Many people playing World of Warcraft, and by 'many' we mean 11 freakin' million photo

OK, Activision Blizzard, we get it -- a whole bunch of people are playing PC/MAC mega-MMO World of Warcraft.

Today, the publisher has announced that the subscribership (is that even a word?) for World of Warcraft has exceeded 11 million players worldwide. Since debuting in November of 2004, that means 11 million people have handed over the credit card information to Activision Blizzard or have redeemed a pre-paid card to trawl around Azeroth.

If you're not playing World of Warcraft yet, don't worry -- you eventually will. Activision Blizzard will stop at nothing to make everyone in the known universe a subscriber. The game is available in more regions than you could count on one hand: North America, Europe, Macau, Hong Kong, and Chile ... just to name a few.

Activision Blizzard will continue their quest towards world Internet and MMO domination on November 13 when the game's new expansion, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Litch King, hits stores.

World of Warcraft(R) Surpasses 11 Million Subscribers Worldwide
Anticipation continues to mount for Wrath of the Lich King(TM) expansion as Blizzard Entertainment(R)'s massively multiplayer online role-playing game reaches new milestone

IRVINE, Calif., Oct 28, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. announced today that the subscribership for World of Warcraft(R), its award-winning massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), now exceeds 11 million players worldwide. This milestone was reached as the beta test for Wrath of the Lich King(TM), World of Warcraft's second expansion, nears completion. Wrath of the Lich King will launch in several regions around the world starting on November 13.

"It's been very rewarding to see gamers around the world continue to show such strong support for World of Warcraft," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment(R). "We remain fully committed to responding to that enthusiasm with a high-quality, constantly evolving game experience."

Since debuting in North America on November 23, 2004, World of Warcraft has become the most popular MMORPG around the world. It was the bestselling PC game of 2005 and 2006 worldwide, and finished behind only World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade(R), the first expansion pack for the game, in 2007.(1) In addition to being the bestselling PC game of 2007 in both North America and Europe, The Burning Crusade holds the record for fastest-selling PC game of all time, with nearly 2.4 million copies sold in its first 24 hours of availability and approximately 3.5 million in its first month.

World of Warcraft was recently launched in Russia and Latin America, and is currently available in eight languages. In addition to North America and Europe, the game is played in mainland China, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Chile, Argentina, and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau.

To keep pace with the continued growth of World of Warcraft as well as development on other Blizzard Entertainment games, the company is currently hiring for numerous open positions. More information on available career opportunities at Blizzard Entertainment can be found at www.blizzard.com/jobs.

World of Warcraft's Subscriber Definition

The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees' territories are defined along the same rules.

I'll never go back. WoW is just too much of a grindfest for me.

I've never played WoW before. Mostly because I know that I'd get addicted to the game and mostly because I've seen how the game changes my friends and roommates. Mostly...

I'm done with the game, and have been for some time now.\

I'd rather get addicted to the next Diablo game, where simply playing the game is a reward for the time spent.

As much as it's the hip thing to hate on Wow, 11 million subscribers says something about the quality of the game

Played for more than 2 years, quit last year. Never looked back. Someone here said before that the game puts you in a stasis, you don't feel great or bad while playing it, you're just there doing something, and I agree. Yea I had some fun times, but since the game has no end its just an endless grind. I still have friends that play a lot, its interesting how the dynamic of the friendship changed when I stopped playing.

such great memories playing this back in 05. what a game, i know its cool and hip to rip on it, but when you get stuck into it with a few mates, it really is an amazing thing blizzard have created. not a fan of the whole pay to play thing but if any game deserved to be the first breakthrough for MMOs WoW is the one.

Me and the wife play about 2-3 times a week during the evening after the kiddo is asleep.
I'm glad to hear some level headed people comment on the game instead of the typical bashing from the bandwagon.

protip: if it's not fun, don't play it. it's your money, go buy a hooker or something. Also, if you really are "addicted" I'd suggest unplugging, changing out your colostomy bag and then seeking help.

Played it for 2 weeks as a free trial but didn't like it. I now play Guild Wars and various free MMOs instead.

Nice to see that people are not just saying just "ZOMG WOW IS THE SUXOR!" 11 million subscribers is truly amazing and it really speaks on how amazing World of Warcraft. I quit a year or so ago about 3 months before the Burning Crusade was released. But I'm thinking of getting back into it soon, especially since I recruited someone so as soon as they buy their first month, I get a free month, which is probably enough to hook me again.

idk...kept me from spending tons of money on games and other media, 15 bucks /mo is pretty good considering that i'm not spending $60 bucks every other week for a new video game.

I play WoW until I get bored, then I unsubscribe. I've unsubscribed/resubscribed WoW at least ten times now since it was released, but right now I'm in that stage where I'm having fun playing it. I think WoW is a great game in moderation, but I can't get into it like some of these hardcore raider types can.

"Subscribership" is not a word.

Did they really say that?

...Is it just me or did they announce the EXACT SAME NUMBER for Burnin Crusade...

i'm going to check for the articles but i'm fairy certain it was 11 million...

Anyway I play WoW, I wouldn't say it puts me in a state, logging on and raiding with a core group of 25 friends is awesome, it's like being on a sports team, but I was never good with sports, I am good at WoW, so when my team downs a major boss I feel accomplished and badass...

...also if you say WoW is boring go watch a video of the Kael fight... I shit my pants

They're gonna have to suck until I pay them to stop if they want me playing that god damn game. I tried...TWICE, and couldn't get into it.

i miss WoW. had to wipe my hard drive and my "copy" of WoW was exactly that. Granted, I never played the retail servers.. I don't see how people can stand all the slow ass leveling and grinding

hood i feel for u, the retail servers were immense in the fact u had to take months to level up, it was like a journey. i dont think id have such good memories of the game if i went from level 1 to 60 in 2 days

I wish people would stop comparing every MMO to WoW. Yes it got much more popular than anything before it and probably won't be repeated again, but not only because of its gameplay. It's a phenomenon like Pokemon and Halo.

Wake me up when MMOs take a step forward. I've only been waiting 10 years.
