@Chris: Not every character in Mass Effect is going to be a scientist or engineer that does the pre-combat planning or tactical analysis. James is a munitions expert; his specialty is blowing shit up, not decrypting Prothean culture or discovering new technobabble engineering advances.
This means that, yes, he may not contribute to the advancement of the story. And yes, since he's a new character, he won't really be as interesting as characters like Garrus, Liara, or Tali that you've had two prior games to get to know and develop. However, James adds really valuable diversity to the ME3 cast, and not just because of his ethnicity. He's a solider, he has a more direct and less nuanced way of looking at the world, and that's great. It's different from the rest of the main cast and it makes for a richer, more believable setting.

Funimations role in this is probably because BioWare (a western company) sought out a company to do the movie with and found Funimation (a Western company) was the most responive. Given the way Western dev's are being towards Eastern dev's, you got to give the eastern animation companies a little rope so they can stand behind their game industry brothers.
Either way its not like Funimation isn't suited for it, you've got to figure after so many years they'd pick up a thing of two, specially in the dubbing and editing departments. James is bad, but he's not as poorly written as Miranda.
But really Tali, Jack, Samara and Grunt are the only really well-written characters in any of the three games. Even then Jack's the only significantly deep, notable character.

I agree with garethxxgod. Gears of War characters have more personality than Vega, but people still hate on Gears for some insane reason.
You know to be honest I didn't like vega when they revealed him, but warmed up a little to him when I played 3.

I liked all of the new characters, for the most part. James played well with the old squad, and I genuinely enjoyed his "hang-out" times with Garrus. All in all, a character I wouldn't mind seeing more of. Hell, I probably would have romanced him if he was an option. (As it was, Cortez wasn't too shabby either.)

I never use Vega but that's because he's human. Hell, if I had the choice I probably wouldn't bring Shepard on missions either. Silly, lame humans.

@Tristrix I didn't -dig- him per say. And let me be clear, I didn't romance him either - partly for the reason you gave, and partly because it felt weird for my Shepherd, who'd gone this far alone, to just hook up with some guy at the very end. But if I had to have picked one, I would have gone with him - I never felt like his feelings of loss and emptiness were ever maudlin, and I empathized a lot there. I understood him and his behavior, which is more than I can say for some party members. (*cough* Jacob *cough*)
I gave James a chance and I actually liked him. As far as gameplay goes, I felt compelled to take him on many missions as an Adept, as as a pure Soldier he makes Garrus look like a wimp with Carnage, Frag Grenades, and better passives compared to Concussive Shot and Prox Mines. Prox Mines have their moments, but require a lot of micro and usually get wasted on some husk or Cannibal that I could have just Warp -> Geth Assault Rifle burst in a second.
Also, don't hassle Vega. Kaidan's been busy being the worst character for three whole games now. Give him credit where it's due.

Anyone who thinks he is a worthless Meathead is judging him purely by the fact that he is huge instead of, you know, actually talking to him and learning about him as if he were a Mass Effect character. James is awesome and his backstory is quite good.
I sure don't care about the story of BIG-BICEPS McBROKILLINGTON. I'd love to hear about the characters like Mordin, or Thane, or ones that have interesting backstories that were eluded to, but not entirely fleshed out.

I think there is probably something to the "nerds don't like burly lads" argument. I mean, most of the complaints I've heard about him are along the lines of "ugh, he's so huge, let's recycle some MST3K jokes." It's not like he's a Gears of War character, only able to emote in one way. (Manly grunts, natch.)

Soon as I got Liara and Garrus, I shelved him on the Normandy where he belongs.
