Outside of the Game Boy Micro, I feel Nintendo has done a pretty great job of designing and selling iterations of the Game Boy that have left its predecessors in the dust.
I was happy to see the fat body and spinach colors of the original Game Boy eventually give way to the Game Boy Color. And as much as I loved the Game Boy Advance, I never looked back when I picked up the Game Boy Advance SP on its launch day.
That wasn't good enough for Michael "Bibin" Moffitt, who decided to mod his Game Boy Pocket with a backlight ... instead of just buying a Game Boy Light on eBay. Or just picking up the aforementioned GBA SP.
I'm not going to be pretend to understand what possessed him to do this, but you have to hand it to him for his impressive engineering prowess. It looks nice in the dark, and Moffitt says that the Game Boy Pocket fitted with his custom light sees no noticeable change in battery life (two AAA batteries).
Great job, Mike -- I certainly couldn't do it. Though I'll be right over here playing Tetris on my very rechargeable, extremely bright GBA SP, sir.
You can see more images here.
Also, check out the tv the clock is sitting on.
Also, he should have modded a Gameboy Color. I'm pretty positive the GBL couldn't play GBC games.
it can?
Works like this: Certain Gameboy Color games work on the original Gameboy. Look for the Gameboy Color games that are in the black cartridges, or the different color cartridges, but still look like the orignal cartridges. The GBC carts that are larger and say "Game Boy Color" can only be played on GBC and up.
Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Advance SP can play the majority of all Gameboy series games. Including a lot of Original GB Games. Including GBC and GBA
The Micro and the DS can only play GBA games.
but I must say that the 3 columns of light that this results in ( bright on the left, dark in the middle, bright on the right ) are a bit of a downer on the whole project...
Shove a decent flash cart in the micro, there's your GB and GBC games. Same with the DS.
Naw, bro. The GBA can play black-and-gray Game Boy games. The GBA and SP contain the Game Boy Color processor for backwards compatibility, and since The GBC can accept old GB games, likewise can the GBA. Give it a shot if you still have the materials handy.
Also, as for the micro, I'd like to champion it's greatness for a minute. Sure, it can only accept GBA games and it was probably a bit overpriced when it hit the market, but it really is stylish. The screen is so sharp and so bright that it's easier to view the screen despite it's smaller size compared to the original GBA. Also, it features the best cross pad on a handheld ever. And it is truly portable. You just have to get it in your hand to really appreciate it.
Gargoyle's Quest was one of my favourite games of all time. It got me into the whole RPG genre. I am going to have to hunt this down.
you know what that was a mistake, I meant the first one. It looks like Gargoyle's Quest 2 came out for the nes, I never played that
Not only is this cheaper than a gameboy light, it doesn't have the annoying hiss that the gameboy light has when the light is on.
