Mark Reins on Nintendo's parade? photo

Although the general public is lapping up Wii's by the millions, you might not want to hold your breath while waiting for Epic to supply the engine for Nintendo's rig -- you'd likely pass out and die from the wait. As Mark Rein puts it, investing in the Wii just doesn't seem like a sound financial decision for Epic:

"I don't think there's a lot of money on making engines for the Wii. The big software dollars right now are being earned on Xbox 360, and they're going to be earned on PlayStation 3. And I think, unless you're going to sell your engine to Nintendo, you're going for scraps on that platform"

Nintendo doesn't seem to be suffering any ill-effects from Epic's lack of support, but it can't exactly be painting smiles on Nintendo execs (behind closed doors) knowing that a respected developer has written their product off their to-do list. Whether or not this will make a difference for Nintendo in the long run is unknown. However, having someone say that they are avoiding your product because they can't see it being a profitable venture is something to ponder over -- particularly when that someone is Mark Rein -- who is supplying the competition with some very pretty (and popular) games. What's your take on this?

Guitar Atomik nailed it on the head.

I doubt there is any point whatsoever making UE3.0 run on the Wii. The machine is so woefully underpowered, that what would be the point?

@ DrXym

Maybe useful to do so... Especially "if" like rumors have it. They start making a HD Wii. That's backwards compatible w/ Original Wii Titles... Ahh Ha!

1. PC FPS games >> console FPS games IR aiming or otherwise
are they more ACCESSIBLE? yes, of course, thats why M$ jumped all over it like luois anderson on a cupcake...

2. This guy never planned to, looked into developing for nintendo consoles. hes just causing a stir... Arent they getting sued by Silicon Knights?

3. Manhunt 2 is comiing to the wii, in the same vein that its coming to the PS2, doesnt mean the game was 'toned down' because its on a nintendo system, don't be stupid.

4. Nintendo will sell and support 3rd party games when 3rd parties start to make Nintendo level games. 'No more heroes' is getting a lot of rep... So is 'unbrella chronicles', manhunt 2, sadness etc, should these games start to sell we could see a change in trends, and I bet mark rein would still say the same shit

I agree with Guitar Atomik, but I also stand by the fact it'd be neat if Epic developed an engine that could really push the Wii in terms of more gritty graphics, which they are used to. It could open the system up to more traditional "hardcore" games which may help the system appeal to a more mature audience, something Nintendo has been lacking in recent years.

While certain games on the Wii definitely have the art direction needed for a great gaming experience (see Mario Galaxy, Smash BRos, Metroid Prime Corruption), it would be nice to see a 3rd party be the ones to push the system to its limits, much like Capcom did on GameCube with RE4.

Either way, this argument is stupid. I doubt internet ranting will change Mark Rein's mind. But hey, let's not let that stop us!

RAR Wii sux cuz its minigames ftw! RAR Epic does no wrong cuz they made da Gearz RAR

I don't think it is going to make a difference one way or the other what Mark Reign thinks about Nintendo or the Wii. Nintendo won't be losing any money any time soon just because Epic isn't on board, and by Epic not joining in it leaves all that money for any other 3rd party developer that might come along. The whole quote just seemed like a very pompous thing to say, sounds like someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed and needs the Whambulance called to come bring him his 360 or PS3.

But no, seriously, this will pretty much have zero effect on the Wii or any other 3rd party developers.

@Jack

Never quite said that. Just that when people rate GTA & Gears as 'Mature' I smile a little at the irony. It may be unsuitable for youngsters, but mature? Not really.

@Johnny

It does look good and can only be good for the Wii and Nintendo. I'll reserve my judgement for when I try the game, but honestly it doesn't interest me on a personal level.

The Wii can do some beautiful stuff, if Mario Galaxy is any indication, but asking it to support the U3 Engine just doesn't seem possible. So...this shouldn't affect anything.

Besides, if the engine were on here so developers could convert 360 games down to Wii...would we want it? I thought the Wii was all about getting its own game library separate from the 360 and PS3.

I'm with DanGale on this one. I've played GTA games before, and within minutes, I was frustrated by the control scheme (or lack thereof), and bored by killing hookers. If that's all there is to "mature" gaming, I'll be happy to stick with Nintendo -- as I've always since the mid 80's.

JACK is a funny and super cool man.

Because he uses the word "Pussy" in such a great manner makes him really cool.

Do you all realize that JACK is emotionally attached to his videogames? Do you all realize that he gets personally and psychologically offended when a game that he personally loves (as in a HUMAN BEING) gets dissed.

JACK, all this doesn't matter because this is all videogames, and will never fulfill that need in your life.

Besides, you come off as a twat.

Less possible 3rd party support for the shit pile that is the Wii?

I am truly shocked.

Talk about narrow mindedness. Who says it has to be Unreal Engine 3.0? The simple fact is that if someone could actually make some worthy graphics engine that'll push the Wii (and not a supplanted PS2 engine), then maybe third-parties can actually make their games look better (and have them coincide with other tools that would help make the games play better). Games like Mario Galaxy pull off such an amazing display but typical third-party "support" (in general) would rather go with their usual self-defeating stance. "Oh Nintendo games are too good, we can't compete." "Oh Nintendo system buyers only buy Nintendo systems for Nintendo games only." "Oh, we can't put games like Metal Gear Solid on Nintendo systems because it's the kiddie demographic." "Oh it has a small user base." "Oh it has no online." "Oh it's not powerful enough." Oh please, spare me.

I'll bet if the Wii slowed down enough, third-parties would be be quick to jump off the bandwagon they never helped pull. But the PS3, oh they'll keep hacking at it just believing that it's what the future of videogames systems should be, Not saying i disagree on that, but the Wii's no slouch and contrary to shortsighted beliefs, you can get deep "hardcore" games with deep storylines and gameplay. Funny enough how the 360 and PS3 supporters would retort about how despite having traditional controllers, games for those systems could actually have new gameplay mechanics even against what the Wiimote could pull off. So how is it that the same people can't see past mini-games when it comes to the Wii? It's incredible and totally stupid how both sides of this fanboy war can use the same arguments when it suits them.

If Rein doesn't like the Wii then just say so. Don't give me this crap about this and that yet the PS2 just a few short years ago was everyone's wonderboy to whom they'd toll away even with its hard to program architecture (something the N64 got flak for) and made great visuals (okay sure not everyone made great visuals; some developers really are only capable of creating beautiful works when they've got more power while others can create games like MGS3, RE4, FFX, etc., but why is everyone so adamant to say the Wii's too weak?). I think people want to see what they want to see and if the Wii has a problem, it's a BIG problem, but if it's the PS3, pffft, nothing a band aid can't fix.
