New to Super Mario Galaxy 2? Inherently stupid? Nintendo has you covered! Super Mario Galaxy 2 will come with a tutorial DVD that explains everything you need to know about the plumber's latest extraterrestrial adventure.
The tutorial will tell you how to use the remote and nunchuck, how to interact with Starbits and how to navigate the universe. Of course, because the Wii is the Wii, this DVD won't actually work on the system itself, which is kind of funny when you think about it.
Regardless of the fact that it doesn't run on the Wii, what do you think about the idea of a tutorial DVD? A good idea? Does a game of this nature actually need it? Will Nintendo still include prompts during the game itself? It's an interesting idea and appeals to the user-friendly nature of Wii games, but I'm sure most people won't be struggling too hard in this particular instance.
Now, when Atlus starts packing DVDs with its games, we can definitely talk...

Also, WTF can't Nintendo encode the video as some kind of format that their console will execute? You'd think they would have some options on a machine that plays video games.
This just smacks of half-assery.
NIS gets award for game I will never complete 100%(i.e. Disgaea 3, etc)
That said, it's rather hilarious the DVD doesn't run on their system lol. What a bunch of lazies... Time for me to get back to modding my Wii so it actually gets some use.
external tutorial materials == bad game design
So, I can understand Nintendo trying to help out the little tikes who will get their hands on this game later. Probably should've had it available via WiiWare though.

People who aren't gonna use it bitch and moan about it...
Crap Im too late.
seriously why does nintendo have to treat people like idiots or market to idiots
I think Nintendo has just shown a history of trying to pretend its game discs are some sort of crazy moon format that can't be read by other drives, and letting the Wii play normal dvds would work against that.
Besides, the DVD's clearly for advertising. Better for it to find its way to people who don't have Wii's and into their old DVD players, right? Target audience...
To be fair, Sony was first to do moon format discs, with the whole black disc idea.
Is there bonus content on the tutorial DVD that we don't know about?
And as Super Drybones mentioned, is Nintendo preparing a stealth activation of DVD playback or will the disc work like the Netflix one?
Still stupid as hell and redundant.
as for the SMG2 situation.. i wonder why they didnt just put the videos on the dvd with a wii application wrapper(ie.. make it an actual "wii game", except all the game would do is play/control the video). Or better yet.. embed the video on their website and include a slip of paper telling you to go to nintendo.com/smg2 (or whatever) for tutorials.
This isn't as far out of an idea as people are claiming.
Or my Wii, since it's already had the shit hacked out of it. :-P
Still, I'll be checking out the tutorial DVD on my DVD player... always wondered how to make Mario jump.
If Nindo REALLY wanted to go the instructional video route, they should just post some videos on their website. The game could launch the Wii's browser and play the videos right there.
Or on a Wii compatible disc period?
I think a patch is possible though. Any Wii with custom firmware can play DVDs.
Next thing you know they're going to teach us how to wash our hands:P
I like it. Kinda reminds me of the folks that try to piss of Nintendo fans by playing Pokemon on a PSP.
Hopefully they went with a DVD because the game disc itself is so packed full of content that they couldn't fit a tutorial, and not because they doubt the audience's ability to put a game disc in the Wii and load it.
"I think a patch is possible though. Any Wii with custom firmware can play DVDs."
I actually didn't know that.
Come to think of it, I know next to nothing about my Wii, tech-wise. Probably because I don't really think of it as a "tech device", but rather "a white box that plays Mario games old and new".
