Mario 25th anniversary site is awesome, has wallpapers photo

Last week, while in Tokyo, I was watching the little monitors on the train that constantly loop commercials. One from Nintendo was really great. It was a Japanese living room, bathed in afternoon sunlight. A boy switches on an old TV and sets it to channel 3. He blows off a Famicom cart and plugs it in. It's Super Mario Bros. The whole thing was lovely and kind of stirred my gamer soul. The commercial ended with the 25th Anniversary logo for Mario, which made me think (in this order):

  1. Wow, that's amazing. 25 years...
  2. Holy sh*t, I'm old!

There's now a 25th Anniversary site for Mario at Nintendo Japan, and it has been updated with a lot of cool stuff. First off, there's a really cool Super Mario History section that profiles all the Mario games to date, complete with clips. Poking around the CM section will let you see the commercial I was talking about. Finally, there's a new wallpaper section with some really great selections. My favorite is the one pictured above. More are coming soon, so check back.

Happy Birthday, Mario. Here's to 25 more years!

"Bah! Mario. The most overrated virtual character of all history." - BS go kill yourself troll.

Anyways, isn't this false regardless? Mario is older than 25! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donkey_kong - Born in 1981. That makes him 29. Is Mario getting so old that he's lying about his age?

I guess you could argue that DK wasn't the first Mario Brothers game, and I guess you could argue he was technically named Jumpman on release of DK.

Still - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_Brothers
Mario Brothers came out in 1983. I have a hard time saying Mario Brothers isn't a real Mario game while Super Mario Brothers is....

Though it's hardly a unique story, its still neat knowing that Mario is a character I've grown up with and started my journey in gaming with.

I love that commercial, by the way. It makes me feel very nostalgic!

World 2 isn't a Mario game. It's Yoshi. I know that's still in the Mario universe, but it's not a Mario game. Yoshi's Island is a separate, awesome series (even if Story blows).

Mario's parents were real dicks; I mean, who gives a child the same first and last name?

Man, you took my response awfully seriously. Have you never been to the internet? It's this great place filled with a series of tubes. I highly recommend trying it out some time.

@killias2: It's 25 years because it's the anniversary of Super Mario Bros.
It'd be 29 if it were for just Mario the character.

Mario is ALWAYS a fun time, and here's hoping for another 25 years of awesome. :D

True, it does say Super Mario explicitly. IMO, still kind of bs-y though. It's like saying it's the 20th anniversary of Mega Man 3 (which it is, btw).

does nintendo want a cake or a blowjob? it would be nice to see these asshole corpoations celebrating the consumer that supports their product for 25+ years. but instead, we should go out and buy whatever they say we should buy to give them more money to spend on wallpapers.

Hell ya Sunshine is right in the middle grabbing all the attention, glorious Mario Sunshine forever.

Best Mario game ever, and no one will convince me otherwise.

Sunshine was an underrated gem. Although not my favorite... Hmmmm. I don't believe I can ever name my favorite Mario game. I mean, I love them all at different times in my life for different reasons.

I'm never getting rid of my Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros. 1/2/3 for the NES. I may very well request them to be buried with me.
