Mario creator Miyamoto teases a new game character photo

When Nintendo throws a shareholder meeting and its band of ever-vigilant public relations folk allow Shigeru Miyamoto to say what's on his mind, you know we're in for a treat.

First, a long-sought-after response to the question "what exactly is the deal with Pikmin 3?" The famed designer had this to say: "Amongst the present promises, I have to finish Pikmin quickly, so production is progressing extremely well."

As an adamant fan of Pikmin, that's good to hear. I'd much rather be shown something, anything, but what can you do? Moving on to the other major topic of interest at hand, Miyamoto danced around the idea of coming up with a new character for Nintendo.

"It's been nearly 10 years since I made the Pikmin character, so I feel this is the year where I must at long last make a new character. This is as far as I'll answer today." He also mentioned how he has picked up swimming -- take that for what you will.

I'm totally cool with a giant cat as a new character.

It's funny to me that Miyamoto is treated like some sort of oracle or magician. That little quote sounds so mystical and deliberately cryptic

He has 'picked up swimming'? Do you mean taken up swimming?

Pikmin's pretty dull, Miyamoto needs to get his ass on a FEW new original IPs - specially how Zelda looks like crap and all.

Please don't tell me one of the bosses in Pikmin 3 will be a huge, fluffy kitty, Miyamoto. Please! Also, I could care less about whatever swimming character he can create, THIS ARTICLE IS ALL ABOUT PIKMIN 3!!2!!@12@@1!

Remember, Pikmin came about after Miyamoto said he was an avid gardener. Just sayin' 'bout that swimming bit.

My goodness do I want Pikmin 3, especially after seeing how well Pikmin NPC played on Wii.

It's my chief complaint about Nintendo. While 90% of their first party titles are fun/well made, they hardly ever dip into the originality department. Pretty much all their stuff out now, you could find on Gamecube.

I'm also hoping the 3DS will innovate a bit more than "waggle" did.

Pikmin 3=yes please! And seeing how so many of his creations are based on his free time, I'd say him picking up swimming is pretty interesting.

As a huge Nintendo fan, I really never cared for Pikmin. :/

I'd definitely prefer a brand new IP over Pikmin 3.

@Magnalon:

This is an interesting one. I've heard lots of people say this, but I don't think it's quite true. Mario galaxy doesn't play like 64 (or Sunshine) on a mechanic level, even though the feelings the experience gives are the same and most of the controls are similar. Something similar is true of Zelda: Spirit Tracks vs. Twilight Princess vs. Wind Waker. Metroid Prime doesn't play like Super Metroid, and the list goes on.

So is it the character and brand people are talking about here? Is it the story not changing much (which is mostly window dressing in almost all of N's franchises anyway)? Is it the feelings they get from the games? I'd actually be interested in knowing this.

It amazes me what a low bar people set for developers. A new IP alone doesn't change the world, it just gives you a new story or character, if those are even new at all. Its meaningless without the gameplay experience being remarkable and new.

Miyamoto always has fun new ideas with not only each new character he creates, but each new iteration of the franchises he creates or works on.

Most people are just content with developers that slap a new character on an existing genre that does nothing new. Yet they get all angsty about Nintendo not making a new IP. Those people just like buying stuff, they don't give a shit about new ideas.

@The Silent Protagonist I Totally Agree With You most of the Nintendo games that have been released are more original than and funner...than most games i played with new Ip's and characters.

Uhm...I don't know what's up with people bashing Nintendo for not enough originality...
Ok.They reused the same characters for a zillion times,but they always changed up the gameplay.
Also *cough* Gears of Modern Bad Company 4 original.I heard no one complaining.

!!! Excited. We need more Smash Bros contestants.

Isn't Chibi Robo their newest character? I thought that landed after Pikmin.

In any case, I'll make no predictions, but non-human is a plus and I demand Awesome.

@GunRun
Giant Cat sounds amazing.

@Electrium
but... but Echo! Sure, he's Sega property, but we've already got a dolphin. Not saying Nintendo couldn't do it better.

New Miyamoto-made character? That can only end in greatness. And yes, I expect something water-related. Last time Miyamoto mentioned one of his hobbies (gardening), we got Pikmin.

This definitely excites me. Think of every fun water level you've played by Nintendo then think "INNOVATIVE," since Miyamoto is ALWAYS thinking that, as we've seen. =]

I thought Nintendo wanted Miyamoto to stop talking about his hobbies publicly, haha.

It would be nice if Nintendo bought the rights from Sega for Ecco The Dolphin. Nintendo would re-revolutionize sea creature/water gameplay, but make Ecco a star again (if he was one in the first place).

Nintendo already has an all-water game series: Starfy.
They could certainly make another that plays entirely differently though.

It still KILLS me how everyone complains about Nintendo's "tired old same IPs" blah, blah, blah. It amazes me that everyone bags on Nintendo's franchises but loves Killzone, Halo, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, etc, etc, etc. Everyone seems to forget that the video game industry is based on popular franchises. Everyone does it. EVERYONE. The difference is that Nintendo's franchises sell equally or better than everyone else's franchises without being "hardcore" games. It's like getting beat up by the nerdy kid at school.

@masterjedi- To be fair on MGS though, it's gameplay has evolved beyond it's original format. That, of course, does not excuse anyone from bashing on Nintendo products. At least this will make those people shut up. Yahtzee too >>
