Manhunt 2 before and after: neutered edition? photo

As the October release date slowly creeps ever so closer, a select few of us have been quietly keeping tabs on Rockstar's controversial Manhunt sequel on the Wii, waiting for word of exactly how toned down the finished game is going to be. According to a comparison by Matt Casamassina of IGN, it's nothing to take to the streets and riot about. As Matt puts it, the AO and M-rated games are surprisingly similar, minus a testicle or two:

"When we first wrote about Manhunt 2, we referenced a particularly nasty death sequence, in which Danny could use a pair of pliers to literally rip the testicles off a hunter. That murder has been completed removed from the updated build of the game. Not a big deal for us, as it only amounts to one kill out of dozens."

Not to usher in a dose of buzzkill to those of you that looked forward to a few good rounds of testicular torture, but I don't think any of us are going to miss that aspect of the game a whole heck of a lot -- unless you happen to be an estranged wife on the downswing of a pretty nasty divorce. The rest of us could probably do without. On a more sour note, there is one thing they mentioned in the preview that does sound like it could be a detractor of an otherwise "interesting" game. It sounds like Rockstar decided that introducing a little blurriness is the best way to get the game past the critics. Question is, does it detract from the gameplay, or are some things just better left unseen?

"The biggest and most disappointing change relates to the major death strikes. In the AO-rated build of Manhunt 2, we could clearly see these over-the-top and horrific animations. In the M-rated version, Rockstar has added both an extreme blur effect and in most cases darkened the graphics so that it is nearly impossible to make any sense of what is going on. Players will be able to see character movement, blood splatters, and sometimes they may catch a glimpse of an identifiable action, but mostly it's guesswork - a garbled, motiony mess that's far less satisfying."

On the plus side, IGN reports that everything else about the game seems to have remained unchanged, and they still feel that Manhunt 2 is as fun and as gross as ever, regardless of the edits

[Thanks Justin]

Mr. Bobbit will be happy to hear this.

personally, I'm just happy the game is coming out. The cuts they made don't seem too important, and I think the game can still be just as effective.

Good times, just over a month-and-a-half to go.

I'm someone who LOVED the original Manhunt. But I will not be playing this game. When I first heard Manhunt was getting a sequel I was not as excited as I should have been. The cast of hunters in the original game were just too awesome to top again. And now stuff like this...

DO NOT WANT.

What!!! No ripping off of testicles with pliers!!!

Can't believe Rockstar allowed the artistic values of the game to become so compromised. cough, gag, wheez

Censorship for the fail. Even if they only took out a couple ridiculous deaths its still not what the dev team wanted and that makes me sad. Even if i wasn't going to touch this game just the fact they had to pander to the needs of the man gets me all pissed off in different ways.

Also, testicles.

So...the guy's still doing unspeakable acts, but you can't see any of it. Great compromise.

Sounds like what happened with the Punisher game a few years back, they made all the death scenes turn black and white and the camera panned away. The Punisher was still a fun game but it would have been nice to actualy see that drill bit go through random thug's eyeball.

I'm fairly sure I already made a Bob Barker joke on someone's clog, so I'll just sit here and look pretty.

"the cuts don't seem important"? Oh you mean the part where the action is blurred so you can't see what the fuck is going on? Rockstar sucks balls.

yeah so we couldn't get this here R rating on jenna loves rocco, so we went ahead and just muffled the sex sounds to sound like happy kittens, placed a filter on the sex scenes so it looks like your watching scrambled cable, and replaced the money shot with a musical number.

personally i don't think it takes away from our original vision at all.

I actually played (and beat) the first manhunt on the Xbox and that shit was glorious and gorious (wordsmithed on the fly).

My question is this:
In the first game you stabbed people in the eyes with broken glass, suffocated them w/ plastic bags, etc...On the Wii will the kills like this be done by motion, i.e. will I be stabbing peoples eyes out in fun stabbing motion?

If so, "super-awesome-Tom-Cruise-blue-jeans"
If not, ...I'll play it anyway

@galagabug: you must work for the ratings people helping to figure out ways to get a lower rating, that was classic.

a friend of a friend of a friend, has the uncut leak and from what i've seen even those kill scenes are pretty fuzzy and blurry. alot of times it seems they use too close of a camera angle allowing gory action to fall out of frame, still nerve racking none the less.

Ummm...yeah but do we really need MAXIMUM graphic violence in video games? I mean...we aint homicidal psychopaths right?

Right?

Notice how the violence is the only thing anyone is talking about this game, the only thing people are getting all excited over. Not the level design, character acting, storyline...You know the other stuff that's suppose to make a game good.

I still think they should scrap the whole project and remake it as a collectable card game.

mauer: You mean this kill?

I took that quite a few years ago. Glad I could finally put it to use. :) I used to have an Xbox with the uncensored version of The Punisher that someone made a patch for. Worked pretty well, minus a couple small glitches like blood on the face and such.

el moco: You'll bleed out pretty quickly, even if you get your scrotum slashed. Pretty messy shit.

Lame. Hopefully there will be a patch or some way of changing it back. I just don't feel right knowing that it was changed.
