Mario Kart Wii teaches schoolkids to drive safely photo

Children at Vail Christian High School near Eagle in Colorado are currently being taught how to drive safely, and how not to use a cellphone while getting from A to B. Of course, because most people can't be taught anything properly, the school is using quite a unique method of getting the message across -- they're making kids play Mario Kart Wii.

The school's "Distracted and Drowsy Driving Project" charges students with the task of winning a game of Mario Kart while attempting to use a cellphone. The project aims to show how difficult it is to drive effectively while texting or conversing, and apparently the scheme is yielding results.

"I ran into a lot of things and it was very stressful," says 13-year-old Alli O-Brian. "... I don't think I'll text."

Hopefully the teachers did point out that you can't really throw turtle shells at other people's cars in real life.

Personally, I think it would be more effective to sit them behind the wheel of a real car, force them onto a busy freeway and tell them to get to Walmart and back without dying. Not only will they learn how to drive properly, they'll probably be too traumatized to get into another car for the rest of their lives, should they survive. Not driving at all is the safest way to handle a car.

I actually don't think that what they're doing is a bad idea, but maybe I'm crazy.

I approve of your very Darwinian approach in that last paragraph Jim. Let God sort 'em out! This is a Christian school we're talking about afterall.

If it keeps these spoiled brats and celebrity wannabes with their huge freaking sunglasses to keep both eyes on the fuggen road then I'm all for it. Somehow I doubt it it will reach everyone that way but if it can stop one of them from rear ending me because they were texting/talking that's fine with me. Hell I'd even take a turtle shell thrown at my car rather than getting rear ended.

I think it's great whenever video games are used for something positive, even when it's as cheesy as this. It's certainly better than the video driving simulator I used in High School.

How fucking retarded. How about they actually drive an actual driving simulator. I mean, what the hell, Mario Kart? I think it would be safer to NOT drive than to practice driving on Mario Kart.

In flight school I had to play Star Fox while having sex with a stewardess.

When I drive, I always look out for those drivers driving the same car as me but capable of going 2-3 times as fast as me while behind me until they get far enough head that driving doesn't become fun, but becomes a "challenge" and then I drive past them as they revert to a snail's pace, and then they go the speed of sound to catch up and so on and so forth. Driving to the mall is SO MUCH MORE FUN that way.

I think the Chilluns tag would have been more suited to this article, but I'm biased since I love that word so much. Anyway, news about video games and not murder is refreshing, but seeing this though...I find it ridiculous.

It is funny that they used Mario Kart for the example but at the end of the day it's still showing them that your concentration is diverted while using the phone and you end up making more mistakes.

I don't think you detractors fully understand the point of this. It's clearly not to show the kids that Mario Kart is how real driving works. It is probably one of the cheapest, most accessible ways to get semi-realistic control (in that it's turning a wheel instead of tilting a joystick), and the whole point was to demonstrate to the children how distracted driving affects their performance, in clear, quantifiable ways. Hell, if this idea means there will be fewer teens out there texting while driving, I don't see how you could call this "retarded."

@Dexter345; Yeah! I remember having something like that at school, only we had to play Gran Turismo whilst holding a phone and talking to our teacher about random questions such as 'What's your favourite Kinks song?' and 'What the hell do you mean you don't know who the Kinks are?'. Fun times.

@Jim Sterling; http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8056700.stm - Turns out that the controversial young father playing Saints Row actually isn't a father at all. For some reason it took this long for someone to test it. If this was Jeremy Kyle he'd have been tested already and they'd have dicked about on air for 15 minutes.

LOL

Why has no one lol'd at this yet? LOL people!

Imo this isn't such a bad idea. It gets the point across. Anyone who thinks this is retarded because LOL MARIO ISNT REAL DRIVING is well, being a retard themselves. I don't need to explain why.
