Mark Hamill has never been asked to play Luke Skywalker photo

With a plethora of Star Wars games out there dealing with the rebuilding of the Jedi after the events of episodes IV, V and VI old Luke Skywalker has been showing up every once in a while. One would assume that since Mark Hamill played young Luke Skywalker and he is now older that he would be a perfect fit to voice old Luke Skywalker. The actor is already a veteran of voicing videogame characters, so logic would lead one to believe he'd be a perfect fit.

Yet he has never been asked to voice Luke Skywalker in a game... ever. Speaking with gaming mag PC Zone, Hamill was discussing his game voicing career when they asked him about voicing Skywalker. "When I played Luke from 1977 to 1983, games were in their infancy. I talked about turning a page and starting a new chapter. Those movies had a beginning, middle and end, and everyone sort of moved on," he said.

"I don't really know how to answer that, because I've never been asked to do it. That's fine, though."

"If you're playing Luke the way he was in the films - from his late teens to mid-'20s - I've outgrown the role. In the story, Luke is so boy-next-door farm boy, it's like Dorothy in Oz. All the other characters that surround him are fantastic."

I'd like to say I'm terribly upset by this radical injustice, but it's hard to care when the man himself doesn't care. He's way better as the Joker anyway.

This doesn't sound right, why would you not cast the Man himself?!

On the other hand, he's probably expensive as hell to get(for Star Wars related projests anyways) but he's been great in the other games he has done, so we know he's good, maybe too good to afford?

Ahh well.

He's made a career for himself, and hasnt really tried to trade off his Star Wars fame.

He's always been happy to lampoon his Star Wars background (See Cockknocker, that was the best part of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back)

So good on him, and half of Arkham Asylum's win came from his Joker...

Why aren't episodes 7-9 made in game form? The actors that need to be are mostly alive, and their 3D models are ageless. Whoops, sorry for introducing that idea to the world.

But he played the Joker so that makes up for it.

What I dont get is why people feel the need to say that a story is old news. Guess what eddienoteddy, not everyone has heard this story. Sorry if we dont spend all day everyday looking for information on star wars stories to fill the pathetic void in our lives like you apparently do.

While I sort of agree that he's too old to play "young" Luke, I'd say his current voice would be perfect for any later expanded universe stuff. If LA even dipped into the New Jedi Order or Legacy, he'd have the perfect voice for Luke!

Hamill was tons better as the Joker in Btas than he ever was as Luke Skywalker anyway.

@Forest Green Lantern

Hate taking it off topic, but I've always wondered this too. I know he said "my bad", but I just wanted to point out that you're not alone Lantern. I too want to punch someone in the face everytime I see "old news".. when generally that "old" news is like 4-5 days old. People forget "old" is relative.

I've played about a half dozen EU games with an older Luke Skywalker, and I've always felt that the sound-alikes have done outstanding jobs.

I'd assume it was always a matter of perceived costs. Lot cheaper to just use a sound-alike, most likely, than to hire the man himself.

What's weird is that I always thought Jedi Knight II used him. I had to look it up just barely. The Luke Skywalker in that game sounds more like the young Mark Hamill in Star Wars than Mark Hamill does, these days.At least, to me. Or maybe I'm just misremembering the voice. It's been years since I played the game.

I think Mark Hamill is dead on here when he talks about Luke's character. Luke Skywalker wasn't that interesting or cool of a character, but everyone else was. Han Solo was a bad-boy smuggler, Darth Vader was a bad ass who choked anyone who screwed up, Bobba Fett was a freaking bounty hunter, Calrisian was a gambler turned semi-honest businessman, and Leia was a princess turned rebel leader.

Had Luke not been Vader's son, he would have just ended up being a moisture farmer on Tatooine for the rest of his life - a loser, in other words. There is nothing inherently interesting about his character than his ancestry and destiny.

Had Vader's Mom not spent so much time fishing down by the river near the nuclear plant, he wouldn't have had so many metachlorians in his blood, and thus wouldn't be able to do such fantastic things as choke people through a TV screen.

Everyone is a loser unless they got that "one thing" going for them.

Bob Bergen has done a great job voicing him, so no worries. And it's not like Hamill's been hurting for work over the years.

Heh, it's not quite as bad as Ernie Hudson. He wanted to do the voice for his character in the Ghostbusters cartoon, but they picked Arsenio Hall, instead.

And Bill Murray got the guy who did his character's voice fired (for sounding too much like Garfield the cat, which the guy, also did the voice for). Then he goes and does the Garfield the movie voice.

Better than being Leonard Nimoy, all he ever gets asked to do is be Spock. I bet he'd loved to do anything else ever.

Don't think he'd be right for Luke anymore... He didn't hit hist stride in the films until Empire Strikes Back, anyway.

And it would be kind of creepy rooting for a guy who does the Joker a little too well.
