Marathon: Durandal port should come with Dramamine photo

Bungie's classic Mac first-person shooter Marathon: Durandal is now available for download on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace. A mere 800 points nabs you this Freeverse-made remake, souped up in high-definition. It's just too bad that they didn't include a barf bag in the bundle.

That's not to say that Marathon: Durandal isn't fun. It's actually a great retro blast for the few minutes before the head-splitting dizzyness and lunch-tossing queasiness sets in. Gamers are complaining of motion sickness, and the game's ultra-fluid frame rate of 60 frames per second probably has something to do with it. The folks at NeoGAF are even running a forum poll to see how many members are tossing their cookies due to the dizzying gameplay.

This blogger's experience is similar to other reports - it makes me sick. Demoing it on a 60" LCD had me clutching my stomach within minutes. I tried moving the system to a 42" and even 24" screen, all with similar results. Fudging with the sensitivity settings did help a bit, but when quick turning corners and corridors came up, the motion sickness came right back.

Let us know your experiences with the title. Download it and give it a test run, and then come back here to tell us how your stomach and head held up.

[Thanks, TheGoldenDonut]

No problem here. Only problem I've noticed is that I've been playing a lot of FPSs lately

I agree with BahamutZero about the cheeseburger hotpocket. But anyways the game never made me sick. Never been sick while playing a game.

Whoa, no way, you get dizzy from this game too? I have NEVER had it happen to me while playing ANY other game. Also, I simply don't get motion sickness. I've never even been sea-sick. I don't know what is with this game. I didn't get sick while playing, just dizzy. But I only played the super short demo.

Although, the game is kind of fun. Its not really worth $10.

Marathon has always had funny motion physics. And yes, I was definitely getting a little sick playing it. More than that though, does anyone else think that the game has really choppy animations? In HD, it looks good, but the character animations are not even as smooth as in DOOM. Dunno, just seems that way to me.

Only FPS to make me motion sick are Goldeneye and 007 Agend Under Fire. Marathon doesn't have James Bond in it, so maybe I'll be ok.

Played on a 9 inch SDTV about 3 feet away.

I have never gotten motion sickness from a game before, and I've played FPS and racing games for over 15 years. This game made me brutally sick to my stomach in just a few minutes. Yes, there is a problem.

I read somewhere that putting camera bob on will make the effects a lot less. I have yet to try that though.

I used to get sick playing the old FPS like DOOM but this has been OK for me(still get a slight nausea if I run around really fast down some really tight corridors so I just try to avoid that). I found that one of the reasons I got sick was because I was playing really close to a PC monitor so I think that is a big factor. If you arent so close and can see the rest of your room around you then it helps with the motion sickness. Don't play in total darkness either turn on a light so you can see your surroundings. Also I found the camera bob feature did help.

NOW WITH 50% MORE Vomit inducing visuals!

I'd love to see a game with that sticker on the cover.

You guys sold me on this game, I played the series on a Mac IIvx back in the day, but there was no way it ran any faster than about 15 - 18 fps in a small 320x240 window.

I've never gotten motion sickness from playing a game, so I'm super excited to try this game out. If for a measly $10 I too could have a projectile vomiting good time I'm in!!

I've never had motion sickness from any games, and this isn't any exception. It didn't kind of mess up my aim, though. I'm used to plaything this game on the junky old iBook I lug around when I go on trips, not at a perfect 60fps with HD and all.

I do know a few friends that got kind of queasy watching me play, though, and they're not sissy-girly-men. Dif'ent strokes for dif'ent folks.

I've never had that happen so it's hard for me to understand how people get motion sickness from games. The only time I ever had that happen was the first time I ever played Super Mario 64, when it was released that Christmas long ago. My brother-in-law got the N64 and I played that Christmas day at my sister's house for like 5 hours straight. I was dizzy and had "vertigo" for like 3 days afterwards. Basically it's like when you spin around really fast and then stop and everything keeps turning in your vision since your equilibrium is all messed up. Other than that, DOOM, Half-Life, Halo etc I've never gotten motion sickness. Maybe I'll give Marathon a go.
