Mario Kart Wii will support text chat. Welcome to 1994, Nintendo photo

Nintendo has recently announced some of the new online features that Mario Kart Wii will contain. First, lets start with the good. The game will be up to 12 players online and players will also be able to watch their friend's race in spectator mode. You'll also be able to compare your race times against other players through the Mario Kart Channel. Easily the best part of Mario Kart's online service is that you'll be able to download other people's ghost data so you can see how they were able to get such a good time on tracks.

Now here's the bad news: You can talk to your friends, but only through text. You can create a room and invite people to text while waiting to play the game, but you can only text them in these rooms. And God knows how broken the texting system will be. If it's anything like Opera's text Wiimote interface, then forget about it.

How long is it going to take Nintendo to realize their Online service is completely broken? At least the service is free ... oh wait, nevermind!

Not being able to chat DURING the game is gay. Having to type to chat at all is liberace gay. What's the point of playing online at all with the Wii? It's too much hassle.

The one thing that was going to convince me to buy a Wii was Mario Kart (not gay SS Bros.). First, they took out the two character-per kart feature. Alright, I could put up with that. But now this? What is going through Nintendo's mind? Is XBL not a big enough testament to how much money can be made and how much fun can be had with a fully modern online experience? GAY In fact, it's so gay that the gay kitty even says so!

AFAIK there are no teams in Mario Kart games, and I don't want or need some 12 year screaming in my ear telling me how I just got pwned.

Voice chat is a "who really cares" feature in games where there is no team dynamic...but I'm sure the sky is still falling? :)

Text chat won't be /that/ bad if they let you use your USB keyboard for it.

Am truly puzzled why the lack of Voice in an arcade racing game seems to annoy ppl?? Voice Chat is great in Rainbow Six and team based games, but other than whoopping like an idiot, or screaming pre-pubescent obscenities over a low quality voice channel... What the hell would you use it for?

The wii has proven that ppl want games, FUN games, if you want a chat, go on MSN...

I don't see this as a big deal - at least Nintendo is making a little progress with each major game.

Text chat will suffice before and after matches, although I have to admit that nothing is better than hearing "OOOOOOOOOOH!!!!! WHO DID THAT!?" after you send a shell careening off a wall and into the side of someones kart.

I'm puzzled why people aren't complaining about MKWii having only 12-player online races! I mean look at PGR or Forza Motorsport 2, these feature even 8-player multi, that's -4 more! /sarcasm

i'm with tincas and hadoken. not really sure what text chat would add, but for that reason i'm really not sure what voice chat would add. just because it's it's technologically possible, doesn't mean it's a good idea. unless you love being called a gayhomosexfag by sweaty-palmed troglodytes.

stereotypes ftw!

How do you not know what voice chat would add? How about being able to communicate with the person you're racing so that you might actually be able to race that same person again. It's completely stupid to have a great race with someone in a random game and then never see that person again.

The real question is how does having voice chat hurt? There isn't one game that forces voice chat on you. If you're not interested, you don't have to buy a head set. There's no reason for anyone to ever complain about voice chat, because no one is forcing you to use it.

If I want to voice chat with a friend, guess I'll just turn on my 360 do private chat while I play on the WII.

@Jim Sterling

I think its more moronic that you didn't even realize that pay and play is only for certain games, and Nintendo hasn't even said what the feature will add. MKWii is still free and you look like the moron.

Maby they shouldn't have put any kind of comunication in the game, therefore people would pay attention less to what the've got dumbed down compared to xbox live and pay more attention to the shitload of new features they'v added since the last online Mario Kart game.

hey, if people mess up the first time they diserve a second chance. If you suck the first time you shouldn't even try again, if sex worked that way we'd sure have a lot less unplanned pregnancies whouldn't we.
