This means that, yes, he may not contribute to the advancement of the story. And yes, since he's a new character, he won't really be as interesting as characters like Garrus, Liara, or Tali that you've had two prior games to get to know and develop. However, James adds really valuable diversity to the ME3 cast, and not just because of his ethnicity. He's a solider, he has a more direct and less nuanced way of looking at the world, and that's great. It's different from the rest of the main cast and it makes for a richer, more believable setting.
Additionally, James' simplicity is probably why he's been picked for the anime. He hasn't seen the level of development that a lot of the other, more well-known characters have, so it's easier to create an original story for him.
Sorry Chris, but it really does sound like you just got a bad first impression and then brushed him off as another 'meathead'. Just because you didn't like him doesn't mean he's useless or not interesting.
Either way its not like Funimation isn't suited for it, you've got to figure after so many years they'd pick up a thing of two, specially in the dubbing and editing departments. Really, they probably see it as another avenue of profit, considering Funimation seems to be often threatened with Bankruptcy.
Also, I think both companies are in Texas, so its like the deal is only being floated right down the street.
to like meatheads, Marcus Fenix & co. Are deep & meaningful characters? Or does this work only cause it's Mass Effect?
I mean we've had alot longer to get to know Marcus Fenix/Dominc Santiago but does that not count cause it's Gears Of War? ;P
In all seriousness, my Shepard is a male soldier. He'd probably be too similar to Vega so I'm probably gonna shelve him quick, there's only room for one meathead on my ship and I'll be damned if it ain't me!
God forbid anybody in this world be fit. Why can't everybody have as much muscle atrophy as I do?
But really Tali, Jack, Samara and Grunt are the only really well-written characters in any of the three games. Even then Jack's the only significantly deep, notable character.
Not enough to put him on my team, but he could've been much worse
I hardly use him, but I find him strangely amusing.
Especially when he talks to Javik.
Also the way he sorta flirts with the other guy in the hangar. What's his name? Cortez?
But if there was going to be a Mass Effect Anime, it should obviously be about Jack. I mean, c'mon. She's practically made for it.
You dug Cortez? Huh. I can't say that I did, honestly. The whole tortured soul thing got a bit old, I thought, and it made me feel like a total dick when he's all "I R teh sad, my husband just died" and then you're all "it's cool bro, come rebound with the Shep-man." That... I dunno.
Also, don't hassle Vega. Kaidan's been busy being the worst character for three whole games now. Give him credit where it's due.
i was so utterly disgusted by this lame lameness that i even passed on the extra paragon or whatever bonding points there were, telling him to stfu
blech.

For all intents and purposes, my Shepard (most Shepards for that matter) is an Alpha Male - I'm fine with him. Wrex is the epitome of alpha male - also fine.
Yeah, this is sounding dangerously like Halo Legends already. Will skip. Already had my share of crap video game anime tie-ins (Persona 4, I'm talking about you).
anyway, good going Destructoid keep adding to the Mass Effect bandwagon, cus you know pageviews.
His story actually isn't as terrible as his design implies, but god do they play his stereotypes so hard.
Believe me, I talked to him. I talk to every single one of my party members before every mission, and he didn't add shit. Soon as I got Liara and Garrus, I shelved him on the Normandy where he belongs. No way in hell am I bringing someone that boring with me on my mission to save the galaxy when I could be doing it with my bro Garrus.
I'm just waiting for new crew members...
That's Javik.
