More and more news keeps coming from the Nintendo Conference (I guess Nintendon't need TGS after all). This video for Mario Kart Wii really doesn't show off too much, unfortunately, but we are able to see a couple of new things for the series.
First, the new motorbikes are shown in action and from the looks of it, it's just a cosmetic thing and won't be better than a regular Kart. Oh, and you can pop a wheelie. The other, and interesting, new addition to Mario Kart is the ability to do tricks with your Karts. The video shows Mario doing a few flips with his Kart and everytime he lands it, he gets a speed boost.
I loved the SNES and N64 versions to death. DoubleDashkilled the series for me though. I just hope the Wii version will get me back into the series. You liking what you see Dtoiders?
Hamza Aziz, Destructoid's Community Director, has been here since day one. He was born when a tiger coughed up a hairball into a pool of ooze. He was one of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles before budget cuts. Hamza works as a previews editor and manages a team in San Francisco. To date he has given away tens of thousands of dollars in prizes to readers. What a dick. Actually, Hamza is as kind as he is hairy.

What are you talking about!? Double dash was amazing, my borther and I dominated that game so many times. If you had a friend to play with it was crazy awesome. Love to see some online double dash at some point.
The bikes thing is really weird and "threw me for a loop."
I mean, what is Nintendo going to call the game...Mario Kart & Motorcycles Too?!?
The tricks look weak and don't seem to add much to gameplay (because you can boost on the ground), but they have a lot of time to polish this for its '08 release - I say wait and see.
BTW:
- My friend really got into Double Dash, but I never did. I think you had to play it Co-Operatively to even enjoy it. Every time I play DD I get bored pretty fast.
Super Mario Kart - Good.
Mario Kart 64 - Awesome.
Mario Kart Super Circuit - Weird controls but still very awesome.
Mario Kart Double Dash - WTF, this isn't the Mario Kart series I love.
Mario Kart DS - Phew we are back on track, thank god..
As for Mario Kart Wii, it looks awesome. I'm glad to see it's not the same old Mario Kart and that Nintendo are doing new things with the series.
Hopefully the online mode won't be so limited like on the DS & will be free of snaking.
Even with the new bikes, it still looks like classic Mario Kart, which is great. Now if only the Wii was set-up for downloadable content, it could let you download some retro tracks a la Mario Kart DS.
I'm afraid this has got that slow laboured look to it that as been the trademark of all 3D Mario Kart games.
The Super Famicom with it's no nonsense, speedy mode 7 technique is still the benchmark for all Mario Kart games. It's simple, make the game super fast with tight controls. I just think this Wii version is a step in the wrong direction, it's too floaty and weightless.
Want to get excited about it but just can't, I expect some indie developer who feels the same way as me, to release a proper kart game on Wii Ware.
My main concern is that I love Mario Kart for battle mode. MKDD sucked ass as a hole(lol) and the battle levels were weak at best. 64 battles were good (lego land was the greatest hands down) but nothing has been as good as the original for massive marathons of shell slinging.
I was pretty underwhelmed by Double Dash as a whole although I can see why people did really enjoy the game. Hopefully this goes back to mario Kart 64 in terms of the battle mode design I put in way too much time playing battle mode when it came out.
And I second galagabug on the unicycles. Uniracers was fucking awesome!
I liked double dash, it was pretty fun. Mario 64 kicked ass though. I spent a lot of time racing my friends and playing in the battle mode. This looks pretty good.
As a guy who played Double-Dash before Mario Kart 64, I have to be the voice of reason here: while MK64 was probably mind-blowingly awesome when it came out, Double-Dash is better in almost every way: graphics, kart control, sense of speed, and just overall fun. Plus you get to pick two racers in MKDD! And let's face it, the tracks in MK64 kind of blew.
By the way I hear everyone talk about it, I was deeply dissapointed in it when I downloaded it off Virtual Console. Even my wife, a certified MK fiend, refused to play that "ugly boring version." Ouch!
I loved the SNES, Gamecube and DS versions to death actually... the only one I really didn't like was the N64 version. Definitely have high hopes for this new Wii one.
I fucking loved doubledash. the powerslides, the improved control, the better interactive environments, it felt like more of an evolution in the series than the paltry leap from mk to mk64.
plus, frustration levels with the balancing of racers on that one had me pulling my mohawk out in clumps.
Looks slow and boring. Motorcycles? Pass. Mario Kart 64 was slow and boring as shit. SNES Mario Kart was awesome because it had a better sense of speed. Everything since just hasn't captured that same feeling. They need to release the original on VC instead of that hick 64 game. Mario Kart DS was pretty good though. I thought DD was ok too, but no console MK has been any good for me since the SNES one and mainly because of the speed, more specifically the lack of it. I sure hope this doesn't suck.
Ditto on the snaking. While YES, it is a valid technique in MKDS, it sucked the fun out of it. Made it an entirely different game, much more laborious and less... fun. Turned the game into a sort of hybrid between Track & Field and Mario Kart.
They HAVE kept the sparks, I could tell that much, but I just hope it takes longer for them to trigger. I'd rather try to plan my turns to stay in powerslide for long enough to get a boost, than to have to waggle-and-boost constantly to stay with the pack.
Wow I almost can't believe someone didn't like Double Dash, I've been playing Mario Kart since the original and loved Double Dash as much as any of the others. MKDS was great too but I agree that snaking sucked the fun out of it. :(
I think it will be like Smash in a way... because there will be enough options to either play like you used to on the 64, or have a totally new experince like double dash.
Exactly, my feelings 100%. Everything after SNES Mario Kart has been a dissappointment, no sense of speed and no sense of weight in the karts.
SNES Mario Kart felt as if the karts were actually gripping the road and being held down by the weight of the karts, becuase of this, the controls felt tight and responsive.
Everything Mario Kart game after this went into weightless, floaty polygon world with huge open tracks that feel about as fast as Dreamcast loading times.
If I didn't know any better, I would start to think that Nintendo stumbled upon an amazing control set up for SNES Mario Kart, then they lost that secret formula and have been trying to rediscover it ever since.
motorcycles? um...ok. let's take those and put them into their own game, add...let's say...mace, a wrench, chains, bats, a tire iron, tazers. We'll call it. something. to. do. with. injury. and motorcyles.
how about...Road Rash
GET TO IT EA!!! gimme gimme gimme I can has 360 version plz
This is pretty obviously some footage from the Wii version, but I was pretty sure that I heard the Japanese guy say “Mario Kart DS” right at the beginning of the video...

I can't see them doing badly with this, anything with online capabilities will be awesome in my eyes.

That totally killed MKDS for me online - and I will not buy this one if snaking is in it.

i'm glad i'm not the only one who heard "do tricks to boost your speed" and immediately thought "uniracers"
looks like same old mario kart with a half-pipe thrown in..not very next gen
how about...Road Rash
GET TO IT EA!!! gimme gimme gimme I can has 360 version plz
Also, Mario Kart: DD is better than most people think and Mario Kart 64 is worst than most people remember. But Mario Kart DS is the pinicle.
