@Necron117: The story of generic military guy number 64589 is very compelling. /sarcasm
Actually I'm being a unfair as some of the side characters are pretty interesting.
But you can talk to a lizard man and have him tell you stories about his people, his personal wars, and he says shepperd in a funny way when you stop talking to him. The little moments like that, or when you first vaporize a guy to green or red cinders as you blast them with a weapon. For me, it was the big moments where I got to choose who lived or died that seemed to be worth a god damn, especially the way it carried those decisions forward to the second game.
I'm in, but cautiously in, for Mass Effect 3.
That little girl in the trailer was the uncanniest valley I've seen lately. And god damn these valleys are springing up everywhere.
FUCKING THANK YOU. I'm sick and tired of people trying to pass this show off as some cornerstone in story telling. The characters are all so one dimensional that it becomes painfully obvious what they're going to do and/or what they're thinking. I don't care if anyone reading this like the show. It's your opinion. Fine. Just don't try to pass this off as a show that deserves to go down in TV history or anything like that.
@Holmes
Whatever homey. Fuck the haters, I still got love for ya.
If you haven't started yet, with all the mass advertising with 1 and 2, you probably won't start now. IMO either you like the series or you don't at this point.
As for Walking Dead...enh. Half of the actors are fine (Shane, Rick), half are terrible. Half of the plotlines are fine, half are terrible (Sophia's 8 episode arc). It's...alright. I watch it because my wife likes zombie media, and it's tolerable.
What annoys me, Is that you use a simple commercial that's going to be little more then an attract screen when the game comes out to try and make a point about something that wasn't even really the point. Most people, if not all people (unless they actually WATCH Walking Dead) would see the whole `We're going to be showing a ME3 commercial during Walking Dead!` as `There'll be a new ME3 trailer online about 30 seconds after they show it on air, if you're not into the show, watch it here instead.` I highly doubt that there was any real ulterior motive beyond -- `Let's get people excited for ME3.` Honestly, It's the same kind of commercial that Gears has used for every single game starting from `Mad World` to `How it Ends` and finally `Into Dust`. It's just a cool little CG trailer to frame the story. No big deal.
If feels like you've just started to run with the whole Anthony Burch schtick of `It's popular so it sucks.` a lot more lately then you used to.
"It looks another lasers, glowing robots, imitation Star Wars spaceships, being in a war, shooting at the things that don't look like people game"
I gotta say yer wifey pretty much hit the nail on da head. Bioware must be rubbing the last two creative thoughts they have together pretty damn hard right about now. Big purple phalluses scorching the earth? Take it back? MORE LIKE FINISH THE FIGHT!

Well then she wouldn't like the game anyway, regardless of trailer. This just sounds like something my own significant other would say and I'd just roll my eyes at. That describes about 45% of modern video games in one way or another.
It's okay man, my girlfriend doesn't game either. It's okay. Hold me.
Holmes, could you list her top 10 like/dislikes, so I can also mirror her other personal tastes? Or you can save me time and tell me her Dtoid user name and I will subscribe to her posts.
Thanks!
(WTF? is more like it ;p)
In any case, I look forward to stabbing husks in the face with the new omnitool blade. I hate those things.
"If EA wanted to make a Mass Effect 3 trailer that would appeal to The Walking Dead's audience, I figure they should have shown off more of the inter-party drama and angst-ridden moral dilemmas, and less of the "videogame-y" looking stuff."
Firstly, a trailer isn't tailor-made to suit the media vehicle that's in the time-slot.... That would not be cost effective in any way. How could they broadcast that same "moody, character-driven" trailer on Spike? ESPN? It wouldn't go over well at all on those platforms. They did go out of their way to add emotional depth with the little girl in the sunflower fields, which was a nice way to tug at the heart-strings just a little. At the end of the day, they created a commercial that best represented what the game was about to their target demographic.
Which leads me to my second point: The Walking Dead was selected by EA because, within their target demographic, it accurately fit their requirements of Reach and Exposure - two critical elements to any advertising campaign. And yes, ME3 and TWD have the same target demographic. TWD, while moving at a slow-pace, appeals to the same general audience who are likely to play ME3. It's "character-study" narrative does nothing to change that. There is absolutely no reason to feel like its the intellectual superior to anything "videogame-y". Really??
Considering the person I watched the show with is going out today to pick up ME1 and start the series before 3 releases and that at least two other people on my FB decided to do the same thing (though one already played ME1 and decided to pick up ME2) not to mention how many people on my FB page were talking about the trailer I'd say it seems pretty successful.
I think their aim was exposure to a lot of people that prolly play games. They understand that people can like multiple genres and have multiple interests. I like your stuff a lot but you seem to only like nintendo and niche and you talk down about people who like otherwise; you have to understand that some people like multiple genres of games and you shouldn't belittle people who also like action and story in their games.
Be open minded...
If I asked someone who knew nothing about games “what are videogames like?” they would describe that trailer, and that’s the problem, because we all want people to see that games have moved on in the past two decades.
So far it's worked. At last count, Mass Effect 2 sold better than Mass Effect 2, and I'm sure the same will be true of Mass Eefect 3. The're doing it right. I'm just not sure that this trailer was the right move to keep things going in that direction.
@ Everyone saying I hate Mass Effect because it's popular-
Then why do I love Mario and Zelda and Resident Evil so much? Maybe you guys choose what games to like based on how it will reflect on your image, but I certainly don't.
Overall, you guys sound pretty over sensitive, like you're trying to find a way to be offended by this post. Is it because your generally offended that I've said before that I don't like Mass Effect? It's not like I post about the game a lot (I think this is the first post I've ever written about Mass Effect 3). Are you that fragile in your self confidence that it's "cool" to like this game that one relative neutral post about it has your claws out?
If you read the post (instead of overly read into it) all it says is "I'm not so sure that this trailer was effective at marketing this game." I was hoping the trailer is doing what it's supposed to do that well. That's all. No need to play the victim here, everybody. No need to get all bent out of shape over an opinion or two that does not exactly mirror your own.
Uninteresting trailer or not, I'm going to try Mass Effect 3 just as I did the first two games, with hopes that Bioware's efforts to win over actually work this time. They are a very talented group of developers, so I think it's possible. If they get the action bits down the a RE4-like level of mastery, I'll be all over it.
With that in mind though, I think the idea of focusing on plot in a 1:30 trailer would be both difficult and counter productive to the series as advertising. If you try and tell somebody the plot of mass effect you'd have to explain a huge amount before you could even get to the meat of the matter.
As for the commercial, I think its intention was to show that in this third installment the humans are being attacked on their own soil, not the mechanics of the game. TOR's commercial was a complete cinematic that showed none of the gameplay as well....tons of video games are marketed this way.
Also, everything Tristrix said. You aren't going to have a trailer for Phantom Menace 3D and have it contain nothing but 3 minutes of Qui-Gon talking to Yoda. You're going to pack it with space battles and Darth Maul.
Also, you shouldn't have written this. Let another writer with actual interest in Mass Effect write something on the trailer. Then you put your opinions in the form of a comment rather than a news post.
I'll be honest, I thought Holmes mrs' quote was so uninformed and ridiculous it was completely made up by Holmes to write a pointless article. But then Randombullseye said the same damn thing.
As for the trailer itself, I'd have personally had more aliens in the trailer, but trailers are trailers, they rarely show off any nuance something may(or may not) have and Tristrix nailed it.
"No. It's Mass Effect." :-D
As I explained the Reapers to her she got all frowny-faced and said, "F that game! They killed that little girl!"
My girlfriend and I watched the trailer during the episode, and she said this: "I wish I was more into video games because that seems to be a lot more profound and exciting than I expected." verbatim now of course I shot her down when I explained the basic gameplay elements and showed her some brief gameplay from the first and second. But it was good to see her taking an interest in something I adore so much. She loved Bioshock 1&2 mind you, but it takes a lot less chatty gameplay for her to endure the game.
If I could just nit pick for a second Holmes I do highly doubt your significant other said this: "It looks another lasers" I didn't see it pointed out sorry sometimes typos from quotations bother me. It is interesting to see another take on the trailer though.
oh wait this about ME3....no I'm confused
Instead of showing off how badass of an action movie we're going to be playing it instead goes for the other major part of the game and tries to show just a tiny bit of the moral decisions we'll be making and how our party is going to react. Way better trailer in every way.
There is a reason that EA's massive advertising team chose 'The Walking Dead' to have their trailer play....Because its a pretty sure bet that 9/10 people that like things involving zombies...play video games of some sort. Also...a highly rated popular show which alot of people tend to watch can be a good place to sell your product.
Its kinda like advertising 101...DUH.
And...just to be completely crazy...I'm pretty sure action packed trailers are effective in making franchises popular in videogames and movies (I'll just throw out LOTR, ALIENS, STAR TREK, FINAL FANTASY and GRAND THEFT AUTO as examples).
I like your stuff in general, Holmes, but its become glaringly obvious the way you take a shot at games like this. It's pathetic.
The problem like others are pointing out, is your passive-aggressive, HIIMMRNICEGUY and trying so very hard to be "the most lovable Associate Editor on Destructoid" and the shtick is really becoming forced and boring. Your excuses and justifications against anything that doesn't seem to be the Bit Trip Runner games or whatever, or Nintendo is OLD now.
Long winded posts about why moving and shooting doesn't work in Resident Evil to justify your claims. Saying you've hated the Sonic the Hedgehog formula of running right before reviewing a Sonic game harking back to its classic formula. Some feminist rhetoric bullshit in regards to Bayonetta or whatever. And suggesting points are taken off Skyward Sword because fans might not like the control scheme or whatever.
It's quite often like you don't have a point to make, or you have a very poor one and then wrap tons of LOLHI IM CUDDLY HOLMES or strange justifications around it. I mean that article where you hate on Nathan Drake because you were a bit of a loser in school? And then saying the mod skin that makes him fat Donut Drake makes him a much better character?
It's like you're seeking some kind of therapy and inner exploration in everything you write, like there's a supposed devil on your shoulder telling you to be irrational or speak your mind and the angel on the other is letting you know you're pretty worthless so you might as well throw in the gimmick of being animated and 'nice'.
Jim recently put up an article that people attack en masse about stuff, but come on. Most of your readership and commentors saw this and most of your stuff as a bit thick, you don't have to change your (strange) personality for anyone, but as you're writing for them you should take on board what they're saying. No matter how much like assholes we seem.
But you know, I'm only saying this because I love you, and you're really nice and cool and i want to rub your cute little bald head and rock you to sleep whilst singing lullabys because I'm not so familiar with stuff but I can appreciate what you're trying to say here and you're probably right and you're opinion is valid and of value!
