I haven't finished the story, so I don't know how much James plays into it. So far though, he's been a pretty important character for me in actual fights.
Vega was at least worth his shit talking with Garrus and his self-depriciating humor.
I still didn't use him much, though. Maybe once after Mars. It was more important for me to have EDI for every mission because she was hot and interesting.
As far as combat goes, he's one hell of a tank -- I don't believe I have ever had him go down in combat. As MuddBstrd mentioned, he can be an excellent addition to a party lead by an infiltrator. Garrus would be highly inadequate compared to my rifle - I only ever need one shot.
@Fugly *spoiler I guess* and thus the total lack of remorse I felt after offing Kaiden in 1.
I didn't mind Vega. Not even in my top 10 favorite characters from the series, but he wasn't THAT bad.
Jesus dude... there are worse characters.
Doesn't matter, I'll be rolling with my lady's Tali and Liara. Then again, I'm so strong at this point I one man army it as vanguard. My Charge or shotgun one hits anything under boss level.
^ This. Perfect combination of tech and biotic utility abilities to cover pretty much anything you could possibly need squadmates for. Sure they don't do a lot of weapon damage but my Inquisitor didn't need them to.
Way more than the whiny douche, Kaidan. Him and Jacob are really shallow characters where I don't really know what drives them.
And @Chris Carter:
LOLOL BIAS!!11
I don't know, I actually liked James. I thought I'd hate him before the game came out, but he turned out to be a pretty cool guy in the end. Now, if this anime was about Diana Allers...
Also, he crashes ships into shits and doesn't give a ship!
Poor Jessica Chobot. That had to be some of the worst voice acting in a video game I've heard in a long time.
Poor Chobot? Poor us! We paid money to sit through that character. She at least got paid (presumably) for doing it.
It's not like I didn't go down to the Cargo hold at Deck 5 of the Normandy to talk to Vega - I did. He just wasn't interesting and didn't contribute anything to the overall narrative.
There are characters like Liara and Tali that contribute regardless of whether or not you use them -- James? Well, you're kind of just forced to take him for the first few missions. Unlike the DLC character, he offers no insight as well.
Screw the haters, Vega owns, hopefully Freedie Prinze reprises his role.
