Mass Effect 3 delayed until Q1 2012 photo

Mass Effect 2's Facebook page has an announcement stating a new release date for the game: "in the first three months of 2012."

"The development team is laser focused on making sure Mass Effect 3 is the biggest, boldest and best game in the series, ensuring that it exceeds everyone’s expectations," says executive producer Casey Hudson.

Worse news for us than the Genophage was for the Krogan, to be sure. What are we going to play now? Skyrim?

[Thanks, DW and Paul!]

Well, at least I have time with Skyrim now, but I'm still saddened.

What I hate most is the fact that they give us a release date and when we get closer to it they just say they cannot deliver it. I hope they use this time to make the game better, not because they fear confrontation with another titles.

Theres still a bunch of great stuff coming this holiday (some we dont even know about *E3*) but this sucks. ME3 along with uncharted were the two i was looking forward to the most.

Didn't care anyway. Bioware probably learned some lessons from Dragon Age 2 and are trying not to release shit this time.

Well, I'm sure that time will be spent improving the game even further. Skyrim has now been bumped up to my #1 most anticipated. Don't let me down Bethesda.

I'm prepared to wait as long as need be for the GOF.

they could delay it a year for all i care, as long as it ends up being a better game.

can't wait!

@Beccy: GOF?

I can live with the delay, gives me more time for my Epic 100% completion run through of ME 1 & 2.

This is one of those unsurprising delays. They only put out ME2 last year and put out a PS3 port a couple months ago. Makes sense and not unexpected.

I'm actually taking this as a good sign. Maybe they are reacting to the criticism of Dragon Age 2 being slapped together and rushed out the door. I just hope this game kicks butt, whenever it comes out.

Am I the only one here that's happy to hear this news? I love the Mass Effect games but I don't mind a little delay for the last installment because it'll give me time to catch up on my huge backlog of games! Moreover, RPG fans still have games like Elder Scrolls V, Dues Ex: human revolution, and the upcoming Witcher 2 to look forward to.

I'm sad and happy about this. Sad that I can't play ME3 sooner, but happy that they are taking the time to actually finish it and make it the best game it can be.

It's bioware, they probably want the time to make more "day one DLC", exclusive preorder pack ins available only if you preorder 6 months out but not available 4 months out, and more greedy shit moves. I love Mass Effect, but lately bioware is losing more and more good name with me.

This is awesome news. Q4 is already packed to the gills, we don't need to cram an half-baked ME3 in there too.

Just played Lair of the Shadow Broker for the first time on my 2nd ME2 playthrough...ugh, Liara. I wanna give her blue babies so bad. I won't even bone Jack or Tali on this playthrough, just in case my abstinence pays dividends in ME3.

I assumed this when they released the release date. EA don't like anything otter than FPS and driving games in that holiday window.

Fucking called it. Anyone who expected this to hit this quarter is pretty damn optimistic. No way it was gonna happen. It's already May.

This means I can focus on Arkham City though. What, did you think I was gonna say Skyrim? Pffft. Dat Elder Scrolls shit? Gurl, please.

This is not bad news. They MUST make ME3 better than ME2, and that will not be an easy feat to accomplish. Give them all the extra time they need.

I think it's a good move. Bethesda/EA are some of the only companies consistently moving toward spacing out their big releases even if it means missing the holiday crush period (ME2, Dead Space 2).

While I would have loved to play ME3 earlier, I'll likely add it to my backlog and pick it up when it's cheap. One good thing about waiting to grab ME2 when it hit $30 at Best Buy was that it coincided with DLC price drops on Live. Paid for and played all the content (except for the most recent one) for less than $50. Can't argue with that.

Good! Best news I've heard about it yet.

More time in the oven is just what the doctor ordered after the debacle of Dragon Age 2, which according to many, was shit out in 12 months.

Yes, more time to fine-tune the game is definitely a good thing here, given the Mass Effect pedigree. Also, first quarter is usually pretty dead, so it's a good release window. Plenty of other good games in Q4, so the wait shouldn't be too agonizing.

Damnit, that was supposed to be Darth Vader screaming: NOOOOOO!

In all honesty, though, Q1 would essentially be a two-year development cycle from Mass Effect 2 to Mass Effect 3, so it is still coming out in standard time. I will gladly wait for ME3 to be as great of an experience as it can be.

I doubt very highly that this has anything but sales at its crux. I am sure they could release a top-quality game this year, but they stand to benefit hugely from releasing next year at a time when there are not AT LEAST 5 or 6 AAA titles releasing across all platforms like at the end of this year to compete with.

I don't mind. It just means I will actually purchase this on release instead of waiting a few months anyway. So for me this makes practically no difference at all.

Good. Perhaps this is a sign that they are actually learning from the mistakes made with the rush-job that is Dragon Age II.
