is "clearly marketed to minors," Cathy Ruse, a lawyer and senior fellow for legal studies at the Family Research Council, told Cybercast News Service.

No, Ms. Ruse, it is not. The game is M-rated. Lern 2 reed.

This storyline culminates in a cutscene in which the characters copulate in full digital nudity.

Didn't your parents teach you that lying is wrong, Mr. (or perhaps Ms.? I don't really give a fuck.) Evan Moore? Or did you have some of those shitty parents who don't take responsibility for anything and try to scape-goat everything for their horrible parenting? Or maybe it was the opposite end of the spectrum, and your parents were the up-tight religious types how beat you with a flail merely because you had impure thoughts about a female (or male?). Either one of those could explain this stupidity.

The game is rated "M" for mature

See? Now this directly contradicts your earlier quote from Ms. Ruse that the game is "clearly marketed to minors." Inconsistency is bad and makes you look retarded, Mr. (Ms.?) Moore.

Bob Waliszewki, media specialist with Focus on the Family, told Cybercast News Service, "We never shy away from sexuality in the media. It's just a question of how is that sexuality portrayed. One can use the media to portray some very healthy forms of sexuality. And when done wisely with taste and age-appropriateness, it can be done well."

"Unfortunately," he said, "Mass Effect doesn't do that and even goes so far as to allow homosexuality to be on par with heterosexuality and heterosexuality outside of its proper context of marriage."

Did you have a point in there somewhere, Mr. Bob Waliszewki, or do you just like hearing sound coming out of your face?

Ruse said, "I don't know if people are really aware about what's in this game, but [the people who made it] should lose a lot of money, and they should lose consumer confidence, because this is a stupid move."

No, Ms. Ruse, what is stupid is railing on and on regarding something about which you obviously don't have the slightest clue, making yourself look like a damn fool in the process.

"People try to raise a straw-man argument and say that people from my perspective are saying that everyone who views something is going to go out and become a serial sex killer. Nobody's saying that," Ruse said.

No, Ms. Ruse. Wrong again. Jack Thompson most assuredly has said exactly that, and has said it quite often. You just haven't done your homework on this at all, have you? But... I'll allow that Jack Thompson and those like him are "nobody," so I'll give you that one, in this case.

"But, it is profoundly naive to suggest that feeding children graphic sexual material is going to have no effect on their psyche. That's just stupid to think that," she added.

That's true, in a broad sense. However, since what is in Mass Effect obviously isn't "graphic sexual material," you're making a non sequitur in the context of this particular discussion.

"This is about money," Ruse said. "This isn't about a First Amendment debate. This is about [BioWare] making as much money as it can. It's putting elements in its games which they think will help them sell more games. They don't care about what they're doing to kids."

They're not doing anything to kids, you dumb bitch. Not intentionally at any rate, as you keep implying. THE. GAME. IS. RATED. M.

She concluded, "This is unethical, and they have a duty to be good corporate citizens. There's no First Amendment right to exploit children ... They're making money at the expense of children in America, and they ought to be vilified for that."

You keep saying children. Children children children. Once again, does the big fat M - Mature 17+ - Content Rated By ESRB label on the front of the box not mean anything to you, or are you just blind?

"When parental involvement is at a high level," Waliszewki said, the warning labels provided by the ESRB could deter children from being exposed to inappropriate material. But he warned that "in many cases, where parents are less involved and oblivious to the world of entertainment these days, an 'M' rating is almost a badge of endorsement."

And this is the fault of the game... how? You said it yourself, "where parents are less involved and oblivious to the world". That's the problem. Period.

"Parents really just need to be involved in [their children's] entire entertainment world," he said. "There's just too much gunk out there for parents to be 'hands-off.' They have to be involved. They have to know ... what their kids are into in today's entertainment."

Finally, someone in this god-awful article says something worthwhile.

Ruse noted that "most states have what's called 'Harmful to Minors' laws on the books that say that selling sexual material that a jury would deem 'patently offensive to minors, which lacks literary, artistic, political or scientific value.' ... might be prosecutable."

And, yet again, Ms. Ruse, what in the high holy fuck does this have to do with Mass Effect?

However, she also noted that these laws are "very likely not enforced." Rather than new laws, "we need state and local prosecutors with spines and backbones to prosecute some of these companies that are violating the law" in order to prevent children from being exposed to indecent material, she said.

If there were any violations of the law actually occurring, I would totally agree with you. However, since this is not occurring, the only thing I can gather from this is that Cathy Ruse, a lawyer and senior fellow for legal studies at the Family Research Council, is a huge fucking idiot.
