Mass Effect 2 gets January 26 release date photo

Start working on your best Commander Shepard impressions -- BioWare has announced that Mass Effect 2 will be hitting North American shelves on January 26. Europe needs to hold tight for a few days; they'll see the game on January 29.

Additionally, a handful of pre-order "incentives" have been revealed. Pre-order from GameStop will get a code to download the "Terminus Gear" when the game is released. The pack includes "Terminus Armor," designed for "extreme planetary conditions," and increases run speed, personal shields, and awards an additional magazine of reserve ammo. You'll also get the crazy-sounding M-90 Blackstorm Heavy Weapon, which "generates a high-powered localized gravity well, accelerating particles near-infinite mass." Woah.

Pre-order the game at other participating retailers, and you'll get the "Inferno Armor," which will give Shepard a negotiations bonus in-game, as well as increase run speed and increases damage from combat powers.

So now you know the date, and now you know your pre-order choices. What's your plan?

WAT

son of a birch, the avalanche is starting early.

Well good thing it isn't too long after Christmas. I will put those gift cards/money to good use.

That terminus armor looks cool, but the negotiations bonus seems much more useful to me. Everything the terminus provides could easily be achieved through the armor mods.

Well shoot.

I think I want a negotiations bonus! How's that for a new monkey wrench in pre-order goodies?

Sounds good, I'm there. I don't really care about any of the pre-order crap. I know it's not game breaking if I don't get it, so that's good enough for me to not care. But i've been looking forward to the game itself.

Which reminds me, I need to hurry up and replay through Mass Effect 1 so I can have a save file.

So, what class does the armor fall in? Cause it looks awesome, but I'm worried my Light Armor rolling Adept won't be able to use it.

OH its so neat. Do the pre-order bonuses come on a little card with a code that they hand you when you buy the game? Or do they come inside the game. If they come on a little card they hand me I'm gonna pre-order at two places, buy them both, get the cards and then return one. I'll have both armors!!! MWUHAHAHAHAHA

I'm super pumped up now that there is a release date and its in January. I don't think I'll get any work done today because I'll be daydreaming of Shepard. He's so dreamy...*sigh*

There is no way I'll be done with Dragon Age before this comes out. I probably won't get to this until spring break. That's a shame, because Mass Effect is easily my favorite game this gen... possibly ever.

Thanks a bunch for incredible bonuses that I've no way to obtain...

Also, why the fuck are they talking about ammo? Didn't the original establish a pretty solid reason for not having to reload?
SuitcoatAvenger's Avatar - Comment posted on 10/16/2009 12:13

@kaspar; there's specialty ammo stuff in the new game, apparently ('flame' shots, etc). Standard ammo is still infinite, but the overheat bar has been removed. You have to manually reload now.

I just thought of something. This is seriously stupid. Dragon Age is supposed to be this epic, old school 80+ hour monster that all but demands multiple plays. There is no way in hell I'm going to be done with it before Mass Effect 2 drops. They should have done this the other way around. Mass Effect 2 first, which will be about 15 hours I'd guess, THEN drop the massive game. In that order, I'd probably be done wringing everything out of Dragon Age about the time Mass Effect 3 comes out.

What sucks is that I'm gonna get this for the PC, yet I have the 360 version of Mass Effect. I dunno if I should pony up for the PC version of the original Mass Effect in order to take advantage of the save system in ME 2.

You can get a used copy of Mass Effect for under $15. Might be worth it if you're planning on playing 2 on your 360.

I don't get the logic in splitting up preorder bonuses between retailers. Why limit your consumer can get depending on where they buy the game?

And on that note, can we please drop the preorder bonus crap? When I buy a game, I want to own everything in the game.

That said, I'm really looking forward to ME2.

I'm loving that release date! It's much sooner than I would have guessed. As for the pre-order stuff, it makes me feel like I'm being excluded from getting something, as opposed to getting a bonus. Not cool, not cool.

original Mass Effect is only $20 new on Amazon. Just take your lunch to school / work for a few days insetad of buying and you'll be good.

I'm not really interested in in-game pre-order bonuses. I figure that the developers balanced the game (ideally) to work out a certain way, and having super-awesome gear that you got because you pre-ordered is going to throw that off and make the game easier than it should be. It's not really a whole lot different than paying for DLC to get in-game shit, at least from a gameplay standpoint. Sure, you're putting your $5 towards the purchase of the game and not just towards buying in-game items, but I just think in-game items should be earned in-game. Would rather see other types of pre-order bonuses instead, honestly.

I'm still sad that there isn't a limited/special edition option.

I'd love behind the scenes content, a copy of one of the novels, or something like that.

@JamnOnTheOne:

Same here. The CE of the first Mass Effect is the only special/collector's/limited edition I own of any game, so I was planning to continue that with the sequels.

None of the pre-order bonuses are game breaking, and you can get equivalent quality items in-game. It's a nice start-of-game boost though.

The biggest reason to get the bonuses in my opinion is if you just like the look of the armor, the armors both have a very cool unique look! Stats come and go, but hot threads are forever.

I have a couple issues;

I'm starting to get worried for this new angle of preorder bonuses. They used to be trivial and only coaxed an eye-roll or in some cases a fit of laughter ("lol"), but that armour looks tits. I've never felt compelled to preorder anything, and I'm still not seriously considering it, but it's starting to look a lot more convincing.

2nd issue: too many goddamn games that I already see myself buying opening day that are coming out in the next few months and I'm going to fail school.

I'm stoked. Day one buy if there ever was one.
Between this, Borderlands, Dragon Age, Left 4 Dead 2, and Brutal Legend I'm going to have to eat ramen for next year just to fund my gaming addiction.

I don't even care about the bonuses or anything, I just wanna continue where I left off in the last game.
