Mario's 'family line' puts the series into perspective photo

If you ever wanted to see the sheer scale of the Mario franchise, look no further than Limit Break's impressive family line, a handy chart that shows off every single Mario game ever made. The chart breaks it down to show where certain games "fathered" others, and breaks off to show where certain games within the franchise became franchises in their own right.

The chart, of course, is absolutely huge and well worth checking out, just for curiosity's sake. I'd be really interested to see this guy do a chart for Mega Man as well ... but that's probably a project that could take a lifetime to complete.

Well, Mario you little whore! Putting yourself in all those games, knew there was a lot but that does put it into perspective on just how many there are.

Im surprised that there is no Mario Golf for the Wii yet. Maybe Wii Sports filled that void?

Mario RPG should be the "father" of the Paper Mario series, and Mario Land 2 should be the father of the Wario series.

I know I'm a loser for being bothered by little things like that, but still.

Thats a great chart. Although wasn't there a Dr. Mario on GBA? Google says yes, and apparently it was a duel game with Puzzle League. The chart doesn't have that one though.

Hmm. I had a class with someone who did something quite like this for a class project, and he had a good 100+ games, but I'm not sure if he had absolutely every single one.

Wonder if it's the same guy. *strokes chin*

Nice. But what does Tetris Attack have to do with Mario? Also, look at all those educational games with Mario, horrible. I remembered playing Mario is Missing, that game was fucking terrible, they even gave you a huge ass poster map.

This is awesome, but yeah, there are a few inconsistencies. The chart puts all the Mariokarts as siblings, yet the Wariowares as children to the original Warioware. Hrm.

Mario & Wario didn't give birth to all the Wario spin-offs. Mario Land 2 did.

Its wrong; Why isn't supermairo land 2 (SML2) connected to Warioland (SML3) and Super mario RPG should be connected to Paper mario and mario & luigi.

I'd rather a Zelda family line. Mostly because I like Zelda more, but also because some asshole out there is going to think it's a timeline and throw a hissy fit. I want to be there when that happens.

@deadhaed8

yeah I actually own that game sorta. Funny story, some years ago my parents bought my brother and I each a game. For me they bought Final fantasy 1 + 2: dawn of souls and for my brother they bought Puzzle League w/ DR mario. He was not pleased and I was very happy.:)

@Phoenix Gamma: yeah, that'd be... oh wait. Yeah, i know it's a game timeline though, but pretty much covers it

...The hell is Punch Ball Mario Bros.?

Also, ho-ho! Cheap shot at Megaman! I'd bet there at at least as many, say, Bomberman games.

As has been mentioned already, their organization leaves something to be desired. The Wario games need to be spun off SML2 instead of Wario and Mario. The Smash Bros games may not be Mario games, but he's more than a cameo in them so they belong there.

Also Mario and Luigi should spawn Mario and Luigi 2 then Mario and Luigi 3, not both of them on the same branch (and they should be spawned off SM:RPG as had already been mentioned).

If you're going to include Super Mario 64 DS it needs to be spun off of the original Mario 64 since it's the same game. That also means Super Mario DX on GBC should be included too. But not the NES Classics/Famicom Mini version since unlike the GBC game it was just a port, whereas DX had been redone to fit the screen of the GBC and included SMB2.

For ease of reading the sports game spin-offs should probably come off from one point so it doesn't clutter up the rest of the tree.

But that's just from a quick read through. I'm sure there's far more things that could be pointed out. It's still a neat look at the whoring of Mario.

Like Kvb said, they messed up Wario's feature. He debuted in Super Mario Land 2, which debuted a spinoff game named "Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land", and from there teh series began.

Shouldn't Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island be a direct descendant of Super Mario World?

This is pretty accurate, from my point of view. Keep in mind that the chart is organized not only in terms of time and new series, but also in terms of game mechanics and thematic elements (explaining Tetris Attack's placement). Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is not a direct descendant of the main series because of its differing gameplay mechanics, even though it's usually included anyway. Using that same argument, you could point out that Super Mario Land 2 didn't really lead to the Wario Land series because of Wario Land's differing mechanics, but that could go either way. The only thing I really disagree about is the categorization of the Mario RPGs - you could argue that they have no thematic links to Super Mario RPG, but I think that the similarity of the game mechanics should have Paper Mario as a direct descendant of Super Mario RPG, and Mario & Luigi as a spin-off of the first Paper Mario, due to similar tone.

It's a good chart but little things like the mario karts and the paper marios not being children to the originals while others were got kind of annoying.
