Mark Reins on Nintendo's parade? photo

Although the general public is lapping up Wii's by the millions, you might not want to hold your breath while waiting for Epic to supply the engine for Nintendo's rig -- you'd likely pass out and die from the wait. As Mark Rein puts it, investing in the Wii just doesn't seem like a sound financial decision for Epic:

"I don't think there's a lot of money on making engines for the Wii. The big software dollars right now are being earned on Xbox 360, and they're going to be earned on PlayStation 3. And I think, unless you're going to sell your engine to Nintendo, you're going for scraps on that platform"

Nintendo doesn't seem to be suffering any ill-effects from Epic's lack of support, but it can't exactly be painting smiles on Nintendo execs (behind closed doors) knowing that a respected developer has written their product off their to-do list. Whether or not this will make a difference for Nintendo in the long run is unknown. However, having someone say that they are avoiding your product because they can't see it being a profitable venture is something to ponder over -- particularly when that someone is Mark Rein -- who is supplying the competition with some very pretty (and popular) games. What's your take on this?

I honestly don't think the Wii can handle the UE3. Just from the videos I've seen of gameplay on the Wii makes me think it couldn't handle it.

Mark Rein's an asshole and I want to see a Wii Unreal title (we need a badass Wii FPS game). If Epic can at least make the graphics akin to how pretty Super Mario Galaxy's graphics look I'd be happy.

You kinda took the quote out of context. He's saying there's no money in the 3rd party market for them to make games. Which is why he says that unless they sell it to Nintendo, it's not worth it. He's not writing off the system, he's making a value judgement that the 3rd party developers for the Wii aren't going to want to shell out money for the Unreal Engine 3. This could easily mean that he understands that graphics aren't the main draw of the Wii, which is one of the biggest draw of the UE3. It would be a significant investment for Epic to create an engine for the Wii, and with their graphic centric design, I'd be willing to bet it'd turn out sub-par, at least with what we're used to from Epic.

Well, he has a point about 3rd party publishers. Historically Nintendo has practically muffled any real 3rd party noise on the system, but to say there's no money to be made? The Wii has the largest userbase out of any "current gen/new gen" (whatever you prefer to call it) system. That's a lot of people itching to play 'Gears of War Party 2: Dom Got Me All Sticky'. Rated E for everyone.

As I primarily play my 360, I'm happy Epic continues to support the system, but does anyone else get the feeling another Moneyhat-boat sets sail whenever Mark Rein bashes Nintendo?

Also, I think that the Wii is a console mainly to bring in non gamers with the casual type games. UE is in my opinion for the more hardcore in depth games for people are gamers.

He is right, I have a Wii and it is poop unless you are drunk with your friends and want to have an epic bowling session. I think the Wii is very innovative and fun to play but I wouldn't want to play high powered FPS's on it...that’s what the 360 does best. I am sure someday the PS3 will catch up to the 360 but it is not there yet. I personally am content with the Wii being the console I play fun cute games with my kids or my wife’s drunk friends.

I agree with him. The fanbase wants colorful pussy ass games like brain training, Nintendo Dogs, Cooking Mama & Mysims. Epic doesn't specialize in gay ass pussy shit. I will be fine with SSBB & Galaxy on the Wii, but leave all the Mature greatness on the 360/PS3 where its apreciated.

IDK how Manhunt 2 is exactly Wii material.
( Being Mature in Content. )
& how it is not for 360 or BS3?

but w/ games like Mushroom Men who needs Epic.

Its not Wii material. Rockstar wanted to see how well a mature title does on the system. Look at the sells, shit it the same game came out on the PS3/360 they wouldn't had to change the content. That just goes to show you that the Wii's fanbase doesn't appreciate mature games.

Have you not seen Galaxy, Brawl and MP3. That kind of stigma comes with the lazy developers who do a straight port of PS2 crap.

@ Jack of No Trades
You talk as if a well-made Mature game would not be appreciated on the Wii. I can look at past Nintendo systems and see great titles aimed for older audiences that worked wonders. Perfect Dark, Metal Gear Solid: TS, Killer 7 (still greatly unappreciated) Resident Evil 4, etc., are all really great games aimed at older games. The Wii is being aimed at casual (softcore?) gamers, but what the system needs are some well made games for the hardcore crowd. To echo NukaCola's genius, I'll take a game that looks as pretty as Super Mario Galaxy but has the content of Gears of War any day.

Part of what is making me less interested in the direction games have gone lately has been the proliferation of the software engine. Thanks to engines, many current games look too similar, which I attribute to a generic look. I'll take a Killer7, Wind Waker, Zak and Wiki, No More Heroes, Mushroom Men or any 2D game over another Unreal powered hyper-realistic game. I constantly find myself missing the 16-bit era more every day.
DanGale's Avatar
DanGale at 10/05/2007 09:41
What? Where did I say that? Lightthrower complained that the Wii can barely handle PS2 graphics and I simply pointed out that Brawl etc. look fantastic and that's a stigma attached because of lazy developers. I never mentioned Gears/UT3 or even tried comparing the Wii to other consoles.

Stop trolling.

JACK stop man, not everyone is arguing that. OF course the Wii will never have graphics like that. He's simply stating Smash and Mario etc etc.. that their graphics are really good, better than anything on the PS2 and GC, and that its beginning to show how lazy people are being with the Wii.

Case in point : They can do ALOT better with the graphics, but it'll never be like a Gears game.

who the fucked pissed in Mark Rein cereal and told him it was milk.. He has always had a dislike towards the Wii or Nintendo I should say.. Looks up any statement he has towards Nintendo it's very smart ass comments...

Piss on Unreal engine.. For some strange reason he acts as though the Unreal engine is the only one that is top notch material.. ID and Crysis are all on par with Unreal any way..

But this will be a mute point in 5 years any way.. But knowing how much of an ass Mark is he probably say that nintendo wont be able to handle the next epic grpahic installment he has planned..

Find the Video of this and see his I'm a dick vibe he puts out..

If they could just make an engine that could render Unreal Tournament 2 (the one on the Xbox with 3rd person/1st person fighting/shooting. I forget if that's its real name) graphics on the Wii, I would cream my pants. If anyone can do it, it's Epic and they deserve to put out such a quality product to show the Wii can handle good looking graphics from 3rd party developers.

On the other hand, I understand why he said what he did.

I agree. The Wii does need games like Gears, but we will never see them unless it shows in the fanbase. The majority of the Wii's fanbase would rather play cheap minigames than a game like Gears or UT. Hell I hope some of the casuals buy Brawl so we can count on another sequel.

@JAck: You really are ignorant. Neither Sony, MS nor Nintendo allow AO games on their systems. That being said, Manhunt would have had to be censored on any platform other than PC.

And Brawl and Galaxy both look better to me than Gears/UT3. I don't play games for realism, or giant hulking men brutally butchering things. Thanks for playing.

Look at some of the other violent games on the PS3/360. They are way more brutal than MH2. Violence is easier accepted on the 360/PS3. You are the fucking idiot! I like both UT/Gear and Brawl/Galaxy so shut the fuck up pussy!

GFC @ nilcam, that brings up a good point.. Games such as metroid or whatever game you like proves that with a good art direction that it can look pretty damn good with out a super omega graphic card...

Yea Gears of war or whatever your favorite game with uber grpahic may be cool, but is it really that nice to look at? Without a good art team I found uber graphics to be a waste..
JACK of No Trades's Avatar
JACK of No Trades at 10/05/2007 09:59
Good art and good graphics can co-exist. This isn't even the arguement. The point I was trying to make was that Violent games are more acceptable on the PS3/360 than Wii. Why would Epic want to make Unreal Cooking game to put on the Wii? They would have to use a modified version of the Ureal 2 engine to develop the game. And even if they brought a Mature game like UT to the Wii it would sell like crap!

"Manhunt 2" is rated M

"The Darkness" where you eat hearts is more violent.
Besides that fact you should see the rating reasons for the Mature Rating. It's chalk full of reasons. I think it should've been AO!

Yes, Sony & Micro$oft don't allow AO's as doesn't Wii.

He is not talking about graphics, or even short term monitary gain, but long term. If you came out with a game for the wii before christmas, no matter what it is, or how bad, it is going to rake in the jillions, but when you consider the long term, Ninty will cock block you with more mario crap and you won't be able to stand out from the clutterware.

Why shouldn't they write it off? The software attach rate on the Wii is abysmal, especially for 3rd parties. If that continues, they will ultimately abandon Nintendo altogether. Sure the Wii sells like crazy, but if no one buys games for it, devs and publishers lose.

And I agree, The Darkness is the most violent game I've played, that wasn't given an AO rating.

It's catch 22, third party games don't sell well on the Wii because third party games on the Wii are utter crap (usually), gamers see the third party crap and then they see the Nintendo made games, obviously the Nintendo games will sell.

If third party developers were to take the Wii seriously instead of using it as a quick cash in or a quick PS2 port centre, then I'm sure they would be able to make a substantial profit on Wii.

Wii owners usually own other consoles too, they can see the quality of games like RE5 or Assassin's Creed, they know when a developer is making an effort and they will buy that game regardless of which console it is on. If Mario galaxy was made by a third party developer, I'm sure it would sell.

I think what Mark Rein is really trying to say is that it's not profitable to make a new game engine for the Wii since developement on the system is relatively cheap and the hardware is easy to develop for since technically, people have been making stuff on the hardware for years.

In contrast, the graphics standard for the 360 and PS3 is so high and expensive to achieve, you pretty much NEED a 3rd party engine to make your game to cut down on cost and time for development.
