I know he looks and comes off as your typical meathead but I thought his story was somewhat interesting. It was a refreshing surprise after I took an avid interest in him and didn't just write him off as some steroid monkey. I suggest you do the same, Mr. Carter.
James' utility really depends on your own build. As an Infiltrator, I actually get a lot of mileage out of James; his abilities are really handy when taking down large foes.
I haven't finished the story, so I don't know how much James plays into it. So far though, he's been a pretty important character for me in actual fights.

Vega might be the worst character, but at least he has enough personality to qualify as a character, which is more than I can say for Jacob or Kaiden.
Its a shame that the series' first Chicano character gets tossed in at the final stretch of the trilogy. Vega's got potential, but when you've grown familiar with so many other wonderful characters whose story arcs you've been following for 60 + hours combined, new characters are going to get the shaft.
Vega wasn't the most worthless character. He certainly was among the least interesting, but Diana Allers earns the "most worthless and ugliest" character title.

Yeah... he's easy to dismiss as a useless meat head, but he actually does have a story and it's not bad. The fact that you haven't talked to him personally doesn't take away from him story, it merely takes away from your credibility. "I didn't talk to him, so he must suck."
As far as combat goes, he's one hell of a tank -- I don't believe I have ever had him go down in combat. As MuddBstrd mentioned, he can be an excellent addition to a party lead by an infiltrator. Garrus would be highly inadequate compared to my rifle - I only ever need one shot.

I tried to find out more but after the scene why Shepard and Vega rub their forearms on each other as they have a conversation (maybe they were sparring or something I don't know either way it was awkward) I had a hard time wanting to pursue him any further. Also nicknaming the Shepard "Loco" was pretty cringe worthy.

He has more personality if you're playing a FemShep. Some of his come-on lines are really funny, and he calls her "Lola" instead of "Loco" which is a MUCH better nickname.

I've had him on for every mission involving a returning enemy (trying hard not to spoil anything but if I did, sorry). He's got some great powers that I've been using on them.

I mean, I can see why some people will hate him, because he doesn't have much background and he's only introduced into the final game, thus not much personal history... but most "worthless meathead of all time".... ? Okay. While he may come off as that by appearance, he actually becomes quite personal during the game and it starts to be obvious why he puts on such a front.

That being said, I'd much rather watch a conversation with Vega and Loco than watch *any* anime. Especially anime that's a derivative of other content.. Just sayin...
I agree with Trist. I can't speak for his personality when you're male Shepard, but he's not a stereotypical meathead when you play as femShep. Remember never judge a book by it's cover and all that jazz.
Vega's okay. He represents a grunty underclass that hasn't had much of a voice in the series so far. It's like getting to know a Goomba in a Mario RPG.
I think Vega's pretty cool. He just tries to alpha male it up when you're playing MaleShep, which can turn people off.

^ This. Perfect combination of tech and biotic utility abilities to cover pretty much anything you could possibly need squadmates for. Sure they don't do a lot of weapon damage but my Inquisitor didn't need them to.

Aw he wasn't that bad. Start going through the optional dialog for the guy and he's a pretty stand up dude. Granted, as bulky as he is I'm not sure he can sit down at all.
He is a meathead but at least that’s something, I found him much more likeable than Kaiden or Jacob.
James is a great character. Whether you find him likeable is down to your own taste. I do, but that's just me. The fact is, he's memorable, has real human development and scenes, and is one of the better characters to me. The whole brash meathead thing is how he comes off and how he starts, but thats his persona. His guard against his own insecurities and bad memories. He's a shitload deeper than 95% of videogame characters. So once again I find myself thinking that Chris Carter is a bit of a pleb.
I must admit ignoring the design Vega is great, Freddie prinze Jr really knocked the Voice Acting out of the park he did such a great job his conversations with Garrus over who is most badass is amusing.
@Tristrix - Agreed. Lola actually sounds like a nickname someone would give someone in a positive, playfully friendly and off hand manner, and they have a great interaction. But then again, I came to the conclusion long ago that Mass Effect as a whole is so much more interesting if Shepard is a woman.
He's not amazing or anything, but he's far from the worst. Even if you don't like using him in your squad, Carnage as an extra skill is a heckuva lot of fun. Plus his argument with Garrus is one of the best scenes in ME3.

I know but damn. I really kinda felt bad for her. I mean, I get the impression that she does genuinely like video games, and I imagine it was really exciting for her to be in one, especially one so high profile, and I get the impression that she really did TRY to do a good job. She just... didn't. :(
I don't understand why a person wouldn't talk to every crew member they had, whether they bring them on missions or not. The back stories are always at least a little interesting, and always seems to shed light on a different corner of the ME universe
I went into ME3 thinking Vega would be lame and came out of it thinking he was an alright guy. I think he is about as interesting as Jacob/Kaiden/Ashley.

There are characters like Liara and Tali that contribute regardless of whether or not you use them -- James? Well, you're kind of just forced to take him for the first few missions. Unlike the DLC character, he offers no insight as well.

Sounds a little more than judgmental on your part. He's a soldier, they are typically fairly fit. Either way, if you actually bothered to talk to him he's actually an alright character and has more depth than most of the characters who've stayed the entire series.
Poor Vega, the way he looks is the sole reason he's so disliked, either that or racism since he's latino.
