Mario 64 once had a co-op mode photo

Impish game designer Shigeru Miyamoto is certainly cock-of-the-walk these days with his New Super Mario Bros. Wii and all the four-player chicanery it contains, but it's taken the guy twelve years to get this far. The elven legend has been talking about Mario 64, and how that classic game once tried to do co-op.

"The screen was split and they went into the castle separately," said Miyamoto, talking about how Mario and Luigi were meant to play together. "When they meet in the corridor, I was incredibly happy! Then there was also the mode where the camera is fixed and we see Mario running away, steadily getting smaller and smaller.

"That was a remnant of an experiment we did where Mario and Luigi would run away from each other but you could still see them both. But we were unable to pull it off."

Only a fool could not love Luigi, so it's a shame that this never really worked out. It would have made capturing that annoying frigging rabbit about a hundred times easier, at any rate.

Say WAHT!!!?? What Miyamoto has to say about my poor brother agonizing to play in front of the tele in 1997? I think we would've killed for a coop mode in Mario 64.

It would have been great to see Two Player Mario 64 or maybe Galaxy. Hell even Sunshine might have been a lot more bearable if you could have two players gathering those god damned blue coins.

Luigi's always been my favorite. It's been a blast playing as him in Mario Wii. I know he plays no different from Mario and you could play with him before as P2 in other Marios, but it just makes me happy that's all.

they also wanted to add coop? Super Mario 64 was too revolutionary already.

@Xero - I loved Sunshine but those were just bloody annoying.

I wish this had actually been the case, but what is up with that screenshot?

Well, damn! Surely the idea could've been given life if the game were to ever have a second chance on a system packing more horsepower.

I can't see it fitting into the current SM64. It wouldn't really change anything. I wonder how different the game was when they were planning co-op.

Why does this look familiar? Oh yeah, because it was the multiplayer mode of SM64DS!

Luigi creeps me out since I've seen his "Mating Dance" in Super Smash Bros Brawl. :-S

Yes. Those blue coins were a bitch... I still haven't found them all, nor do I think I ever will. Still, Sunshine was one solid platform title.

Could you imagine?! Super Mario 64 would have been sweet with Luigi co-op! Man, I've dreamed of a co-op Mario experience(besides Mario Bros.) since Super Mario 2(USA) and Super Mario 64. New Super Mario Bros. Wii has delivered, yet I'd love to see Mario Bros. co-op in a 3D world... Someday, no doubt, it will happen.
