In what many be able to call a predictable move, Electronic Arts has announced its proprietary digital service Origin as the only place to download the enhanced version of Mass Effect 3. As boasted by the service itself, it will be the "Exclusive source for the PC Digital Deluxe Download ."
So far it seems that only the Deluxe Edition will be exclusive, as perhaps not even EA is stupid enough to restrict the game entirely to its silly little Internet Shoppe.
Those ordering from Origin will receive three in-game items -- the N7 Arsenal Pack, the Robotic Dog and the Squadmate Alternate Outfit Pack. The digital deluxe version costs $79.99, which frankly sounds like way too much for a download that just has three extra pieces of content in it.
Isn't it great how Electronic Arts is trying to ignite the giddy fun of the console wars on the PC market without bringing anything competitive to the table? Oh wait, that's not really great at all.
Mass Effect 3 [Origin, thanks Daniel]

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Whatever, I'm buying it on 360 anyway.
(Oh btw, I let Tali die)
When I say competitive, I mean "make an offer over and above what others can do" rather than "just take our shit away from everybody else." If EA could offer something incredible at a great price, I'd be more inclined to give Origin a chance.
The fact EA wants to just have its own platform without doing much of anything to make it worth a shit is my biggest issue. I don't just want an EA-flavored Steam. I'm sick of publishers wanting me to make special little accounts for them, so if they can't offer anything of real worth, they can fuck off.
Well said Jim. They sure can fuck off.
I'm getting it on 360 anyway, but I'd like to have a robot dog. :( Sounds cute.
Point taken.
This? This is lame.
Actually I don't care.
Let's face it: EA might love Origin, but they love money more. An extra comic and art booklet costs only $1-$2 to print in mass quantities (if that) and allows them to make an extra $3-$5 in profit per unit.
Stretched across a few hundred thousand units, and it's worth the effort.
I bet EA has some tricks up their sleeve for this...
Point is this: your "regular version" will probably have a hidden cost of $10 to get online features in a disturbing trend of making people pay to get online with their games while featuring no real benefit to doing so other than the possibility of playing said game online.
My personal verdict: Steam buy or bargain bin years after its a relevant title...
Fuck yeah, used PC sale here.
A lot of people do, sadly.
I thought the average age of gamers now was 25-30 years old. Grow up drama queens.
You're wondering how a well-written, well-produced, well-executed game with the full weight of first Microsoft's, then EA's marketing has managed to sell more than 10 copies?
Your opinion =/= facts. Just like I don't see the appeal for Madden '11, you don't see the appeal of Mass Effect. However that does not change the fact that the games both have a lot of things going for them which do appeal to millions.
Why? Convenience and price.
Attempt to beat the above and I'll buy from you. Currently, you're not *quite* there. (In fact you're nowhere near)
Me too!
Wait why am I even posting he-
Oh yeah, I was going to shit all over Origin and price-gouging. Almost forgot for a second there.
Nobody cares.
I will do as I did with ME 2. I will wait until it is 15/20 bucks andc I will "suggest" my sister to buy it for my birthday.
Seriously. If they think they can compete with those prices, they are not going to get any of my money.
