You see now I really feel like I'm living in Bizarro world. Dragon Age 2 is the first Bioware game I really liked.
Putting Gabe in the same sentence with Kotick is ridiculous. You're an idiot.
It helps that Valve has a lot more goodwill with gamers than EA, especially given that before Steam, PC Gamers didn't have many options. It also helps that Steam constantly has sales. But primarily, it's because Steam was pretty much first.
Origin is basically a me-too by EA. I'm not saying they're unjustified in trying, but... Yeah.
I just checked Origins.
The digital deluxe edition is listed for $79.99 there. That image is actually a nice bit of (evil) misdirection. $59.99 gets you the basic edition of Mass Effect 3 for digital download, hence why it says "starting from" in hard to see white writing next to the bolded, orange "59.99".
Check it out.
I understand how you feel EXACTLY. That's how I feel about the Uncharted series and about Red Dead Redemption. They're big pretty games that are boring as fuck but somehow the hype for them is just infectious. Even after I knew I didn't RDR I still found myself trying to play through Undead Nightmares.
That said, I quite like the Mass Effect series but I totally see where you're coming from. God damn hype.
If you don't like the service then don't use it, it's as simple as that, but telling companies to fuck off over this is just plain childish.
Hey, I'm not disagreeing. I don't game much on PC either way, but you made note of the discrepency, and I offered a few potential reasons. Valve does a lot to engender good will with gamers, while EA (and specifically Bobby Kotick) do a lot to garner ill will.
I'm not siding with either one here, I play most of my games on Xbox 360 anyway.
While I agree with you that creating online accounts sucks and increases the possibilty of getting hacked, its still worth remembering that Valve has done exactly the same thing with HL2.
In all honesty I will buy from whoever gives me the best deal and with non indies that is boxed retail / amazon. Steam is way overpriced for UK gamers with the publishers setting the price to keep retail competative (thats why allot more ppl buy retail in europe than the US). If the publishers make their own stores IM HOPING that digital download will be as good a deal as what those across the pond are getting atm
They better, because I want a robot dog, and I want this game on steam.
Besides, didn't EA make the point about Origin vs Steam, saying steam takes a 20%+ margin on games? IF EA is distributing it's own game on it's own platform they are making big profits. Why not market the game at a 10% discount to show origin's worth vs steam? What a bunch of money grabbing punks!
When it comes to collector's editions, the only games that would actually risk becoming collector's items are too small time to afford to make multiple editions of. Meanwhile I can walk into my local best buy and still see a huge stack of massive Halo Reach and Assassins Creed Brotherhood limited editions. If I look hard enough they probably still have some halo 3 helmets lying around.
The art book is for the "N7" packaged version.
You let Tali die? -_-
You better go back and fix that son or else me and the whole Quarian nation gonna lay down the hurt. (Seriously, how can you not love Tali? :( )
Robotic dog sounds stupid, and the other 2 items should be free DLC post-launch. EA can keep their Origin shit. Steam and retail all the way!
Journalism.
Are you really going to believe EA, a company known for ass-fucking its customers -- especially on PC, over Valve, a company known for always delivering quality games with true value for money and free DLC while offering criminally low prices during seasonal sales? No other game company has a problem with Valve or Steam; indie devs seem to love it and even Gearbox has started using it for DRM despite Randy Pitchford's criticisms before Borderlands' launch. Until I see proof otherwise, I'm marking this down as corporate greed on EA's part.
been playing Mass Effect 2 this summer, amazing game will probably buy the ME3 on PS3 :P
oh well what can you do :P
Not bothered by it though, EA's gotta promote their new gaming space somehow. Either way, I'll be getting it on the 360 to sit with the other two games.
And EpicKx, I let my whole party live, but I wouldn't have cried, had Tali died, and that ain't no lie, now Imma eat some pie.
Nah man, you are not the only one. I do that too. I feel like Digital downloads are a little bit of a ripoff. They should be priced less than physical copies considering that they don't require any manufacturing.
I will probably do what I did with ME2: wait for the GOTY edition. 80 bucks is just too much money for a videogame.
Exactly what ass fucking is there? Day 1 DLC? Oh god no! I don't get five minutes of extra content because I'm not horrendously idiotic and don't buy it.
Valve's free DLC is wonderful, don't get me wrong, but there's no way an extra map for TF2 is of anywhere near the same value as Lair of the Shadow Broker was.
Indie devs love steam because sadly they're indie devs and not businessmen. Every time I see a 50% off sale within a month of release on Steam I cringe a little.
EA have done nothing wrong here and did nothing wrong by launching Origin. And I will unfortunately get more and more annoyed by people constantly shitting on it without knowing the facts behind why we even got to this situation to begin with.
And I'll keep shitting on Origin until EA actually gives me a compelling reason to use their service. If they are saving a ton of money on distribution then they can bloody well pass on some added value to me the consumer. Otherwise they can fuck right off.
And indie devs love Steam because they make a ton of money there that they couldn't anywhere else. Those 50% off sales lead to many purchases and a lot of word of mouth advertising.
<3 Froggie.
EA was one of the first companies to use the limited install SecuROM crap and likes charging $60 for games on a platform where one of the advantages has always been cheaper products. Recently, they published Bulletstorm, which uses a unique form of Games For Windows Live that forces you to be connected to the internet to start the game. Every single time. There's also Dead Space 2 (and other games, I'm sure), where the PC version didn't get the single-player DLC pack for absolutely no reason.
Valve has released multiple free campaigns for both Left 4 Dead games, including conversions of L4D 1 levels for L4D 2. They are also huge supporters of the mod scene (when was the last time an EA game had mod tools?) and recently made Team Fortress 2 free to play. I agree that Lair of the Shadow Broker is more substantial than any of Valve's DLCs, but for every Lair of the Shadow Broker, there are five Witch Hunts, which are LESS substantial than Valve's DLCs, and still cost money.
EA has not done anything wrong by launching Origin. I never said they had. But certain things seem dubious here. EA used to be Valve's retail publisher until Portal 2 came out. Now EA doesn't want some of their games (or certain content for them) on Steam, and no other mega-publisher (not even Activision) seems to have a problem with the way Valve conducts business using Steam. It may be a coincidence (it probably is), but I find it weird. I feel like there's more to this than just one company not agreeing with another's contract.
