Mario is for guys in their fifties photo

It's not uncommon for people to say that Nintendo only makes games for kids, and that the Mario games in particular are kid-only experiences. For instance, Blur, an upcoming "realistic" racing game featuring missile launching race cars and giant explosions, has a new commercial that's all about how Mario Kart isn't for "big boys". That may or may not be the case, but what about "old men"? What games are for them?

Well, according to Shigeru Miyamoto, a +50 year old man, Mario games are made for him, and people like him. He states that Mario "wasn't a game only for children in the first place" and that when he makes a game he tries "to keep in mind that guys in their fifties will play it, too."

I've long been of the opinion that most people that don't like stuff because it's too "kiddie" are insecure adults, or are in fact kids themselves. Only kids and teenagers think smoking is cool, or that a games is truly "mature" just because it's rated "M". Most of the adults I know that smoke are quite desperate to quit, and would much rather play Mario Kart than Modern Warfare. As for me, I like Modern Warfare and Mario, but if I had to choose one over the other, Mario would win hands down.

I can't hang with Yoshi's Story though, but not because it's too kiddie. It's just sort of nauseating.

Miyamoto works hard to keep the writing in Mario games from being too childish- [Gonintendo]

Sounds like something that a stupid kid would say. "Man, Mario is for babies. I play Halo!"

I agree. I find most "M" rated games to still be hopelessly childish, and very few of them give me the excitement I get from playing games like Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart DS, or even Tetris.

Besides, we all know that every competitive shooter on a console is populated by children with irresponsible parents. I can't help but laugh when I hear a kid at the after school program I volunteer for say, "When I get home, I am going to play Pac-man or Modern Warfare 2."

Mario Galaxy wasn't for men over 50 or for kids. Going from the difficulty level it was created exclusively for brain damaged infants. From the early previews and reviews it sounds like they've corrected that error with the sequel.

Aside from the clear bias against smoking you chose to insert into your post, I agree with most of what was said. Judging the quality or value of a game based on its cover foolish. Assuming a style of game applies to "certain people" is condescending. Good games need to be made and people who enjoy them should enjoy them.

Is there any way to NOT have bias against smoking? Can you honestly argue that smoking deserves to be praised and held in high regards?

On topic: Mario is sweet and I will play his games till the end of time.

I think Mario is universal. I think where Shiggy is going at, is it should fit the "Simple but Complex" idea. It should be simple enough that anyone can play it, beat it, and love it. But it should also have content for the hardcore, like Luigi's Purple Coins. It's this concept that keeps Nintendo's games selling like hotcakes.

Also, Yoshi's Story was a headache. It should have been like SMW2.

Well I gotta say I kinda disagree with your assessment of people who find things "kiddie" though I think like alot of things it's more about what hits peoples radar that appeals to them. As far as games go I'm pretty much done with Mario. Which could have to do with the fact that I don't have a Wii.

However I am currently enjoying the hell out of 3D Dot Game Heroes because I like that kind of game. Being that I have a PS3 which has a bigger (than 360) selection I've tended to ignore the LBP's and Fat Princess' because as an adult I just prefer games that are more catered to my tastes.

OK, fine, I'll give Yoshi's Story another chance. I haven't player it since it first came out. After playing Yoshi's Island, my expectations were appropriately high, and were far from met.

If I go into it again with lowered expectations, maybe I'll enjoy it.

Total agreement on this, Holmes. Off the top of my head I can only think of a handful of M rated games that feel like they aren't primarily targeting the mindset of a 13 year old boy. I honestly feel a little silly whenever I play Gears of War around other people, just because it's so "mature". Sort of like reading an Image comic from the 90s, except anyone else who's in the room can see everything on the page.

In contrast, I've never felt the slightest twinge of embarrassment playing Mario, Zelda, or any of the other "childish" games that Nintendo makes.

Bad company 2 was a perfect example of this. The first was rated T and it was a great game but didnt sell so well, but the second did. they just threw in totally pointless curse words to push it over the M barrier.

I don't have much to add to this discussion but I feel compelled to say that I'm behind you 100% on people hating Mario/Pokemon/other Nintendo franchises because they're "childish." I just feel sorry for those who miss out on great games like Pokemon and Paper Mario because they feel compelled to maintain a facade of machismo or maturity or whatever.

@ Drybones- Oh, I played Yoshi's Island DS alright, and it definitely wasn't bad. I was particularly happy with how baby Donkey Kong turned out. Still, the old Yoshi's Island resonance just wasn't there.

Maybe it's time for a new Yoshi's Island that uses the Galaxy engine? The Raphael Raven fight would certainly work well with Galaxy's gameplay...

Actually, I was disapointed with Yoshi's Island DS. I had played the first one a few years before it came out, and while YIDS wasn't "bad", I was still let down by the overall experience. I've never played Yoshi's Story due to hearing about how much it sucks.

Mario is the shit. As for Yoshi's Story, it's a fun game but its definitely not of the same quality that Yoshi's Island was crafted from. Still, a fun and overly-cute game.

AdamantiumHip: I love God of War and Mario, and I can say without a doubt that Mario is the superior series. Think about it: If you take away the (admittedly awesome) violence and death of GoW, what are you left with? Would you enjoy the game as much if you just hit dudes and they fell down? No. The blood, setting, and graphics are just as important as the actual gameplay.

In Mario, it's just a bunch of brightly colored craziness with goombas to jump on, and yet the original games as well as the 3D ones are fun to this day. Honestly, I know that one day Kratos will be all but forgotten and Mario will still be there, jumping on people's heads and making me smile like a kid again.

@ Holmes: Yoshi's Story for the N64 was a bunch of bullshit and a total disappointment after the original Yoshi's Island, but it was far from nauseating. I'm thinking you mean the DS game, which gave me splitting headaches and me want to die every time I tried to play it. I hate that game. Nothing beats Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island for some good shy guy eating fun.

well I didnt mean to sound like I was BASHING it- there's nothing wrong with mario or nintendo. I mean as a kid I did love them- but now? I guess maybe it's me being a horror fan, but I like the darker, more violent stuff- and mario just doesn't appeal to me.

god of war is a huge, violent, epic, aimed at adults- mario is a platformer aimed at everyone with no real story. I love stories, I love violent videogames (dont we all?), I love gore in games- I admit it.

Im not saying there is anything wrong with liking mario- but for me personally, it feels like something I outgrew. Not in a disparaging way, obviously a lot of adults still like those games, but for me personally, they are more or less mementos from my childhood and nothing more.

I heartily LOL at anyone who thinks god of war is superior to mario.

You have an epic, crafted tale full of amazing characters and bosses in god of war, with the most brilliant combat ever- and in mario, you have a ...platformer. with no story. with kiddy visuals and characters. YAY.

Nah if thats how you think, thats up to you- it at least made me laugh to hear you say that though so thanks :)

@ AdamantiumHip- When I was a teenager, I absolutely LOVED huge violent epics. So did all my friends. These days, there has to be some comedy or parody injected into a game like that for me to stay interested. Otherwise, I feel like I'm playing a game made for a teenage version of me, and to me, teenagers are kids.

adamantiumhip: You're not getting the point. The fact that Mario is fun without a good story nor any good visual rewards for killing enemies is exactly what makes it superior to a game like God of War.

Of course it's your opinion and that's perfectly fine. I love violent games myself, and still get a thrill out of chopping people in half and shooting heads off too. It's OK.

But there is a reason more people play Mario than MW2 or God of War.

I didnt realise the douchebags had already crawled out....

Im a horror fan, I like nintendo and mario, I didnt like god of war because it was just plain fucking silly. People like you are normally around 17-22 and desperately trying to affirm that they are adults because they still play videogames.

I mean... Why grow up? You don't need to grow up. I have my own apartment with the GF and I still play mario, I still build Lego, I still build Meccano, I still collect figures and comics (as does the GF) and I still own and play more nintendo consoles than my 360, PS3 or PC. What does that make me? an Immature adult? because if it does then I really couldnt care, it's widely proven fact that people who go through life not really growing up end up a lot less stressed than people who are desperate to grow up, due to the fact that we roll with the punches and don't bother too much about bills and office work and the like.

I enjoy living those extra 10 years because I'm having fun in life instead of being a whining elitist.
