Manhunt 2 is banned here in America too photo

The bad news keeps piling up for Rockstar and Manhunt 2. GamePolitics asked analyst Michael Pachter to see what he thinks Rockstar needs to do to save their asses and not have another Hot Coffee on their hands:

I had estimated [Manhunt 2 would generate] around $25 million in revenues for this quarter, plus around $15 million in reorders.  It’s not clear to me whether Take-Two will:

1) ship the game as is;

2) re-cut the game and try to have the UK ban/US AO rating lifted;

3) cancel the game.

Unfortunately for Rockstar, they only have 2 options now. Nintendo and Sony have both stated today that they will not allow an AO rated game to play on their respective consoles. Seeing as how the game is banned in crumpet and tea land, and now more or less here, Rockstar has to either redo the game or just cancel it. Either way, this will undoubtedly hurt Rockstar financially.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go catch Hostel 2.

[Thanks F1tches and Magesx]

Does Sony know I can play pornographic DVDs on my PS2? Well I can and do. I can also send pornographic pictures to my Wii, OMG!!!!?!?

They shouldn't have a say of what game is released.

Is it me or does the banning pretty much negate the reason we have the ESRB in the first place? I mean the ratings are there to show parents what games are meant for a younger audience and what games aren't. If you are just going to ban whatever the hell you like to ban, then what is the fucking point of a rating system? I am not a Manhunt fan but this is, for lack of a better phrase, "retarded as shit."

I personally found the original Manhunt to be a very solid title. I applaud Rockstar for continually raising the bar for adult oriented games. Games like these were originally geared toward adults who like slasher films, and I felt that Manhunt replicated better than anything else that came at that time. If it's an issue about a sex or rape scene, people should realize that games are NOT the only negative influence on people. The media needs to stop bullying Rockstar every time they release a new title.

Someone made a good point. You can join the army at 16 and learn to kill human beings. Then I think it's 18 when you can be sent on the battlefield. So you can participate in war but you can't play a video game?

ok, who broke destructoid? I refreshed 10 times, and waited half an hour trying to see the comments, and instead seeing white.

well, although I wasn't really going to play manhunt, there's something wrong with the world when content can just be BANNED. Apparently, today's society thinks that if a group of people get pissed off enough, then it's automatically OK to ban content. Like that book, "Vamos a Cuba" or Manhunt 2.

if it really was so bad, make up a new rating: 21+
just don't outright ban it.

however, I do see why they would ban it in the UK. I mean, although censorship is wrong, some people are fully aware that if it was released, some parent will buy it for their kid without even looking at the box, and that the adult rated content will eventually reach kids. Censorship is still wrong though.

Nintendo will allow shitty games/ports on their consoles..but not a (probably) decent game that will definitely stir revenue? I think that deserves a ride on the short bus.

This is getting stupid. While I want to respect the rights of console makers to say what types of rated games are allowed on their systems, I think that they need to re-evaluate their thinking on this. The "Mario Generation" has grown up and I think it's about time we are allowed access to AO content (and i'm not talking some stupid Virtual Valerie crap) on consoles now that they have "Parental block controls". Stop holding our hands! If we are old enough to choose to smoke, drink, and go to war, then I believe we should be able to choose our entertainment as well.

@ Rosseh: nice!

You know what happens to things that are banned right? People want to know what was so bad about them and eventually find a way to read, hear, watch them. Rockstar should just release an M version, and after sales have died down a little, then maybe an unedited version can leak its way into the intertubes somehow...

Didn't Sony just let Gran Theft Auto: San Andreas sell even after it was rerated to AO? Sure, it was rereleased as M, but the AO game was still sold, even if it was hard to find. Why would they allow that and not this all of a sudden? I would expect Nintendo to do something like this, but not Sony...

So it is not ok for a violent game on the Wii but it is ok to have a porn-like DS game where you touch little girls with the stylus who don't look over the age of 10 (pre-teen) in order to remove their clothing....you know, to find out if they are a witch or not.

That is ok, pretty much endorsing pedofilia, go Nintendo!

Does any one know the ratings that Postal or Postal 2 have? I ask this because AO games seem to be treated as pornography, as in "lacking moral or artistic value." If Postal got a M rating, then how can the ESRB justify the AO rating given to Manhunt 2? Postal is one of the most immoral products I have ever seen, lacking any form of artistic merit and truly fitting the mold of the AO rating. The Manhunt series at least attempts the presentation of horror cinema, a genre which is not seen as pornographic in our popular culture.

Didn't they make the AO rating for a reason? Can we just use the AO rating for once? One little AO game isn't going to cause World War 3 or little Jimmy going over to the neighbors house to rape little Cindy.

just got done watching [sic]o, and i'm ready to take on the world. how about we flood the playstation blog with a polite call to reason. i know we all wanted the wii version, but it should be a step easier to get it allowe back into the playstation family. tell them we won't let them get bullied around. after that we move onto the nintedo forums or anyplace nintendo related that will cause the greatest stir.

i'd give up my wii, as mentioned above, but it isn't mine to donate. [:

So there's a sex scene in the game, which is (most likely) why it received the AO rating.
Theoretically, if they remove the sex scene, or at least censor it out, the game can be released as M, right?

I don't know about you guys, but I don't mind missing a video game sex scene. Or if they have to leave it in for the storyline (lol), I don't mind not seeing anything.

Haha. That would be such irony though. Movies like Hostel shy away from showing violence, so that they can keep an R rating, but the first half hour of the film is basically a softcore porn. Manhunt 2 has to shy away from the porn aspect to (hopefully) retain an M rating.

Why the fuck then have the ESRB make an AO rating and not have any of the games put on any consoles?! Are they that worried about kids getting their hands on adult games?!They can get free porn on X tube with no problem, let alone refusing them the same violence thats on the fucking news!

Oh, and a few things:

One: For those who say that the A0 rating probably comes from a sex scene, can someone show me proof that there was gonna be a sex scene in the game?

Two: If the scene in question wasn't a rape scene, then why would that get the game slapped with an AO rating? I mean, MH2 wouldn't be the first game to have a sex scene (Custer's Revenge.Playboy The Mansion.Singles. Any of those ring any bells?)

I am adimantly against a government or an independent NGO banning any media.

However, if Nintendo and Sony don't wan't to publish it that is their choice. I posted very strongly worded comments about the ban. Taketwo should digitally distribute it online if they want to really keep the art of the game or dumb it down and sell it

If you really care send a letter/email to sony and/or nintendo.

It's true, this is just the entertainment industry lobbying to put pressure on gaming. I remember going to see the remake of Texas Chainsaw a few years back, there was like 20 kids (with parents) in the theater.

I think Parents are more educated than ever now a days, geez I want to play this game now more than ever thanks to all these bannings. Only other game I can think about right now is "Thrill Kill" which to this day is still available via bootleg sources.

I wasn't gonna get the game til it got an AO rating. I wonder if that's what Rockstar intended all along?

(No, duaa...)
