I’m obviously a huge sports fan, and accordingly, I enjoy sports sims. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t also love games like NFL Blitz or NBA Jam, and I’m well aware that many Dtoiders don’t give a damn about a sports game unless it has special powerups and other outrageous, surreal features. If you’re nodding your head as you’re reading this, then EA has got something for you: a new IP called FaceBreaker.
We don’t have much information on the game, but from the first screenshots and press release way back at the end of January, we gathered that it will be an arcade boxing title in the vein of Punch-Out!! for the NES. In fact, if you check out the first trailer above, you may notice that a few of the 11 characters (that’s how many I counted, anyway) bear some resemblance to the pugilists in that 8-bit classic. Bald Bull and Don Flamenco, anyone?
I really like the way this game looks so far. I’m not a fan of boxing; I guess I’m not your typical alpha male, but watching two people beat the living daylights out of each other has no appeal to me whatsoever. However, if I can build up a “special” bar over the course of a fight and unleash a lethal Shoryuken-esque spinning uppercut by pressing R1 or something, then count me in.
FaceBreaker, developed by EA Canada and published by EA, will be out this year for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii; for more information, hit up the game’s official website at http://www.easports.com/facebreaker/.
[Thanks, Justin!]
I'm intrigued though. I enjoyed the Fight Night Round 3 multiplayer on my 360 so, hopefully this one can be a much more ridiculous exciting version of that.
Can't argue with that.
I've been waiting for a game that gave me the same feeling I got from playing Ready 2 rumble. The characters there seem overly stereotypical, but very colourful as well. I'll be keeping an eye out.
Marketing - 10
Style - 8
Gameplay - 2
Multiplayer - broken.
I would agree with that as a blanket statement, but with Peter Moore at the helm of EA Sports, I'm hoping he's able to really turn up the heat on the programmers and restore quality to the brand. Shit, they've bought up all the sports rights, might as well turn out a decent product.
Then again, we also have to do our part and vote with our money. If it or any of the other EA games are garbage, DON'T BUY THEM! Once they realize they can't "just shit in a box and mark it guaranteed" (what movie for 5 bonus d-toints?) they'll have to improve quality or gtfo of sports gaming for the good of gamer humanity.
Please no flaming for one of the new guys awarding d-toints. It was a joke.
KTHX
Interest rising.
It's only now that I'm on my laptop and can actually watch the video I realise that this game looks like shit. Why it didn't twig when I read all the boxing and power-up references that it wasn't a football game i'll never know. Not to self, don't use Dtoid Mobile, it hurts your brain!
But uh, suicide-girl emo-goth rocker chick?!! Why!!?
I personally think all game developers need boobies in their pseudo-realistic fighting games, even if they're small. DoA being an extreme example, obviously. But short pink skirt? Is there camera control, anyone?
You're not only not the typical alpha male, but you're also not a typical male. I keep reading that sentence and it just doesn't make sense to me.
I did like ready to rumble so this has that appeal, but I cant tell if its too over the top..
Lets see some of the damage!!!
