Mass Effect 2 sells 2 million copies in first week photo

Sounds like EA has a lot to be happy about, according to this press release they've sent out today. Two million copies of Mass Effect 2 have been sold in the first week of release, which is nothing to shake a stick at. In addition, they make a point to mention the forty perfect scores given by review outlets and the average score of 96, making it the second highest-reviewed game on the 360.

And then they call themselves a "pop culture phenomenon."

Okay, look, I understand a desire to pimp your product but that label is going a bit far, don't you think? Fact is, more people will recognize the jack-off in the header image than Shepard. You make your zombified protagonist bigger than a dude who whines on the internet and we'll talk.

In the meantime, I hear the game is pretty damn good but I still haven't finished the first Mass Effect due to the host of niggling irritations and an abundance of better things to do with my time. Maybe this weekend.

If you want to read the full press release, it is posted after this link thingy here.

BIOWARE'S MASS EFFECT 2 HAILED AS 1st BLOCKBUSTER OF 2010
Game Earns Rave Reviews, Sells 2Million Units in Week One
Guildford, UK (January 29, 2010) – Forty perfect scores. Two million units. One pop culture phenomenon. BioWare™, a division of Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS), announced today that Mass Effect™ 2 has sold-in over two million units worldwide in its first week of release*. Lauded for its intense shooter gameplay and deep, hand-crafted story, Mass Effect 2 has earned an average review score of 96** — making it the second highest rated game of all time on the Xbox 360 platform***. Mass Effect 2 has earned 40 perfect scores, amassed over 30 editor’s choice awards and is donning the front cover of 20 magazines worldwide. On launch day, the term “Mass Effect” was in the top 10 trending topics on Twitter and most searched on Google News. MSNBC.com said, “Mass Effect will go down as one of the most influential video game series of all-time."

Dr. Ray Muzyka, co-founder, BioWare and Group General Manager of the RPG/MMO Group of EA said, “Mass Effect 2 is poised to be one of the biggest games of 2010. We could not be more proud of the game’s universal acclaim and early commercial success.”

Mass Effect 2 launched this week hot on the heels of BioWare’s Dragon Age: Origins, the studio’s dark fantasy RPG which shipped in fall 2009. Dragon Age: Origins has earned an average review score of 91****, making it the highest rated original intellectual property from EA in the last year. Mass Effect 2 follows in BioWare’s tradition of delivering excellence on every front: gameplay, story, character development and visuals. Mass Effect 2 is an epic shooter/RPG set in a vast universe filled with dangerous alien life and mysterious, uncharted planets. In Mass Effect 2, players step into the role of the heroic Commander Shepard, leading a crew of some of the most dangerous operatives from across the galaxy on a mission so challenging that it’s potentially suicidal. Featuring intense action, a rich storyline, space exploration and engaging character interaction, Mass Effect 2 delivers an unparalleled gaming experience.

Mass Effect 2 is available for the Xbox 360 and the PC and is 15 by the BBFC. For more information, follow the development team on Twitter athttp://twitter.com/masseffect2 or visit the game’s official UK website at http://getmasseffect.ea.com.

This is a pop culture phenomenon:

Mass Effect 2 looks to be brilliant but is still only a video game.

Games good. This is the first game in a very very long time that I have actually woken up early to play an hour of before going to work. I'll stay up late for fucking PuzzleQuest. But it takes a special game to get me up early.

If you have to say your game is a pop culture phenmenon, then its not.Its kinda like people on Live telling you they're drunk or stoned. They're not in either state, its just called being a moron.

I just hope ea make some good money from this. I'm afraid the losses and layoffs will make ea scared to make new games, and encourage them to copy activision, which is ironically like the old ea.

I played it for what I can only assume was 6 straight hours last night/this morning. I had to force myself to stop.

I'm sure the game is phenomenal, and I really wish I could play it, but Bioware is sooooo overrated (I think).

It IS a very good game, but you can't just declare yourself phenom status. Its like telling people you're cool.

For once I think a record selling title totally deserved it.

10/10 from Destructoid deserved.

Now will we forget about it when December rolls around?

@rsquad
I don't think they're blowing down any doors but ME2 is certainly a testament to how good they can be. I certainly can't think of many Western devs in their tier.

My only worry is that people are going to forget about it by December. Look at all the games that came out in early 2008 and 2009 that weren't even considered for GOTY.

I'm proud to be one of those 2 million, and I'm enjoying the hell out of my first playthrough. I can't help but miss some aspects of the first one that were changed, though.

how come if i die and press resume it starts me at saves from 5 missions ago??? fairly annoying. the thing been out for like a week. if it's such a "pop culture phenomenon" then why don't i hear any references to it in POP CULTURE? no one outside of the video game community has any idea what mass effect is. thats not too popular.

Great sales for a great game.
However I'm curious about something.
Is the 2M sales shared between 360/PC or is it only 360?
Either way great game from Bioware.
Gonna pick up this game later in the year for PC when I get the money.

I have to give the 360 credit where its due. When a big games is released, it sells WELL.

The PS3, I honestly have to scratch my head at times. Something like Uncharted 2 is released and its just lucky to get 2 million over the course of a few months. Put that thing as an exclusive on the 360 and that thing sells 2-3 million in its first week easily and likey 4 million in a year.

So while I despise MS and its hordes of followers, at LEAST they buy great games when they're released, even if they do go out and orgasm over Halo like it were a never ending waterfall of Ambrosia with beautiful women swimming in it.

I have to agree here. It's almost like 1st part PS3 developers don't like money. 360 crowd would eat up games like uncharted2 so much so that the charts would spin. It makes you wonder if Sony sponsoring exclusive deals is even in any stratosphere resembling "smart". It's like biting off their nose to spite their face. The key here is a 360 owner bought the machine to play games, a PS3 owner is an enigma.

Well, not to try to say "360 owners are kids" but assuming more adults own PS3 systems, and given the limited amount of time adults have to play games, it might explain the lower sales across certain games.

Let's just be honest. If you're in high school or lower, games and gaming can take up a LOT of time, especially if you have parents with deep enough pockets. So, cheaper system = more children = more people [more impressionable people for that matter] and you have more games sold.

Still, IDK, you'd think that PS3 owners would still clamor for certain titles.

*shrug*

Though, I guess I'm no better. I don't own Uncharted 1 or 2 since I only got my system on Black Friday and don't bring it to college [too much of a GOOD distraction from work...<__<] and there's just so little time and too many games.

@ mrsatan-

"The controls are so broken."

This statement makes me think you have never played a game with truly broken controls.

It's sad that everyone thinks that their statements have to be at one extreme or the other anymore. Oh, wait...what I meant to say was-

It's the WORST THING EVER that EVERYONE ON THE PLANET exaggerates ALL THE TIME. Every second of every day. It's worse than AIDS.

I think that's more in keeping with the spirit of subtlety found in any gaming discussion.

Also, I can't wait for the inevitable Mass Effect 2 backlash for no good reason other than people feel that others love it too damn much. It's always amusing when people respond to what they feel is excessive praise by attempting to somehow "level it out" with forced criticisms and excessive dislike of their own.

have not played it, i'm sure its good, but having millions of people on board isn't necessarily indicative of anything great. millions continue to buy b. spears' crap, countless monkeys voted for w. bush not once but twice and independence day was the highest grossing film of all time for quite a while...

Mass Effect 2 is not its predecessor. The story and characters do not have to make up for weak gameplay elements. Bioware managed to build a game to match the scope they were striving for, and that is a huge accomplishment.

It is GOTY material. Obviously, there will be other contenders, but I'm halfway through my first playthrough and I am continually awestruck at what Bioware has put together.

Eh, it's a press release. I used to write those things for a living. It's pretty standard to exaggerate in the first sentence, because most news outlets won't read past that unless you've hooked them to begin with. I think they're just trying to get any press that they can to build on top of their already-monumental success.
