Well lookie here. It appears that the PlayStation 3 isn't the only system smacked with delay news lately. It seems our good ol' pals at Nintendo want to show that they too know how to delay an anticipated title (let's forget that whole Zelda delay just for fun). Mario Party 8, the only game you were probably looking forward to in the next few months on the Wii, is getting delayed until the 2nd quarter (that's big boy speak for later in the year). From GoNintendo:
How did I know that something like this would happen. We get all this great news about Mario Party 8 yesterday. It gets me psyched for the game, something I haven’t felt for the series in awhile. Now we get the official press release from Nintendo that discusses first quarter releases, and Mario Party 8 is nowhere to be found.
I made my way over to the Nintendo press room to check the software list. The first entry in the “Q2Åç heading is none other than Mario Party 8. No telling how far into 2nd quarter it has been pushed, but I wouldn’t expect it to be too dramatic. Is anyone else bummed by this?
Mmmmm, I can smell and taste your Nintendo fanbot tears right now. Delicious.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
This is a big meh for me. Never saw much appeal of the mario party series. As for upcoming wii games in the next few months, there's warioware, elebits and trauma surgeon for me. Hooray for eurodelays...
Besides do we really need another offline party game so soon? It seems like thats all we are being shoveled.
Late 2007 at the earliest for the console to reach must-buy.
For the PS3, early 2008.
Really.
I foretold of this backlash a few months back on a podcast. That if Nintendo did well at launch by March people would be turning on them if they didn't have an online plan or excellent third party support. Here's the backlash from guys like me...cause so far, I'm not impressed.
Summa, why are you so fucking stupid?
For the Wii, it's kinda: "I don't really care if it's delayed."
PS3: "Sony should stop sucking and start releasing some fucking shit on time."
and the ps 3 does need some fucking shit on time...cause every time i go to target or walmart is see a bunch of ps3's stacked up and no wiis.
Could it be because people really DON'T care about Mario Party?
If Destructoid released news about Mario Galaxy, Prime 3, or SSBB being pushed back to '08, THEN people will care.
Because we all know, SSBM is even more fun to play intoxicated.
Anyway, Summa likes to bust the stones of Nintendo fanboys. It gets them riled up. I don't think he hates Nintendo.
Meh.
Okay, granted, the Wii's honestly the first console I could imagine getting Mario Party for since, well, the first Mario Party for the N64. The Wii tends to force SOME sort of innovation, at least.
Now, I get what you're on about. You think that people have a hard on for giving Sony crap for no reason, and have an inexplicable amount of tolerance for anything that Nintendo does, or doesn't do as the case may be. Just like Summa likes to pretend that Sony and Microsoft fanboys don't exist, or are somehow less retarded than Nintendo fanboys, when the fact is that they're all equal on the waste-of-skin scale. In other words, you've created a reality for yourself, and have applied it to the rest of the world.
Really though, I could speculate that the reason people are willing to give Sony shit, is because of Sony's recent track record. Whether or not it's right, it's in fashion to shit in Sony's milk, because people have it in mind that Sony deserves it. I'm betting that everyone who hates Sony now, points at every delay as more proof that Sony is circling the bowl, just barely keeping from being flushed.
Now as far as Nintendo goes, while Summa may sometimes come across as a douche, he's right about one thing. Nintendo fans are die-hards. They're willing to forgive alot of abuse in the name of their favorite company, and so while Nintendo really seemed to be on to something with the Wii, Nintendo fans will ignore the fact that, much like the GC, Nintendo is in danger of squandering any sort of potential they may have had to succeed, by allowing the same shit to happen with it, that happened with the N64 and GC. A fancy controller doesn't automatically ensure success. Games are required in order for it to mean anything, and so far, we've got nothing but half-assed ports that have Wii controller functionality thrown in. Meh.
So yeah, there you have it. Everyone hates Sony, and Nintendo fans will take a spiked bat up the anus if it means not having to admit that Nintendo may fuck this one up, just like they did their last couple of home consoles before it.
Personally, I'd have to own a PS3 in order to give a shit about anything concerning it, including delays. And I'd have to give a shit about the Mario Party series to care much that the newest game in the series is being delayed. Makes sense, no?
Probably not. I swear that there was a point to this, before I got disinterested about a quarter of the way through, but couldn't stop typing.
And, honestly, Mario Party 8 wasn't even on my radar. It wasn't even announced until the middle of September and the first screen shots weren't revealed until November. I certainly wasn't expecting it any time soon and am somewhat surprised that anyone was.
Also, is that a pretzel Summa's eating? Holy shit, he's lucky to have survived that attack.
Not a pretzel. Pizza crust.
ShadowXOR. Shut up. Summa is part of the D-toid package. And a manly one at that. mmmmmm.
I think people complaining about lack of wii games are jumping the gun. The launch was phenomononly successful, and it's still selling out everywhere. Only a couple of months in, there's already an installed user base of millions. If you think publishers are going to ignore that, you're being just plain ignorant. The reason we're getting so many shitty ports at the moment is because they're extremely quick and easy for devs to churn out. Due to the how popular the wii is, they're pretty much guarenteed to proffit on them. Remember; ubisoft were the only company to really throw their chips in with nintendo a couple of years back(true, we could have hoped for better from them) so it's going to take a while for the rest to catch up. It'll happen. Be patient. Noone forced you to be an early adopter.
A game like GRAW 2 being delayed is certainly a bigger story, because 360 will now have it as an exclusive.
Wii Play
Bust a move bash
Prince of Persia (barely)
TMNT
Blazing Angels
Tiger Woods
SSX Blur
Godfather Blackhand
Sonic
Yeah, of course that's why we're getting half-assed ports of year-old games. Because it's cheap easy to throw a port together, tack on some Wii functionality, and then send it out to market. Ubi did it, and continues to do it, and if it proves to be a viable market strategy, then they'll keep right on doing it. I wouldn't be surprised to see others follow suit.
If throwing together a slip-shod port and tacking on Wii control functions is a sure way to net yourself some cash, then where's the motivation for developers to actually spend some time and cash developing original IPs, that truly take advantage of what the system has to offer?
If people don't stop buying these games, then developers won't stop making them, and we'll run the risk of having another N64 or GC on our hands.
So really, it's not that there aren't a whole slew of games available that should be worrying Wii owners, it's that most of the games are ports of older games, and in the case of some of the Ubi ports, have turned out to be utter crap. It's frightening to think that this has the potential to be an ongoing issue, if developers and gamers alike don't wise up. That's a notion worth worrying about.
