Mark Rein: No plans for another Unreal game photo
     Epic Games

Do you remember the days back before all of the Tournament action? If you do, you'll remember that the original Unreal was the game we used to show off the power of our PC rigs. It also raised the bar for 3D games, and was a visual benchmark for the rest of the FPS world at the time. Those are fond memories for many a gamer. It's too bad that there's no plans to revisit those good times with another Unreal.

According to CVG, Epic's Mark Rein doesn't have a follow-up the 2003 Unreal II on his to-do list right now. In an interview with bit-tech, Rein says that "there’s definitely no plans right now for an Unreal 3 game. Will we have new IPs? Sure, but not right now.”

If Epic does get around to it, I hope they shoot for the PS3 or Xbox 360 again like they did with Gears of War and Unreal Tournament III -- my PC really sucks right now.

That screenshot filled me with joy! A proper level editor, a good game and a cracking screensaver!

Unreal was probably the first time I played an FPS and drooled on my keyboard. The progression of the game (adventurin' and exploring), and the pretty graphics just did it for me.

Unreal II got returned in 30 minutes. Suck fest.

Unreal III would be like Gears or UT3, and I highly doubt they can bring back the EPICness of the original Unreal.

Unreal II had so much potential... but yeah, it sucked hard. And the ending made it even worse!

Meh, I'm still waiting for that Dreamcast port of Unreal that everyone was talking about when the console was still unreleased.

Why would Epic make another Unreal game?

having a real campaign now in UT3 i think they don't need to worry on a Unreal game.. just continue UT and GoW and it will continue to rake in the cash

I actually like Unreal 2, a lot.

But there is supposed to be a full single player campaign in ut3 (which is not the 3rd unreal tournament, so annoying, theres ut, ut2k3, and ut2k4, which makes ut3 the 4th) to tie us off from death threats for not making a single player game.

I'm still amazed how well the original turned out considering how long it was in development hell.

Seriously you all hated it? Just thinking about that level with all of the spiders and the flame thrower, holy crap that was fun.

@ZMT

It is Unreal Tournament 3.
Unreal Tournament 2 had two editions, 2003 and 2004.

I doubt UT3 will have a real singleplayer mode.
It's more likely that they just added a bit of story to a player vs bots mode.

I never understood all the hate for Unreal II. No, it wasn't GotY material but there was some very fun combat, very fun weapons and XMP (once it was made) had some of the coolest and most creative ideas to update a tired gametype in ages.

Unreal2 was like stiff clown shoes for me. Totally not the direction I wanted it to go, but what did I expect? Unreal was a benchmark game.

Yeah I didn't like single player enough to play it, let alone; UT3 is so heavy on multiplayer having the developers waste their time on single player wouldn't make any sense

if you can use a mouse and a keyboard I'm all for PS3 version, but then again, the news is they're NOT going for it, maybe 'cause the tournament is already taking a plot of its own now, dunno...

+1 for the original unreal remade using a modern engine... not the cheesy dumbfest that was unreal2 , it seriously looked more like some kind of online 3d chat program... a very good engine, but lousy use of the engine

i wish that the level designers spent more time, well, designing more levels, instead of doing mundane things like placing every single tree in the level etc... using the old universal translator to get the storyline is a heck of a better way than that black dude in unreal 2...

I liked Unreal2. (Spiders + flamethrowers) + (black hole cannon + 666 ammo) + (raping skaarj) = pretty okay. I only played it once, though. I believe I'm the only person on the planet who enjoys single player campaigns more than multiplayer. Campaigns have redeemed (to me) Halo 1&2, Quake 2, and..more that I can't think of right now.

Anyway this news makes me sad. /(Q_Q)\
